I've been using Google music trial lately and I found it very convenient - no need to buy albums, just keep streaming and have an option to add to library. Would you be interested in something similar for steam games (maybe somewhat like gamefly where you can rent games and buy them with a discount if you want to keep it)?
Thoughts?

Would you like to see (optional) steam subscription based service?

No. Why pay ~$10 per month when games regularly cost less?

Unlimited (preferably) game downloads, with all the expansions triple A titles can end up being $100+.
But then again, a person who's not an avid gamer might not get their moneys worth of gameplay.

There was one videogame rentalservice where you could rent games per day without any subscription. Can't remember what it was since I couldn't use it in Germany. It was a game streaming service tho.
Anyways... I miss the days where I would rent a playstation game for the weekend and play the shit out of it. So I would want something like that, yes!

Sounds familiar, yeah. Really? That's too bad, honestly, I was so hyped that you could stream games on smartphones. Damned...

It would entirely depend on the options. 10 a month for unlimited play of any/most games? Bargain for most gamers. Considering plenty of people will buy a new release at full or 10% off preorder, it would save them hundreds. It would also be a great tool to test out a game to see if A.) It runs on your system properly, and B.) That you actually enjoy it. After your month/period is over, you can then buy it when its on sale!

The actual logistics of a steam subscription service would be very confusing and open to abuses, but as a thought exercise its interesting.

So it's like a free weekend but not free and not just weekend...
But how?

Free weekend is only free for some games on the weekends. I was thinking along the lines of renting GTAV, Witcher 3, Evolve, Black Ops 3, etc. I doubt anyone would use this for indie games since those are cheaper

No devs would agree on it, because noone would be buying new releases anymore. Only thing that you may got from it could be small indie games.

I guess, I'd love to start playing new games, and buy them later when the price drops. Might even prevent people from pirating certain games

everyone would do that. Or just don't buy them at all. Look at this: new release costs 60$. Let's say you're dedicating 25h weekly for gaming. It means 100h in a month. A lot of AAA games you're able to finish in 10-20h. Some even in 5h. So let's say on avg you need 15h per game. So let's say in this month you can finish 6.66games, let's say you decided on 2 shorter 5h titles, so 7 games. You propose to include all latest hits - so you played through games worth 420$ and you propose that they charge 10$ for it? 30% is Steam Cut, so it leaves 7$, 1$ for each game. 1$ for games like GTA5, Witcher 3 and so on. Like I said no dev or publisher other than small indie devs would go for it.

And it's all based on assumption that you play 25h per week. There are ppl who are pulling 40-50h f gaming per week.

That would be a very valid concern... except companies like Block Buster, Hollywood video, Gamestop, and others have/were around for ages and we are still getting games. Same follows for video stream, youtube, netflix and so on. Cable is still running right along.

"But thats different, its not the same comparing a physical console copy to a digital download!" you might say.
The same percent of people who would bypass steam's/any drm, are the same percent who already do it via torrents and warez.

Of course, we both know they wont agree to it since the stock holders and the higher ups will think no one would buy new releases anymore, but thats not reality.

You don't know if the game runs the same on your machine.. Some games are fun to watch, less fun to play (for me, i.e. DST, etc.)

Quality would be my guess, and selection, as well as ease of use. Its quite handy to just go around to different stations/playlists and get a different selection of songs from artists you might have never heard before.

i wouldn't have enough time to play everything with a subscription. i can probably spend less per month (even nothing) and play what i want when i want without pressure.

Nah, with all the sales and bundles happening it makes no sense to have a subscription or rental system.
You can get a very crowded backlog by spending $10 per month. I normally spend somewhere between $10 and $15 every month and my backlog is bigger that what I can tackle.

Spotify integration code was found in the original steam music stuff. It's definitely possible they will go that route.

I already like the -75-90% sales for free, thanks.

I might consider a "all you can play" fee. Maybe. But honestly I fear it would only encourage bad habits from developers. And they don't need more of those.

Alright I guess it could go either way, just figured that id love to be able to "rent" steam games (especially during my time off, was thinking along the lines of paid full trial version of any steam game). Thanks for all the input everyone!
