Well, I don't think I've cringed at people as much as I have during this thread.

An international superstar in one of the most popular stars dies and these moral paragons suddenly come out of the woodwork to say "Well, 28 people died in the last minute!" as if that suddenly changes this death or as if those 28 were even known to them.

It's almost as if we don't mourn what we don't know... imagine that.

I personally didn't watch basketball, but even to me, it's just a weird thing to think about. The man was still in the spotlight. Kinda weird to think that he'll never be in the eye of sports the way he has been so far... Some deaths just will have a strong effect not only on people, but on culture and I think this is one of them.

Whoever's hurting over this, I hope you'll feel better. The man lived a better and more celebrated life than most. Celebrate what he managed in his life, rather than thinking of what could've been.

Just a bunch of self-righteous keyboard warriors, nothing new here.

I was sad for all the people who died at that crash, especially the kids who would never get to achieve things like Bryant did. And I didn't really think of posting that, because what I feel isn't all that relevant for everybody. (Though I ended up posting it as a reply here.) But yeah, having some people die doesn't make the loss of others less significant. It's a shitty thing to say.

It usually rubs me the wrong way when it gets phrased as "[Celebrity died] in an accident, oh also a whole bunch of other people" because it's kinda dehumanising of their part on the tragedy. Though I can appreciate that as a celebrity some people can build a sense of empathy towards them because they have some vague familiarity / appreciation of the individual, whereas the unnamed or non-celebrities are total unknowns. I think the worst case was how in older missing children statistics or reports in various newsmedia, they would do the whole "blonde haired blue eyed little girl" as a deliberate sort of posterchild measure upon viewers heartstrings, which just felt like a bizarre gesture when other missing children were part of the story.

The internet is a place of recreation for most, so the more edgy or (hopefully) youthful tend to be flippant about subjects people care about. In reality they might just be scoffing as a kind of self-insulating measure so that they don't emotionally engage with the subject and essentially ruin their downtime by feeling bad, y'know? It's abrasive, but the quasi-anonymity causes people to often act as a much lesser version of themselves (the following 'arguing for the sake of arguing' individual being another stand out example back there).

I'll admit, I tend to roll my eyes at celebrity announcements of all kinds (even deaths), but I think that's kind of the key. If people are sore over something, it's pointless to salt the wound, no matter how small it may seem from the outside. Nobody is immune to feelings, and emotions tend to be irrational even at the best of times. Even if it really was "stupid" or "pointless" to feel bad at a distant celebrities passing, that's all irrelevent, because if you feel a thing, then that emotion is real regardless of it's source or trigger. We're allowed to feel a little sting. Just as we're allowed to cry at movies, choke up at random clickbait videos of cute animals, or see red about 'small' matters like these in gaming forums. Being totally emotionally numb is kind of a really bad thing, and even just being very emotionally resilient can make a person without foresight real clumsy in their engagement. I don't think that person is evil or maybe not even a genuine asshole, perhaps just edgy, young, and human enough to drop a post they'll cringe about if they remember it in a few years. ;P

Shit. I forgot where I was going with this. The captain obvious routine kinda runs away with me.

People like basketball. Kobe Bryant is a legendary basketball player, and so people look up to him on this basis. People are now sad because he has died. How is this a bad thing?? Are fans not allowed to be sad when someone they admire dies?

Yep, apparently you aren't allowed to mourn a celebrity in the XXI century because telepathic grieve police knows for sure that you are being a hypocrite.

Is it just me, or do famous people die a LOT more on small aircraft (helicopters, small planes) than on large ones?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatalities_from_aviation_accidents

Even Stevie Ray Vaughan (my current avatar) died in a helicopter crash.

I don't want to instill a fear of aircraft in anyone, but it seems the smaller ones are more accident-prone, so it's something to consider when travelling.

but it seems the smaller ones are more accident-prone

This has pretty much always been the case in aviation.

To your first point, celebrities make up such a significant part of the statistic because they are simply more likely to afford and utilize said travel. Correlation =/= Causation.

First learned about it here at SG. Totally shocked. My cousin used to play basketball before sustaining a spine injury in a car crash (thankfully he recovered and could even continue to play on amateur level, but couldn't dream of a pro career anymore). Kobe was his childhood idol and the player he's tried to model his play after.
So sad.

If LA wasn't such a liberal shithole with gridlocked traffic as a bonus he and the other moneybag passengers wouldn't have taken the CHOPPPER. His legacy though, will live on and his wealth soon claimed and or contested by a dozen or so kids he has fathered over the years with a rumored 100+ women. Barely related but mildly entertaining spelling: https://twitter.com/HoustonRockets/status/1220738026134962182

Goddamn i was shook when i saw the news... One of the greats died in such an odd helicopter accident especially if you consider even the LAPD grounded their helicopters due to rain and fog, it makes me wonder if they knew the risk and decided to go anyway since they were behind schedule. Apparenty they were going to his daughters bb game idk man, if anything this shows you that no one is untouchable and when the time comes you cant do nothing about it. I hope his family can recover from this tragedy and i hope everything will turn out just fine for his wife and their daughters... And here we are showing the respect this man deserves, but the haters have already ruined this post and the man isnt dead even 1 day... He was a superstar and ofc his death will be covered all around the world as it should be, because we are talking about a giant of the sport of basketball. Yeah people die everyday and no one talks about it on the news, but guess what talking about them on the news doesnt bring them back and to be fair some lives are more accomplished than others... And in case you guys havent noticed yet this world is fueled by money and the average person dying doesnt make the headline nor the revenue in most cases, but a guy like Kobe makes millions of dollars for others even in death and this is the reason why his death is all over the news worldwide... He died with his daughter and there was not much said about her in the news and she is a Bryant, so put that in perspective... And remember dont hate the player hate the game... So, the king of LA is dead and a new chapter begins for all his fans and fans of basketball, and most importantly his family... They lost their husband/dad and daughter/sister and they dont deserve this hate and its not their fault he was a superstar and believe you me, they dont need or want all this media attention... Rest in peace Kobe, GiGi and all the other victims and i hope all the families involved in this tragedy can survive this god awful day and find peace.

I read the news yesterday and couldn't believe it. Kobe was amazing, an all time great player that only comes around once in a lifetime.
He inspired me and everyone around him, rip mamba.

and I think everyone knows he wasn't a sit idly by type of dude

Please don't confuse the United States with the world. I was barely aware this person existed and his death has about as much impact on me as if some famous Counterstrike GO player had died.

But if he managed to inspire other people to change their life for the better that's good for them.
