Hi natblidas, I would like to join your whitelist as well :)))
My absolute favorite LGBT character is Liara T'Soni in the Mass Effect Series. She always turns out to be my pick :)

That's fair, Dragon Age has enough romance for everyone:p (added)

I haven't really paid attention for that. but after reading comments I Remember Mass effect
there are a few ways to get a gay or lesbian (if you play as a girl) romance going
also there is an entire Race which is bi (as they can partner with any other race, no matter the sex)

makes sense, she's a pretty cool character! (added)

For me it is probably the Mass Effect Trilogy, because you had a bunch of options available. It was not done like : Here is your token gay character with whom you can have a romance, you have to choose him/her if you want to play with a LGBT background. You also had LGBT NPC's, like the mechanic guy who lost his husband in the war.
Mass Effect Andromeda and Dragon Age also come to mind.
And if you are into visual novels I can think of Ladykiller in a Bind (with BDSM content). The main character is a young woman who's twin brother tricked her into impersonating him on a cruise with her brothers classmates. You are supposed to win a popularity contest for him. And if you play your cards right you can walk away with your "princess" in the end.

I totally agree, I think Bioware does a good job with that, and also not making it super tragic or sole focus of a character.
I don't think I've heard that one so thank you for the recommendation, I'll have to check it out! :)

I would pick Gone Home, also because Undertale has been suggested many times! ;)

Hm... Dragon Age, along with Dorian, and Leliana, I appreciate Krem being written relatively respectfully.
Life is Strange... Rachel!
Monster Prom
Dream Daddy
The Lion's Song has an enby character I hear, but I haven't finished it. =/
The Town of Light... heavy story with strong themes.
Agent of Mayhem is far from perfect, but it's fun and has a few queer characters.
Edith Finch, one of the brothers is bi (the player can choose his path in his backstory)
I can't really pick any one single game tbh. And this isn't even a complete list of games I've enjoyed with queer characters in them. <3

Only wish they cast a male voice actor for Krem but otherwise I agree with everything you said! (added)

I definitely recommend checking out some of the listed games, a few of them are my top favorite in general (especially Dragon Age if you're into fantasy stuff). But I'm counting that cop-out answer so, added :)

Well if it helps, the new Odyssey will supposedly have 2 bi characters if you're into playing that :p (added)

Definitely Mass Effect 1. The game has Liara (and an entire species of aliens that can bond with any living creature and produce offspring with them regardless of gender / non-gender). I've always imagined it's similar to what happens with crops like corn when humans modify a corn seed with non-corn DNA, to produce new type of corn that's resistant to diseases and bugs -- except Liara's people did it to acquire new mindsets (and I guess physical strength too?).

I've heard a lot of comparisons when it came to human(like?) reproduction but never with corn haha added!

HI, I had a post earlier on mentioning the blue alien from Mass Effect, other than that I haven't paid much attention. Loved the daughter witch in Dragon Age as well, dug the sass. v Most games I've played, with the exceptions of ME, Witcher and DA, sexual orientation just doesn't really come up. I have Life is Strange but haven't made it very far in. Hoping to get added to the WL.

Hi! Definitely adding you! I have no idea how I missed your comment, I must have been on mobile or something, thanks for bringing my attention to it thought, added now :)

Thank you very much. One thing I've noticed now that you've gotten me thinking about it, there seems to be a lot more female characters than male characters that fall under that umbrella, at least in the big budget games. I wonder if that's because the female characters are often supporting cast and not the main player, or if it's still a little sexism at play, where most devs are men and find something less threatening about coding a lesbian but are still uncomfortable with gay men. As I said, I don't really play a lot of games that address this, so a little limited here. What do you think? Am I wrong here, or does the industry seem more comfortable with women? *Edit: I'm always nervous say anything like this, especially to strangers online. On the one hand I'm genuinely curious, on the other I don't want come across as bigoted in case I'm just not aware of the right thing to say or use the wrong words, and on the 3rd? hand oftentimes the most innocent and honest questions are somehow taken as if they are filled with ill intent and malice by some people. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good ol' internet flame war as much as anyone, but not about legitimate sociological issues.

Personally, I agree with all of you points too but I think they do it because straight men (who tend to be the most vocal video game consumers even if they might not be the actual majority) tend to be more "acceptable" of lesbians/bi women since they can somehow ignore it and usually even deny it (I've seen some forums and they're both hilarious and sad). And most of those characters are also from "choice" games where they're romantic interests where the player doesn't have to choose them/can play as a male and never even realize they're not straight.
The often mentioned Dragon Age and Mass Effect all let you play as a male so most ignore it (that said it also lets you romance men but again straight men tend to ignore that if they can too, but technically those games are 50/50). Life is Strange lets you romance a boy too and completely ignore the romantic (towards a woman) aspects in the game. The only "truly" lesbian protagonist in a game, where it can't be ignored or a choice and is actually shown in the game, is Ellie from The Last of Us and even that had tons of people dismissed her previous relationship as just "friendship" and such.
So honestly, I think it's developers being cowards and knowing men still might "enjoy" seeing lesbians and bi women on screen as opposed to gay/bi men, and won't face as big of a backslash from the fanbase they're trying to gather. But my views and statistics also might be biased since if I search for LGBT rep in games I'll focus on lesbian representation as I am one myself :p

I agree with this 100%. For some (most? I hope not) straight men, gay/bi women are either easily sexualized or easily ignored. Whereas gay/bi men are scary.
There's a line in Robert B. Parker's Spenser novel Looking For Rachel Wallace that I like a lot, something like:
Rachel: "Do you find lesbians to be repulsive or titillating?"
Spenser: "Is there a third choice?"
Rachel: "I certainly hope so."
Hopefully we can get to a point where the sexual orientation of gay/bi characters (and of gay/bi people in real life, of course!) is hardly even noticed, because it's just not that big of a deal anymore.

I'm older, a genX'er, and a straight man, things are a lot better now than then,at least in the US. We aren't there yet but we are definitely on the right path. I admit I shared that backwards way of thinking as a kid in the mid/late 90's. Back then the opinion was they were "eroding the morality of America", it's ironic that most of us couldn't see then that it was our own vitriol that was causing the real harm. I'm so glad that I've grown out of that and see love and acceptance now rather than all the fear and hate we had then. Off subject and nothing to do with video games, but if you know who Travis Wall is (if not google him, he's a fantastic artist) I'm desperate for him to choreograph a contemporary dance routine revolving around love with two male dancers, it would not only be epic, but it would send a positive message of acceptance on national TV! Anyway, sorry for going so far off topic of my favorite LGBT video game character, I'm just so often dumbstruck at how far we've come in 20 years and sometimes questions like this get me thinking.

Yeah, I'm 42 and straight and also live in the US, and it seems like things have improved since I was a kid. For one thing, people talk about this kind of stuff now! Which is awesome. Communication is a wonderful thing.
I guess not actually being part of the LGBT community, we may not be able to say definitively that things have improved or are on the right track... but hopefully our impressions are correct.

Life is Strange has already been said so I'll go with Gone Home. I went in playing not knowing what the game would be about at all so the whole time I was terrified waiting for something to kill me. Turns out it was just a really nice narrative heavy indie game with no jump scares!

Is it okay if I bump this myself since I updated it? I hope so :D

Great question! I actually have quite a few to pick from, but I'll go with one not mentioned yet.
Analogue: A Hate Story is a fantastic visual novel that lets you play as either a man or a woman (or, in the sequel, someone with other pronouns) and romance the female AI on a derelict, abandoned spaceship. Some of the records you uncover while on your mission to discover what happened to the ship also discuss the romance between two women who used to live there.

I only have a handful people on my whitelist and I'm about to make some giveaways so I figured why not do some WL ones!
I'll probably do this a few times with different requirements each (even though I'll keep it fairly simple).
I'm curious about how many are out there. To start off mine's Dragon Age (Dorian and Leliana are just cool regardless). Guess there's plenty of them there so you could probably rip off that answer if you don't know any others :p
Edit: one GA is up and running now and you can join here.
It's a small one and I published it by accident as I was planning on scheduling a bunch for next weekend but I'm too big of a clutz I guess. I'll just put the others up when it's time and avoid more accidental postings lol
Edit 2: Second giveaway is up and running so join here.
