When you make a character in a multiplayer game, and you get a choice of genders, what do YOU primarily choose to play as?
Do you always make a male? If you are a male player, are you comfortable enough to always make a female? Do you mix at times?

Lets all confess our sins..... I meant pleasures... I meant.... You know what I mean....

Edited due to accidental sexism. MASSIVE apologies to all that I may have offended with that bad wording.

Or, he could just be assuming that female players predominantly create male characters to objectify. ;)

Edit: This was intended as a joke and for some reason, I had a distinct impression that you made this comment slightly tongue in cheek. Sorry if I misjudged the situation and made it worse. You make the impressing as someone who can speak for themselves and for what it's worth, I appreciate your contributions to the discussions

So you're telling me that asking a question like it's only addressing males is sexist?

Edit: Maybe I rather should have asked if only addressing males with a question is sexist. I mean he could be particularly interested in the male perspective.

Ok, I agree. So "Hey males" then. However awkward that may sound.

Edit: So let me see if I understand you right then. We can not imply who we're addressing by the context of our question without being sexist?

in order to avoid having that presumption be present (since, if it is left uncanceled, it's insulting to the part of the audience that we imply, whether intentionally or unintentionally, wasn't important enough to address).

I sometimes think I'm using over-complicated language when I'm trying to express myself clearly but damn, I have nothing on you ;)

You're not explicitly answering my question though, at least not as far as I can see. Is it sexist to, as you say, not explicitly cancel the presumption of addressing everyone but instead inferring the cancellation by the context of our question?

Edit: I was just reading through my recent replies and happened to notice the title for this topic which reads, Multiplayer questions for you all This actually makes a much better argument than your "default context of a forum post" for me. With the title in mind, I have a much easier time to understand how someone might feel hurt by being excluded. My previous question still stands though :P

Ambiguous and clearly subjective yeah. Reading this makes me feel like they are rather useless terms as everything and everyone can be considered sexist and or racist depending on circumstances beyond their own control.

If you support (structurally) sexist/racist policies, i.e., policies the overall effects of which harm one group more than other, in virtue of sex or race—like asking for previous salaries during job interviews—then you are a (structural) sexist/racist

No one is ever going to have absolute control over all of the consequences of decisions they make in their life. I'm still interested in your position on my role reversal scenario though

I mix the two. I base it on looks lol... If the girls look too feminine then I go for male. It breaks the immersion cause I don't feel like I'm defensive enough with a bra chestplate...

I do like playing as female but I see myself playing as males more.

First and foremost, male, since im male, i feel like playing myself, even though i realy dont try to model myself that/too much to the best of my abilities and the games tools, being male is just somewhat enough. Give me black hair, thin or thick big beard and im good to go. BUT i do always love to make a female version of myself aswell, i did so in Crimecraf, primarly played as male, but tried to make a pretty female character aswell and proggress there a bit too, was neglected a little less than half amount of level proggresion. If i had GTA V, id do the same since i noticed theres two slots, one male, one female. But uh, if a game requires too much time investement, then i got NO time to make and play as a female character, like say, WoW, never did that there, too much proggresion, not worth at all, not at all, i feel like playing like myself, its just natural, common sense, comfortable most that way, my insticts, my gut feeling tells me to or...something....thats the best i can do at explaining that. Id choose male but the both option also applies so il stick with that i guess.....? But if i were to play as female characters, id love to make them as pretty as possible, opened clothing from toe to torso, makeup such as lipstick and nail polish on all 20 nails and clearly visible, etc.

Must also feel awkward when someone you know is at least a 13 year old kid as the brawniest male you can make runs up and tries to hit on you or do the most perverted act the game will allow to your character. Like when I used to see a LOT of this in the original Guild Wars. People would run up behind female characters and start the thrust part and repeat it over and over.

I can't say I have ever encountered that which is likely related to the fact that I mostly play shooters and my characters are not half naked chicks with big boobs: exhibit 1, 2 and my longest used 3.
And if I would I would probably just shrug it of as a dumb 13 year old kid and go on doing my own stuff, but it is true that it is really hard to make me uncomfortable and it is probably different with other people.

For me it totally depends on the game! I'm a male and usually go for a male character, but my alts usually tend to be 50/50.. My main will always be a male but my alts may be females it mostly depends on the " backstory" that i create for the character or because some classes i prefer to play as a female and others are nicer as a male. Or just for fun: sometimes it's nice to see a badass tank lady on the field or a cheerish cleric lady! (same goes for races! Who doesn't love a tiny gnome for a tank character or a mountain big dude as a cleric ans so on)
But being honest it mostly depends on whatever is going through my mind during character creation.

Even in solo games. My fav char in demon souls is female because female fluted armor is sweet, and females get soul boosting bracelet :P

Only pick female if the game has a 'class' system.

Female --> mages (sometimes archers or rogues)
Male --> all other classes

Roughly 52% of gamers are women but thanks in part probably to the rather inappropriate behavior of certain boys and men in social games a lot of these women choose to not divulge this fact if possible, and a lot of them don't feel comfortable in certain games.

The mindset behind this question is part of that problem. 20 years ago most of the people online were male, because the industries that first started getting access to the internet were traditionally male. This and the fact that women don't advertise being women in most circumstances has led to this illusion and misconception that "there are no girls on the internet". This is just plain wrong, and everyone who thinks this is even remotely true needs to take a step back and take in the new facts about the situation.

51% of the world's population is on the internet, and that divide is not between genders - it's between rich and poor, and to some degree between young and old. In most first world countries nearly everyone has access to the internet, and in studies around half of the girls in the US plays games, even if only a smaller percentage label themselves as gamers.

As for which gender I play I don't have a steady choice - I don't play a lot of multiplayer games but whenever I make characters I like to give them a little core of backstory or an idea that I build them around, it's more fun to play that way. I'll play whichever gender makes that idea more fun to play.

Ah, ok. With these low barriers, even my mum would be included in the statistics and since there are more women in the world it makes perfect sense.

However the stereotype that female gamers are interested almost exclusively in casual smartphone titles is tested by the data. 47% of female gamers polled had played a disc-based game in the last six months, and 68% had played an online game. 56% of female gamers have played on a console.

These are very vague terms but... nevermind, let's just say that having played a disc-based game at some point during the last six months somehow disputes a preference for smartphone based gaming.

“We were really surprised by how captivated consumers are by the gaming environment; once they are playing, they are completely ‘in the zone,’” said Chester. “We hear a lot about how everyone is always multi-tasking but the study shows that games are a unique and engaging environment which requires people’s complete and utter focus.”

Yeah damn, it's surprising that after spending millions researching just how to "captivate" they are able to do just that. Requiring complete and utter focus most definitely depends on what you're playing and how successful you are expecting yourself to be though.

I agree those terms are vague, I disagree it matters - smartphone based games are just as much games and gaming as PC or Console games. Some of my favorite games lately have great or even identical smartphone versions - like for instance "This War of Mine" which I played a lot on my tablet.

And yeah, it's not surprising how captivating gaming can be. I mean not only because some companies do everything they can to captivate you to get the contents of your wallet, but because games are generally immersive and takes your mind off other things and gives you the freedom to engage with a fictional setting in a manner of your choosing. Few things are as captivating as feeding the need everyone has to "play" and "imagine". Anyone being surprised at this is frankly surprising to me. :D

I agree those terms are vague, I disagree it matters

Well, if we are trying to draw any kind of reliable conclusions from research or polls the terminology used has to be as clear, concise and accurate as possible. I, obviously, agree with you regarding mobile games but the very vast majority of those are not relevant at all in this context since we're talking about character creation preferences.

I mean not only because some companies do everything they can to captivate you to get the contents of your wallet, but because games are generally immersive and takes your mind off other things and gives you the freedom to engage with a fictional setting in a manner of your choosing.

Yeah, I may be overselling the skill a bit but all the, relatively, new stuff in majorly f2p games for now but slowly trickling down to every genre are nothing short of devious. Daily rewards, micro transactions, exclusive items in a social context, in-game currencies, collectibles, achievements and a shitload of things I've forgotten to mention are all meticulously designed to prey on the weakness of the primitive parts of our brains.

Yeah if you're interested in diving deeper into the devious minds of game designers you should look up some coursework on gamification. They tend to be very clear they talk about the ethical use of the concepts which by its very nature means they also teach you about the unethical ways - just read between the lines and look up the research they mention. Quite interesting reading!

If I'm in full control it's normally male, if I have a chance to pick a different race, then it just depends on what I can pick.
But in most cases, my main will always be a male, alts, however are in the 50/50 area.

If the gender doesn't change anything important other than the look of the character, I usually just dont really care all that much and just go with the default gender. I guess that might just be in relation to the type of person I am irl. I'm a female but if someone refers to me as a male, I never make an effort to correct them unless it'd be necessary information to them somehow. I also must add that no matter which character I choose, there is really no reason I'd feel uncomfortable as it. If people refer to me as a guy, cool... If people in the game try to hit on my character, cool. It's not the end of the world and I doubt either of those things would really affect how I play the game which is what I'm there for.

If it's with romances (story wise or RP), definitely male. But I created female alternate characters with "normal" builds from time to time, just for variety. Tried to RP with them, but while it was working for special events, I never felt comfortable for ongoing story arcs (as in not playing the role well).
