No, First of all, Proton/Wine is allowed, even encouraged for stuff that doesn't work with Linux natively. Secondly, as long as your Steam client runs on Linux natively (not through Wine), it's entirely allowed, as I can't verify that you didn't e.g. dual-boot into Windows just to play Origin/Uplay titles outside of Steam, so it'd also be silly from me to require from people what I can't verify.
In short, If you run Steam on Linux exclusively, and not through wine, there is no real possibility for you to get classified as non-Linux user. The only way for you to trip the bot's flag would be either, running Steam through wine (client, not the game, which would make Steam classify you as Windows itself), or actually running Steam on Windows/OS X (and playing a game there, just launching the client won't trip the flag).
You should be perfectly fine launching software through Proton/Wine, whether inside Steam or outside of it :3.
Comment has been collapsed.
So, if I run it on Windows the bot will flag it. It's one of two piece of software that I need Windows for. I asked it because I don't know the bot's algorithm and openCanvas is not a game but it seems from bot's perspective it doesn't matter as long as it runs on Steam.
In that case, I better not forget to switch offline mode before run openCanvas. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh right, openCanvas is a Steam app, you're right, bot might (will) flag it if you run it on Windows.
There are two solutions I can recommend you:
If somebody really cares about the movement, he'll be fine with first or the second option, and I don't plan to hunt or discourage people from the second. I don't actively encourage or approve of it, but I consider it a necessary evil for those that want to participate in the group regardless - consider it intentional obstacle for not going full-Linux :3.
Comment has been collapsed.
Second option seems a more guaranteed way, though that comes with a question. It looks like family sharing is traceable, sometimes I let my siblings play games via family sharing and they use Windows. I guess that falls under fooling the bot part?
Anyway, when I stop using GameMaker Studio and finally switch to Godot (and be better at Krita) I won't even bother to install Steam on Windows partition which will become nothing more than a testing machine. Just cannot do that on mid-project. Wish me luck. :3
Comment has been collapsed.
Family sharing shouldn't be a problem - you should not gain Windows playtime just because some other account you family-share with uses your library for Windows gaming. I didn't verify that, but I'm quite positive it shouldn't be a problem.
FIngers crossed for the project :3.

I'm hoping so. :)
To be honest, I started this with RPG Maker but it was limited to make an A-RPG so I searched about other engines that mostly made 2D in mind. I won Clickteam Fusion here and tried it a bit. Could've gone with it only if I haven't met with GameMaker Studio shortly after. And decided to warm up before making an A-RPG and started making a 2D platformer. :)
I learned about Godot much later, even as a daily Linux user, that's my bad. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
By the way, a feedback here:
It appears to be Valve doesn't support sharing software via family sharing, only viable way for me to switching offline mode. Some programs don't even work in offline mode it seems but at least openCanvas works but others might not be lucky as I am.
Maybe a whitelist kinda thing for the bot could be a nice addition in case of absentness.

Yep, I'm in the middle of implementation: https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/1wLyNwL

if not possible what is easy linux for only games steam?
2) i need use headphones creative xifi gamer (they need software sxfi control for enable xifi processor audio) is then linux or steamos can use it?
3) how i check if all games i own on steam it's compatible\playable with linux?
Comment has been collapsed.
SteamOS is only one of like hundreds possible distributions you can use for Linux gaming, and not in general any "better" or "more compatible" with Steam itself.
If you want to start with Linux, I recommend a more general distribution for PC usage. Kubuntu or Linux Mint are two good ones I consider for starters.

Thank you i will try,but if i use steamos is detect as linux or as windows?
Comment has been collapsed.
SteamOS is Linux of course. Only if you run Steam client on Windows or through Wine (Steam client, not the game), that will be classified as Windows.
In short, if you use Steam client on any Linux distribution and you're playing games natively or through wine/proton, all of that classifies as Linux.

I wouldn't use SteamOS right now. Version 2.0 (based on Debian) is now quite old, has a complicated installation, and version 3.0 (based on Arch) is to be released with the SteamDeck. I'm using Pop!_OS 21.04 currently, which is based on Ubuntu, and very user friendly.
Headphones will work, but software will not, though you might be able to get it to run in Wine/Proton.
This site works, but is quite slow.

Is Proton/Wine allowed?
Yes, and we heavily encourage you to use it for games that offer poor quality of Linux builds, or lack them entirely. Just ensure that you're not starting Steam under Wine, as that will likely make our bot classify your activity as Windows-based. As long as your Steam client is running on Linux without any emulation, it's fine!

don't but i will say that if for one moment you show people less of your data because your on linux then think again - you can easily get your data stolen on linux as i can on windows - not saying linux is bad of course each to their own just wanted to know why people think they are invisible and built prof by not using Windows (i would be interested in a list of games that work perfectly with linux, interested to see what it can run now)

Doesn't sound like a bait anymore so I can answer you the best I can.
(i would be interested in a list of games that work perfectly with linux, interested to see what it can run now)
https://www.protondb.com/explore?page=0&selectedFilters=includeNative&sort=userScore
Feel free to browse, the list is community-based, and I didn't find any false information yet. In fact, I made some titles work that are classified as broken. I've browsed top 250 games according to user scores, all of them work on Linux, check yourself.
you can easily get your data stolen on linux as i can on windows
Not easily, Linux is in general far more secure than Windows, majority of the servers you're visiting are based on Linux, and if it was easy to just hack into them, you'd see whole internet getting wiped on usual basis. Windows on the other hand has issues all the time, is vastly insecure, and has a lot of questionable mechanics that are not making things better. Yes, if you wanted to prove if you can get hacked with Linux, you can, but saying it's an equal chance to Windows is just foolish.
just wanted to know why people think they are invisible and built prof by not using Windows
On the contrary, people using Linux are usually those that care about privacy/security, and they know perfectly well that Linux is just an operating system, not a panacea for their privacy concerns or security issues. It's true that Linux is more secure and puts privacy higher than Windows, but it's not like you can't cause a privacy issue with it. You can't put an equal sign in privacy between operating system that is fully open-source and verified to not contain any kind of privacy leaks, and between operating system that forcefully against your will collects and sends data to third-parties, without you being able to disable it, and with manual workarounds usually breaking half of the OS.
Nobody here has a superiority syndrome, well maybe only a little :3. Quite the opposite, I've tried Linux myself, and felt in love with it, realizing how stupid I was not giving it a try sooner. Now, after learning on my mistakes, I'm happy to share them with others, so they can also give it a try and realize whether they like it or not.

if you think that because your using Linux your better than us pc users - i feel bad for you

Hey, very interesting topic :) But I would like to clarify about this:
play on Linux exclusively
So you mean now any game can be launched and played on Linux (preferable via Steam and Proton and without shamanic rituals) ?
I'm concerned (care/interesting... idk how to say it the proper way, my English isn't so good) about it cause Linux is the only one option for me when Chrome/Firefox will stop making updates compatible with Win7 (I can't use Win10, it makes me mad).
If I can play on Linux any game I'd be happy to remove damn Windows and forget about it xD
Also, important question - what about system requirements? Does playing games on Linux via Proton takes more system resources or not? (i thought Linux uses virtualization for directx, and it should require much better hardware for the same game)
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll try to answer this the best I can so it can also serve as a starting point for other people. This also involves me dropping my bias and trying to be objective, even if it'll still be a subjective opinion of somebody who uses Linux exclusively.
Gaming on Linux (through Steam) in my opinion became viable some time ago, and gets only better with time. We went from being able to launch and play like 10-20% games, to NOT being able to play 10-20% games, almost exclusively multiplayer-related (anti-cheating software).
So what did happen that basically turned the situation 180 degrees? Proton. Valve has been putting serious amount of money into Proton, a DirectX to Vulkan "translation" layer, which allows you to play Windows-only games on Linux, natively, with no emulation included (translation is not emulation, it's much cheaper, can be sometimes without any overhead).
At the same time I'd lie if I told you that you can play every title on Linux. No, you can't, even if Valve is doing whatever they can to solve the very few last missing bits to fix those multiplayer (anti-cheating) games. At the same time, it's important to note that while there are games that do not work on Linux at all, there are also that do work (vast majority of them), and even those that work better on Linux than on Windows despite NO Linux build. Example in that category includes Hitman 2 or Witcher 2 that I've verified myself. It's quite complex to explain why exactly, but in TL;DR Linux is more lightweight, can achieve a lot of things faster/better than on Windows, and sometimes DirectX translation to Vulkan can be so effective this way, that it's actually cheaper (and therefore games work faster) to do, entirely nullifying the cost of the translation itself.
Here you can find information about Proton/Linux compatibility of games, sorted by user score. Anything with gold and above is perfectly playable on Linux, usually with no performance degradation. Anything with Platinum or Native almost entirely guarantees that, and sometimes works better on Linux than on Windows.
Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you very much for the explanation :)
I checked out protondb (awesome feature to check games in my library after login, very useful) and was surprised around 95% of my games can be played on Linux =) Except for almost all MMOs =\ And some shovelware (which can be ignored) xD And 3 good games (that was weird...). I'm not a fan of multiplayer games, especially PvP games. But I like PvE MMOs and I play Genshin Impact (I've added it to Steam as a 3rd-party app and launch it from Steam client to inject Steam overlay + Steam screenshots features into the game).
Btw, is this feature (adding 3rd-party games) available in the Linux version of Steam? And can Steam on Linux run 3rd-party games via Proton?
Anyway, troubles with multiplayer games aren't so big problem :) And now I really start thinking about installing Linux in the closest days.
I would be grateful for the advice about the Ubuntu version - 20 or 21 is better to install for lamer?)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, it's possible to use Proton to play Windows-only games outside of your Steam library, however, depending on the installation procedure that can range from quite easy (standalone exes) to quite complicated (installers). Fortunately for you, there are a lot of wrappers over wine, just like proton, that can with a bit of tweaking launch games also outside of Steam, assuming they do work on wine. Proton is basically just a wrapper over it.
I can't say whether your games outside of Steam will work, mainly because it's game-specific and as you saw, some games have excellent results, other not so much. It's also no longer as easy as it is with Steam, where you just click "play" and it works OOB, as you'll likely need to at least install the game through some wine wrapper or wine itself. There is stuff like Lutris that can help you with that.
For a starter, I recommend latest version of Kubuntu, Linux Mint, or Debian stable with KDE. Ubuntu and Debian by default have Gnome interface, which is mostly alright for Linux users, but not very easy to switch from when somebody was using Windows for his whole life. KDE on the other hand, is top 2 DE in terms of popularity (so also very well done), while it's intuitive for Windows users as it has everything in almost the same place, including taskbar, start menu and so on.
Feel free to join our chat (linked in the thread) if you'd want to talk, solve issues or have any other questions about Linux. Contrary to an opinion some people have, we're actually very friendly people that care, and we're always happy to help other users that want to give Linux a try.

Isn't KDE more resource-heavy than Gnome? I tried to install Linux many years ago (just wanted to look what is it and ruined it in a few days under root xDD) and as I remember KDE was much slower than Gnome :)
And still, Ubuntu or Kubuntu - the question is the same, 20 or 21)
I've read somewhere Linux versions with odd version numbers aren't stable. But on kubuntu.org it doesn't have any warnings about it (ofc I didn't read the whole site, just releases and news). And seems 21 have the latest kernel and software releases... So I still can't make choice)

I use gnome-flashback as my desktop. I've recently upgraded to 21.10 and haven't had any issues with it, and at the time I updated the nvidia stable drivers available in 20 were not at the latest version
Comment has been collapsed.
if you truly care about resources that much, i suggest using xfce then. i personally use it and it's not heavy at all. i've been using it for as long as i remember - from my old old weak laptop way back to today when resources are not something i care too much about
Comment has been collapsed.
KDE is more lightweight than Gnome, that's a given. Both DEs however are great and it's up to you which one you prefer. If you like Gnome, by all means go for it, it's not like it's top 1 most popular DE for no reason. However, if you're new to Linux, considering switching from Windows, and want something that will make you feel at home, KDE is the way to go.
There are of course other DEs that are more or less worthy of your attention, we have a few dozen if not hundreds of them, but Gnome/KDE are two most popular ones and you can't go wrong with either, regardless of your system configuration, hardware or anything like that.
As of the version, I always recommend latest stable, so 21. LTS is good for servers, desktops should aim for the more fresh yet still tested experience.

Thank you very much again :)
Seems I choose Kubuntu 21 than (I read a bit about it and comparisons of (K|L|X)Ubuntu while waiting for answers xD and seems Kubuntu fits me more than the other 3).
And last question ^_^ Where Steam will store game files? Inside /usr or /home or somewhere else? (another word - I'm going to make separate partitions for swap, /, /usr and /home, if I'm not wrong installer should allow me to do so; which partition should I make biggest to be able to download and install heavy games?)
(sorry for offtopic, really last question and I will go download distributive and backup my crap from windows drive and apps xD)
Comment has been collapsed.
If you have an urge to use separate partitions you can do it, but I have only two, rootfs /
and swap, because I could put swap as the first partition and therefore have slightly faster disk access to it rather than at the end of the disk. Not so relevant anymore with SSDs.
It's not like you need to stick with your decisions forever. The important part is to actually try, verify on your own that using Linux as a daily driver is possible, and then eventually decide whether it satisfies you or not. It's sadly not a panacea for everything, but as I usually say, I might have several new problems with my Linux, but I no longer have any of those I had with Windows :3.
Comment has been collapsed.
I am using Manjaro KDE and while I found XFCE more performant - I've stuck the longest with KDE now, as it just works.
Additionally I hope that it'll just get better with time - as the new SteamOS 3.0 will be based on Arch (like Manjaro as well) and using KDE.
While I think the advantage of more widespread solutions when searching online with Debian based systems is great,
but so is the Arch wiki. And Manjaro being a rolling release one doesn't have to worry about upgrades to newer Versions of the OS.
And take advantage of newer packages/software.
(That's assuming you don't brick you system :D)
Over all I think my recommendation would go to Manjaro.
One can (if wanted) do nearly everythink in the UI.
Pamac (Add/Remove Software) for example is a nice UI for installing Apps and Steam even comes preinstalled on Manjaro
But generally when using any Linux distro, one needs to be ready to research problems occasionally. But that's normal - after all one is learning to use a completely different OS, so one shouldn't expect it to be a perfect Windows clone.

Since it seems there are some Linux gaming experts here I'll ask away. How to repair Proton here? The Proton games stopped launching for me at all, either the ones on Linux partition or on NTFS. It tries to load and fails. I tried some guides, winetricks, Glorious Eggroll and such, and nothing works. Also having problem with my HP printer under my Ubuntu.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've tried different kernel, with no avail. What do you mean by headers? If you mean Nvidia drivers, yes I have tried different versions. The problem is here for already few months. At first I only had problems with games on NTFS partition. Tried some fixes I found through googling, at the end I found myself running Linux support games also from my NTFS partition, but Proton doesn't work now either if I try to run it for a game on ntfs partition or one that is on home linux one :/
Comment has been collapsed.
Did you remember exactly when it started? These kind of things are easier to solve when they're warm. Headers define the kernel functions used by programs, installing a header could be helpful I think. Try installing linux-headers
file that matching your kernel.
Also running games from NTFS partition is not a good idea, I don't think that's the root of the problem but still.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, when I bought this computer few years ago I've made it a dual-boot machine and actually that saved me more then a couple of times.
I'm usually using Linux, but not everything works under it, and there are some issues sometimes like the HP Laser printer I have talked above. The games nowadays take large amount of disk space and divided 1T disk is not able to keep up. Also some online games tends to brake the Proton until Steam fixes it again, and for that time being I ware forced to play it under Windows. All it worked well for a year or two, but now is broken down. It is hard to remember when it started as that was quite long ago (almost year ago). And no, systems are on different disk then the games are.
I've checked I have linux-headers-generic installed on my machine.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just came to this:
Proton, just like wine makes files and directories with forbidden/reserved names for DOS devices. Installing proton makes the file system corrupted, as it contains files it could not under windows. Windows can't fix this either, the only fix is not using forbidden DOS names and characters in wine file/directory names.
Maybe it's actually NTFS problem. If you don't want to divide the disk, you might want to stay on Windows for a while. 1 TB is actually big enough though I don't know which games you're playing that use big hard disk space.
Personally I've never had broken Proton problem but I don't use NTFS other than Windows partition either. If something doesn't work that usually happens after some weird driver update.
You may try to reinstall your system but if that's related to NTFS that will happen again for sure.
Comment has been collapsed.
So it doesn't work at all! You can always start Steam on terminal, try to start a game and look into the output. It might be helpful but sometimes it doesn't much.
Also if this problem somehow related to your config files, you can try to create a new user and try to launch your games with that it.

I guess there is no need for that because looking at the errors here they mostly lead me to NTFS being accountable. The PATH error is fixed in 2018 so that suggests a corrupted files at least in one place. Someone wrote a fix for NTFS workaround but I would still not recommend it, maybe that would work for you I'm not sure. NTFS doesn't support file permissions since it's not a Linux file system, that causes problems with Proton.
For native games on NTFS partition, NTFS also doesn't support symlinks which Steam uses them heavily. This will lead a hit or miss situation.
You can also try ntfs-3g
package but I suspect that's already installed on Ubuntu.
There is also one more problem here. It seems you moved game folders by using Steam settings. The game you try to launch couldn't find requested files because they're on different disk. You can try to "verify integrity" of the game. But if it's on NTFS partition, it'll be broken again.

I know there isn't a deb package but you can install it via tarball method. If you need further help with that I'd like to help. Though I still think you need a fresh install and use an ext4 partition for games instead of NTFS.
Note that you can access files in ext4 partition from Windows, you can view them and copy them but cannot use them as in Windows partition. I used to do this with this software but it hasn't been updated since 2012 it seems so you should look for alternatives if you want to do this.
Using NTFS as a storage between two operating system is okay but when it comes to running software it just becomes a mess and would become nothing more than a headache. So you must most likely choose a certain way. Something in between is not a good practice.

It seems Proton config got corrupted, managed to recover most functionality of it with re-installing all the versions. Not all games run (and with the Murphy law those which I use the most), but most of the games started to run in both places on ext4 and ntfs partition as well.
Comment has been collapsed.
So that program worked?
I wonder why some of them still not working. Is there any native game that doesn't work or all of them from Proton?
By the way, do you keep your Proton folders under ext4 or NTFS partition? If so, at least keep Proton folders under ext4 even though you still keep games under NTFS. They could be corrupted because of NTFS.

Didn't know about LTE part, so reinstalling the system (or installing something else) is not an option either.
You can move game or Proton folders to other Steam library (NTFS to ext4) by going to Steam settings. It has a new interface for a while and moving installations is easy (they may need to re-download some parts). Though you mentioned you haven't updated some of them for months, so you cannot fully move them without update. So this is not a choice as well.
As I understand, at the moment you cannot already run the games that need update via Steam (unless they're DRM-free, then you can run them directly via Wine).
Currently it seems you need a serious re-work on your system, but that cannot be done without a normal internet connection. LTE would be expensive. If your current situation going to be longer and I would advise going fully offline games (maybe some GOG games with Lutris too), though I don't know if it's planned or not, if it isn't planned there isn't much to do to be honest, sorry about that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes that would be a real pain, as speed drops to minimal after using monthly transfer, such operation could take days even.
Yes, I know. But it's not something I would like to do either. There are games that normally work under Proton, however there are some frequent updates, like weekly ones, and sometimes such update break compatibility, usually compatibility returns after next, or few more updates, but in this case I ware playing most of the games from Windows so long that I ware forced to download updates under Windows and I'm betting that is the reason why I cannot lunch them now, when Proton is fixed. Earlier I ware doing updates only from Linux on both partitions, and that's why probably everything was working back then. Now Windows probably overwritten some formats, permissions and whatever, and although Steam under Linux is not seeing any issues, some of games are not working. There is also an issue of drive space, I don't have much free space on ext4 contrary to ntfs where I have much more space, so even if not for braking the compatibility with Windows there is this issue as well.
No, I can update them normally, I'm only not updating the games which I'm keeping if I return to them, but the patches are in few GB size due LTE limitations (don't want to go above my monthly transfer).
That is doable, but like I said at the beginning, time required for that would be just way to much, and besides after Proton has been fixed it seems most of the games are working, those that don't still work under Windows. I'm not very happy with reloading the system when I want to play different game, but current situation is much better when the state from months back when only linux ports ware working, and all windows games ware only running under Windows, so one could say I'm happy bunny with current state. Maybe there will be time I'll do it, but as I see it I'll probably buy new laptop after those few years before I grow to such thing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, at least you've got some progress and can play some of them. Maybe the year of Linux desktop already would be here when you decide to buy a new laptop. :)
Actually that never happened to me as I remember, in fact Proton updates usually fix my problems. Though I have one game that I couldn't get to work after I re-installed my system, no matter what Proton version, which is still a mystery to me.
I guess Steam on Linux just checking the files and if they are there doesn't alert anything, unless you start it via terminal and search the possible problem for yourself. Sometimes it doesn't really helpful as expected though.
It seems your carrier doesn't cut the connection (or expect you to pay more) as I suspected but the low speed still not a wanted thing either, I'm guessing it would be like 128~256 kbps. So, yeah it's not worth the effort.
I'm not very happy with reloading the system when I want to play different game
That's the exact reason why I stopped playing games on Windows quite some time ago. Since I don't like it as an OS and there are already plenty of games that work on Linux, doesn't bother me at all. Though that definitely changed my buying habits. I'm not buying games if I won't be able to play them on Linux. Didn't buy Hell Let Loose because of this reason for example. And I also look for native support as my priority, which most of the indie developers respect this as I noticed, at least for the games I play.
I'm completely agree that development pace is really fast, even in a couple months things change vastly.
I hope you get more happier with the system of your choice.
Comment has been collapsed.
This sometimes happens for me too, basically the game tries to load but doesn't, exits instead.
Restart of Steam usually does the trick for me. I have an impression that bigger libraries can cause this.
Proton version doesn't seem to have any effect on this. I'd blame Steam for that.
Comment has been collapsed.
I would really be glad if that was the case, but unfortunately it isn't. Yes it could be something in Steam, but it could also be something in Proton/Wine as I ware installing different distributions, winetricks.... it could be also some error in one of the configuration files. I wouldn't put it on system as for example Unity games and other written for Linux exclusively work without problems, even on NTFS partition.
Comment has been collapsed.
Now that I read what you wrote above, I'm quite confident NTFS partition is problematic here. If you were using ext4, chances are you wouldn't have issues.
Proton is known to do a lot of compatibility tricks to work with Windows-style filesystem layouts, this includes putting stuff with very specific names in very specific locations. If you've migrated to ext4, chance is this issue would be resolved for good.

So, forcing group members to play only on Linux is perfectly fine, got it. You've used synonyms for "force" in the context of evil corporations, but that's apparently somehow different. And yeah, I totally agree with wigglenose's comment above, this post does sound heavily condescending.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I do think that's different. Such groups require some activities from you, but they don't try to dictate how your each and every gaming experience should look like. That's a a bit extreme.
Comment has been collapsed.
you are not forced to join though. joining is a choice. if you want to stay, don't use windows. simple. in other groups to stay you need to keep doing giveaways. simple. in pilars to stay you need to keep good ratio or be patron. simple. i don't see any difference here.
Comment has been collapsed.
And now you're being as condescending as the original post is. Simple.

Then I must have read the post wrong, and I apologize for that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Weird logic imho. You don't make Linux more popular by only supporting people who already abandoned Windows totally. And it's pretty easy to kick some troll who'd drop such comments.
Anyways, your group and your choice obviously. So far I "only" plan to stick to Linux on my Steam Deck. But I have no plans to abandon Windows generally in the foreseeable future.
Comment has been collapsed.
I see it as a motivational factor. Some people tend to give up easily when they see an obstacle. This might give them an another reason to stay longer and try more. If a person thinking about switching to Linux, this group might be the catalyzer for them.
Because Linux is much more easier for standard users comparing 10 years ago. Sometimes they only need patience and read more, just like the first time they learned about Windows.
Comment has been collapsed.
Exactly my thinking. I want to promote and encourage people, not bash those that decided to stay with Windows. You do not "lose" anything by not participating in the group, but you actively gain extras for your time and effort into being a change we all want to see.
Obviously people that decided to stay with Windows won't be happy about a group they can't participate in, but that's the whole point - there are enough of groups and other sources that promote Linux, this is another reason to the mix why one should consider it, rather than being another advocate for it.
Comment has been collapsed.
people that decided to stay with Windows won't be happy
I think we can say this also applies generally with Microsoft's doings day after day. Another good reason to learn about Linux before things gone worse in my opinion.
For the groups, there are bunch of exclusive groups on SG anyway and they all have their reasons, probably. At least encouraging for Linux, and indirectly for more privacy is a nice thing. Curious people here will learn they have choices over Windows and more importantly reasons to switch. I believe more people would like to have control over the system they use and actually have privacy while doing that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Serious response/ question:
Please let me know if I'm completely wrong, but to me this seems a bit counter intuitive. If the goal of the group is to promote/ encourage people to switch to Linux for (at least) gaming, then it seems wierd to me that the requirements to join the group are 'no games played on Steam on Windows in the past 2 weeks', and 'At least 1 game launched on Linux in the past 2 weeks'.
The reason I find this strange is that the hard part about switching to Linux isn't staying on Linux after you've got it 'up and running'. But rather it is the 'getting it up and running' part. So your group requirements require the person to have already 'gotten up and running' to join, which is the big bottleneck for many people IMO.
These group requirements make perfect sense for the sort of group description in the OP, which describes a group for people who are passionate about Linux for gaming, but are already up and running;
We want to create a place where dedicated Linux gamers can collaborate and play together, while helping game developers and Valve improve their products and services by offering feedback
But in my eyes, the requirements don't help in promoting a switch.
Don't take this as me trying to bash the group, I am just genuinely interested and trying to understand the motive of the group, as there seems to be some mixed messages.
And just for some background, I don't think it really matters which OS you use, use the OS which suits you better, or has the features you need/ want more.
For me personally, I use Windows for games as in my personal experience I've had less hassle getting games working. With the second main reason being anti-cheat support, as I play a fair amount of online games with anti-cheat that does not work on Linux, or, doesn't work on Linux well.
But I use Linux (Ubuntu, more specifically) on my Laptop, mainly because I don't need the same software support for my use-cases.
I did try switching to Linux for games about 3 or 4 years ago. but switched back just because it was less hassle for me personally.
Just so you understand my viewpoint, I'm not for or against any OS. In my eyes they are both simply tools we use to interact with computers and devices, and, much like any other tool they have their own use-cases. As well as all having their own advantages and disadvantages.
Comment has been collapsed.
The thing is, we didn't want to just create another "use Linux for gaming!" group number #7291, as those already exist in enough of quantity, and I don't believe time and effort into promoting another one which doesn't really stand out from the previous 7290 in any way would be worth it. So instead, the goal was to create a unique group that actively promotes and encourages people to try and stay on Linux for gaming, as we believe gaming with Steam on Linux got to the point that it's a viable thing to consider (it wasn't as good 3-4 years ago when you tried it, that's why I've created the group today, not 4 years ago). You can classify this group as "group where we make giveaways for other people playing on Linux exclusively", if you so wish, as that was also one of the goals, together with promotion, encouragement, community and challenge aspects.
People join the group for various different reasons though. Some, take the pride in meeting the requirements and showing others that they play on Linux, in a matter of automatic verification that would remove them if they didn't. Others are using Linux exclusively and are happy to see giveaways available only for them with far bigger chance than general public. For other people, this group can be the "catalyzer", as @Mitsukuni wrote above, which would make them think "wait, I've considered Linux in the past, and there are now a few dozen of people who game on it exclusively, maybe it's a final time to give it a try". Yet another group of people might just be looking for a friendly community that shares their core values.
And I'm sure those are not all of the reasons why the group has its value. For me, all of the points above are equally important. I'm proud of myself that I managed to come up with a fair enough system that allows the group to run automatically ensuring at any given time that members meet the requirements given. Even if we had only 5 members, those would be 5 members that I hold in high regard as they're up for a challenge I put on myself, and they're winning in it. The fact that I can make some giveaways to reward them is an extra.
Please note that I'm more on the "exclusivity" side, the description of the group was written by Nobbu who is far better at wording out the exact purpose of the group in a manner that wouldn't sound so arrogant and hostile as it was before when written by me. My views do not represent the views of the entire group, the only thing that is universally shared by every member are the rules which are the same for everybody and expect from people to play on Linux exclusively. The exact "purpose" of that is up to them - challenge, choice, promoting alternative to Windows, personal preference, or maybe even actual fanatism for some - it's up to you to decide. For me, I've always wanted to see Linux as a worthy alternative to Windows in terms of gaming, and thanks to Valve and Proton my wish is finally getting out of the fairytales book - I've created a group that proves it. There are for sure people with similar mindset, but as I said, that's my own personal view on that, and the group is supposed to be liberal and welcoming enough for everybody who is up for a challenge of meeting the rules, regardless of why exactly he considers the group nice enough for him to apply as a member. There are no wrong answers here, only a question whether one meets the rules or not.
Comment has been collapsed.
That makes perfect sense to me, and, just to reiterate, I wasn't trying to shun the group, or the purpose of the group. I think it's a great idea. I was just unsure, as it seemed from your response above that a goal of the group was to get people switching to Linux for gaming, but the group requirements seemed to be a little counter-intuitive for that. Hence I asked more out of curiosity.
But do understand the idea now. And I love the automatic requirement checking, it was just the goal of the group which confused me a little when reading through the thread earlier.
I might look at switching to Linux for gaming at somepoint in the near future, as Proton, and the Steam-Deck running a Linux distro really do make it feel like it is a much more viable option now. The main reason I haven't really considered in much in recent times is just time, to be completely honest.
But thank you for the response though, that does clear it up!

Yeah the irony is pretty hilarious tbh. "Those guys want to take away your freedom by force. Follow those simple steps to regain it. We'll boot you if you don't." :D
Besides Linux is an extremely broad term that encompasses dozens of variants, and what they said doesn't necessarily apply depending on which Linux distribution you use lol

Yes, ArchiBot uses GetOwnedGames
and GetRecentlyPlayed
API calls to determine - your total playing time (divided per-platform), and your recent one (also divided per-platform). I keep and compare the results of the first one in the database to ensure existing members do not break the rule, while I use the second one to ensure the member is not playing a fool and actually did not play on Windows/OS X at least during last two weeks, while playing at least a few minutes on Linux. While it's technically possible to fool the bot knowing that, you'll get kicked the moment you gain a single minute on Windows/OS X platform, so it doesn't make much sense. Yes, I spent some actual time inventing and coding that solution, I classify it as very effective.

hi there, i am becoming increasingly concerned with the direction windows is taking and am quite frankly scared of windows 11. i would love to switch to linux. i am worried about the implications this would have for my gaming though. i mostly play league of legends, star citizen, vrchat, as well as a slough of other popular VR games. i know there is a community of 2000 very dedicated linux users on star citizen who are very upset that since the addition of easy anti-cheat they are unable to play the game, as i understand it, this is just a temporary whitelisting issue for wine or something along those lines, but the thing that would affect me the most is VR. can anyone vouch for VR on linux at all, or is this going to keep me tied to windows for the time being?
Comment has been collapsed.
From my experience VR itself works. But it doesn't feel as seamless as it did on Windows (yet) -
meaning I had to get "out of VR" more often to do some quick fixes before going back in.
But that's mostly Game related Issues happening when trying to switch from the VR Home to a game or getting everything to run at the beginning.
But I also don't use VR that often, so I can't say for sure if the issues reoccur or if it's just initial setup problems that, once fixed, don't reoccur.
But definitely worth taking a look at https://www.protondb.com/explore?&selectedFilters=includeNative&selectedFilters=userTags&selectedTags=VR&sort=wilsonRating
(I get more results when syncing my Library best is ofc to search for specific games of interest)

Jesus christ this post is condescending af and ironic as hell on top of it too. Good job, you guys are literally the kind of people who give Linux users a bad name. And I say that as someone who has been using and loving Linux for many years now (along with 2 other OSes because sometimes one is just better at doing something and some games simply don't work on Linux yet as much as I wish they would).
Edit: the post has been edited and I am taking everything that I said back now :)
Comment has been collapsed.
using one OS or another does not make you better/worse than anyone else.
The problem is that the way the post is worded sure makes it seem like that. There is no problem with the concept of it at all, I love it because more Linux players = better Linux support. It is just so horribly, horribly written imo.

Its 2:30am and I am on my phone, but I can break it down tomorrow because there is a lot that I could say about it and why it sounds like that. I showed it to my boyfriend earlier and he said that it reads like some sort of manifesto along some other stuff I am not even gonna repeat on here, so I am definitely not the only one with this thoughts (together with PossiblePsycho from the looks of it).

We're taking criticism seriously, for now we're rewording the two sections that we considered might give that impression, and reworded the initial pledge to sound more like a challenge than a statement. Hopefully that will make it less hostile than before.
Feel free to share your thoughts whenever you'll like to!

"passionate/supportive for Linux gaming"
And this actually shows through instead of what it was before. I wish you the best of luck with the group!
I can only hope one day I can ditch Windows for the 1/4 of my gaming I still do there too (thanks OBS for constantly breaking and where the hell is Battle eye for Proton they promised), but till then I will continue "doing my part" writing countless more Proton reviews for the most obscure, random games and using it whenever I only can :) And can't wait to see what the Steam Deck will bring with it for us.
Comment has been collapsed.
BattlEye for Proton is actually here but it's up to developers to activate/add it, some may decide to not add it if they still see Wine as cheating but I believe they won't be majority (Looking at you Bungie).
1/4 seemed pretty high to me at first but I don't play multiplayer much and checking from ProtonDB that ought to be normal, at least for top 1000, it's exactly 1/4. :) Thinking about 3 year ago, that's a pretty damn fast development.
I'm just glad that how Valve boosted Wine and changed Linux gaming into serious business. Steam Deck will sure add there more. I know they don't care about native games much but I hope these progresses will affect the world view of game developers so we wouldn't need Proton as it used to be (one can dream).
Comment has been collapsed.
I know that, but are the versions that support it out yet for the devs to use? Because so far I haven't heard of any game that has it enabled. I actually think Bungie will enable it at some point. They switched from an inhouse (I think? someone correct me here) anti-cheat to Battle Eye on Destiny 2 right as the Steam Deck news came out so I can only imagine they did it because of Proton compatibility, but so far still nothing...
Actually the 1/4 for me is mainly due to streaming on Windows as my OBS on Linux completely shit itself (something with my Nvidia drivers is seriously wrong and I can't be arsed to fix it because I need to reinstall my OS anyways because my SSD is dying). The only game I play that doesn't work on Linux is actually Destiny 2 except the odd (mostly asset flip) game here and there. Out of curiosity I went to check my ProtonDB profile: 42 out of 294 games didn't work, so about 14% in my case (some of them are 2-3 years old so chances are that at least some more work nowadays).
Oh yea, 3 years ago the numbers were basically flipped around. It has been incredible to watch how quickly things got so much better. Valve has done an absolutely amazing job (also the guys behind Wine, can't forget about them either).
I am actually curious, do you by any chance know if there are any numbers out there about the percentage about how many games get natively released for Linux now vs a few years ago?
Comment has been collapsed.
(The hotkey issues could be Desktop Environment related - some DEs sometimes eat Key-Combos - wild guess)
Comment has been collapsed.
I been using it on Linux for about 2 years (most recently in November). And the only issues I have had (ignoring the Nvidia drivers being busted which is not OBSes fault) were all audio related - every other update something would completely breaks all my notification sounds and it always required some really weird fixes to get it working again. Weirdly enough it only seems to be my system, because I used it on a different one a while back and that one had 0 issues. Just tested the hotkeys, work fine for me with a 2 key combo too. I would definitely ask around about DEs as freezingDaniel mentioned, I have seen some bizarre input stuff with KDE lately.
Oh god, I just now saw that SteamDB has actually a lot more filtering options on games that I ever knew existed. No idea how I have missed that for all this years...
Thats really interesting, I would have expected the numbers to stay about the same, but you do bring a really good point. I was mostly curious if Proton would have caused a drop in % but at least at a quick look it doesn't seem like it considering the percentage is already lower before it came out and then there is a jump back up in 2020. Tho really hard to say much due to the point you brought up of games getting late Linux releases.
Comment has been collapsed.
There are a couple of games switched to it but last time I checked I still couldn't play multiplayer in Bannerlord.
Bungie is an interesting case to be honest since they known for banning gamers who play on Linux. If they enable Proton version they should revoke those bans in my opinion.
Yeah, Nvidia is still a hassle to run on Linux and they don't seem to support open source drivers any time soon. It still can cause problems especially for Arch-based distros, even recently had a problem with 495.46.
I also was wondering about numbers but after looking at numbers Nobbu gave I have mix feelings now. Native game release count doesn't have acceleration while generally dropping by percentage. But I do know about that some of the older games got a Linux version in the past 3 years which is cool.
By the way, I do remember you were using Linux Mint and I didn't have such a problem with OBS (from AUR) recently, so maybe you need a more updated version.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well that's sadly true, Valve cleans shovelware from Steam time to time but asset flips are another problem. I guess if we look into $1 games as percentage that would give us more or less the useless games we can subtract from the main list. Of course not all of them are like this but I bet at least 90% of them either asset flips or shovelware.
Comment has been collapsed.
I will first address this because its gonna be relevant for the rest:
By the way, I do remember you were using Linux Mint
I ditched Mint about 2 years ago, been using Manjaro ever since.
Thank you for the link! I had no idea as I don't really follow things too closely. Looking at ProtonDB seems like it is a mixed bag if it works for people or not. Hopefully that gets fixed.
Yea, I have heard about that. I tried it myself (with Proton, not directly Wine) but luckily I was not banned. Honestly those people should not have been banned in the first place and the bans revoked right after.
Yup, I never had issues on Mint, but on Manjaro its "there was a Nvidia driver update so now my DE won't start anymore after reboot so time to reinstall them again" time every other update, fun times :D But I have to say I haven't actually had any issues with that for quite a few updates now, I just hope I didn't just jinx myself. What is the issue with 495.46? I am on an older version still and a quick look online hasn't found anything that was actually related to that driver specifically.
There is also the other issue I have with OBS and one of my monitors related to the Nvidia drivers, but that is a complicated story and I am not really sure what exactly is at fault there (and there is a higher chance there is something wrong with the config or GPU than the drivers themselves).
I also got to experience the joys Nvidia Optimus on Linux last month. All I can say is I am glad it was not my laptop.
But at least from my experience AMD is not any better, at least when it comes to older GPUs.
Yea the numbers just feel really confusing to be honest. Especially that 2020 number really throws me off.
I do have a version from AUR... and as I say that I go check if a miracle happened and it godamn works now.... It was broken since June (I am lazy, don't judge me) and now it suddenly starts working again... I have to assume some driver update since November when I last tried if it works fixed it somehow. Which is extra weird because none of the other issues I have that are related to it are fixed. This actually made my day now :D I just hope it actually works properly past just starting the stream and seeing if it throws me an error out or not.

I ditched Mint about 2 years ago, been using Manjaro ever since.
Here is another thing that shows the last 2 years passed too quickly for me. I could swear it should be less than it but well.
No problem. I follow Gaming On Linux on Reddit and it helps me to get news sooner. I think BattlEye situation is more like an early adoption, kinda "hey look we're working on this" thing, so it's pretty normal that it being hit or miss. At this rate it will get there in near future. At least they should be ready when Steam Deck hit the market.
To be fair I used Manjaro for 7 years and only two times there was a system-breaking update as I remember, one of them is the past year's big Nvidia purge which is a self explanatory a system-breaking thing. Other than these Manjaro is a very solid and stable OS if you ask me. After recently switching to ArchCraft on my desktop, I understand about Manjaro's 2 week pause on updates comparing to Arch. That 495.46 diver issue was exactly it. I had to tinker to login to my system. I doubt but if the same thing happens on Manjaro as well I would gladly help. :D
I think I too had problems with OBS on dual monitor setup and never used it like that, staying on updated version usually helps though. I hope you get it working without any problems.
I'm so glad I never had a machine with Optimus as well, I don't know how it is lately but it was TERRIBLE. :)
I'm guessing Valve is preparing for another ban-wave for shovelwares right before the Steam Deck's release, that's probably the reason why the last year's number is that high.

Oh yea, time has been passing by like crazy. I didn't think it was that long either till I checked the install date and it came back with: 2020-05-04. And this is not the first install so I am assuming it is ~2 years.
I should probably do that as well, just so I know a bit better what has been going on lately.
Definitely agreed on it being stable. Other than the Nvidia driver issues I have had 0 problems and been loving it. Also AUR is a godsend for lazy people :D I have yet to find something I need that is not in there including some of the most random obscure software.
You are you finding ArchCraft so far? Other than the updates? I am a master of login into the system all kinds of weird ways at this point after having to do it so many times at this point.
Will know today how well it works, if it does work fine its gonna make my life much easier :D
Oh, it is still TERRIBLE. 1 laptop, 2 Linux installs, 3 people, 5 hours and we couldn't it get it to actually switch cards being used properly. No matter what we did it was full on nope, not switching off integrated. We tried everything.
I guess time will tell, but excited to see what happens in general when Steam Deck comes out, don't think it can do anything but good to Linux gaming :D

AUR is definitely much better than using tons of PPAs, and you can change build files for what you need. Not just being lazy but being a better solution at one place. :)
Well, as a WM enthusiast I find ArchCraft is exactly what I want. I was using Manjaro Bspwm for quite some time but sadly it got discontinued. Since Manjaro Architect is also in a similar state (and I was too lazy to install Bspwm alongside with i3 edition) I started looking into Arch-based distros, so I met ArchCraft. It has Openbox and Bspwm pre-installed though I purged Openbox, and I find it very lightweight. There is also Chaotic AUR inside it which is a big plus for lazy people. :D
I suggest you to look into this page since Arch Wiki is a god-like entity, if you haven't looked yet of course.
I hope Steam Deck will make our lives easier. Currently Valve doesn't care if a studio make Linux native games or not as long as it runs great under Linux, Proton or native. This may lead to "companies don't care about Linux builds at all" situation but thanks to cross-platform engines we actually get decent native games comparing to years ago. EAC also will have a native anti-cheat support along with Proton support. That will positively affect multiplayer games in my opinion, maybe not lazy companies but yeah.
Comment has been collapsed.
Fair, but it does feel like an lazy solution when you come from a distro that is not blessed by the greatness that is AUR :D
I heard something about Architect being broken and not working recently, but I didn't know they discontinued it. I guess when I reinstall I will just have to get a straight up a community version. I have learned something new today! Never heard of Bspwm before so had to look that one up. Is it hard to switch to and get used to WM like that? How long have you been using it for? They always intrigued me ever since I first came across i3 years ago, but they also seem very spooky.
I can't help but find this amusing (please, please don't take this the wrong way, because I know you just tried to help and I appreciate that a lot!). First thing I checked was Arch Wiki, couldn't fix it, I ask my bf if he has any ideas, I get a link to Arch Wiki, he asks a friend for any ideas, I get a link to Arch Wiki from the friend :D Now I get a link to Arch Wiki. Bless the Arch Wiki, but no, sadly nothing there helped :( We tried just about anything we could find online including some highly questionable stuff, but nada. Luckily it is not an issue anymore - it still doesn't work, but it doesn't matter that it doesn't work anymore since not gonna get used for gaming anymore.
Yea, devs.... it is also always fun when a game with native Linux support ends up running better via Proton because the devs just don't care to make a proper version of it, if they even make one... I am hopeful, either Proton improving even more or more Linux native games is gonna be a good thing and considering Valves push either of the 2 has to be true (or even better - both). Didn't actually know about EAC native, I only knew about Proton. But god, knowing a thing or 2 about the things they do, I wouldn't trust EAC anywhere near my system. Not that Battle Eye is any better at all, but I got kinda forced into that one. Still glad support is added to since it gives people who are fine with it the option to use it.
Update on OBS btw: tested it out for 3 hours yesterday and it works :D I am so happy you decided to reply to me, because without that I wouldn't even bother checking it again and I wouldn't know it works. There is gonna be a lot less Windows time in my future. So thank you so much for that!
Comment has been collapsed.
You're very welcome, I'm glad to help, even if indirectly. Call it coincidence but I have good news on both things here. First, RedHat donated to OBS, so expect a better support in the future. The amount may not be much but good enough for two people for now. Let's hope they get more bigger donates like that.
Secondly, I came upon a project about Optimus which makes easy to switch between GPU modes. Hope that works fine for your friend. :3
Well, Arch Wiki is really helpful but yeah, sometimes that also happens to me until I see a project about what I try to do and fail. Though interestingly there is a good chance you may find a project about things you exactly need. And they usually have an AUR package. +1 for laziness.
I did love Epic once, with Unreal Engine and all but they lost my respect after things they did with Tencent. I even requested to delete my Epic account even before Epic Games Store was a thing and never looked back. So I understand, I don't trust them either. But it still a good thing that they support Linux and open source. They even donated to Blender and Godot with huge amounts. I just hope they don't end up like Blizzard after Activision.
For window managers, well, if you want to look into it, I suggest to start with Openbox. There used to be Manjaro Openbox, which was the reason I switched to Manjaro in the first place, after the end of Crunchbang. You can do everything using mouse like using a DE and it's still keyboard driven if you like. ArchCraft also comes with Openbox. Though if you want to try Manjaro Openbox, it lives as Mabox Linux. Good thing about WMs is you build everything by yourself, and thanks to many distro you can use pre-configured ones. I used Manjaro Bspwm without changing anything at least for one year. You cannot prevent the urge of ricing if you use a WM though. :)
There are many window managers, many many windows managers, so it's all about choice. You use a WM and don't like one part and thought about what if that part was like this? Boom, here is another WM. They shine on details so it's better to start with mainstream ones. Bspwm is not a mainstream one. :3
But if you still wonder about, I recommend to start with i3wm first. It's a keyboard driven WM (Bspwm also like this) and I warn you, once you get used to it there is no turning back. Manjaro i3 is a great distro for example. And one of the best parts of i3 is it has a great documentation. It has a learning curve but you'll get there if you decide to use.
Oh by the way, forgot the mention the differences. Openbox is a floating WM, and i3 and Bspwm is a tiling WM. Floating is how you know from any DE, windows float around and you move them by clicking title. Tiling WMs are different. A window opens as whole screen, if you open a second window they automatically divide the screen in half. Rest depends on the WM you use.
There are also great tools to use with WMs. I can write here if you want to know more, since I'm lost in a wall of text here. :D
Edit: Manjaro Architect isn't exactly discontinued, the dev just took a break. Also someone working on the leftover project, so it kinda is in usable state, if you know what to do.

Oooo thats nice! They deserve the support :)
And thank you for that link. I came across something similar when I was searching, for a solution, but it didn't work. Will forward this on, thank you!
My problem with EAC is not even due to Epic, it is with EAC itself but that is a story not for SG forums. Tho Epic can go shove themselves somewhere too. They may be doing some good, but they also do a hell of a lot of bad. I hope you had a better experience deleting your account than me (took me legitimately 3 weeks to get them to finally delete it).
Thank you very much for the explanations and recommendations! I have a couple more questions if you don't mind.
A window opens as whole screen, if you open a second window they automatically divide the screen in half.
I am someone who likes to see every window I have open on my PC at once so it seems like something that would be perfect for me.
How well does this work with multiple monitors? I got 3 and one of them is in portrait mode instead of landscape, so I am a bit worried how much of a pain in the butt that would be. Is it still possible to "minimize" some so they don't show? Or set it so a specific thing takes 2/3s instead of half? I assume that is a lot where the "depends on the WM you use" comes into play?
I am really intrigued by it now. I will do some research of my own and shall give it a go when I am using my laptop for something next time. I made it a habit to test every OS/DE I wanna use on there since I have nothing important on it usually so if I don't like it, it can just get nuked into oblivion without a worry and never make it to my main PC. Last thing I tested was KDE last month. No thank you, not for me, I didn't like it at all.
I hope Nobbu doesn't mind the conversation going on here. It counts as a big, long bump right?
Ahhh good to know.
if you know what to do
The magic words :D I did it once, would do it again, but man it was not as straight forward as the other editions.
Comment has been collapsed.
No problem, hope that works for your friend.
Mine was also similar, they didn't make me prepossessed much but it took them around a month to delete it.
You're very welcome and I don't mind at all. And I too hope Nobbu doesn't mind these epigraph of a bumps. :)
Configuring multiple monitors is kinda similar in all of the WMs but multi-monitor support is not good in every one. For example, in i3 every different monitor is also a different workspace. But in Bspwm every workspace has all the active monitors and configuring them is a bit of a hassle. In this case you'd most likely prefer i3, which has a better multi-monitor support anyway. I guess focusing on i3 while answering your questions would suit better from now on.
In WMs you'd want to automate things. You can still use GUI programs but using your own scripts (or modified scripts) would make everything faster. And you can attend everything to a shortcut. When you go deeper, you would use your own scripts like a system app. For example, I have custom scripts for my monitors and I can set them by simply typing "single" or "dual" to the launcher and switch. I do this with a keyboard shortcut but this is also an option.
I do not have a monitor in portrait mode and never used one but setting it in a multi-monitor setup shouldn't be a problem. You can use arandr
to setup your monitors and the best part, you can export your setup as a script to use on a launcher or with a keyboard shortcut.
For tiling WMs, there is no minimize. If a window is open, it's in front of you. But you can send it to different workspace, or set it to automatically open in that specific workspace. (You can navigate between workspaces by using Super + number). For me, Firefox always opens in ws2, qbittorrent is in ws7, Discord Element and Signal in ws4 etc. So I simply press "super + 2" and there is Firefox. It's definitely much better than cycling through tons of windows with Alt-tab. If I know where that window is, I go to it with one click. Simple and efficient.
Edit for addition: There is also a floating mode in i3, so some windows can hover around. For example, no one would want a small calculator app to open in fullscreen. It's horrible. :)
You can resize windows to how to divide the screen. This is more mainstreamed in Bspwm but not a problem in i3 either. "Super + R" and use arrow keys (or hjkl
if you're a Vim veteran) to simply resize them (you also need to press Esc after resizing, because it's a mode in i3). Also note that, shortcuts may differ distro to distro but you can always use your own. (Create a Git repo, put your dotfiles in it and after a format download your files with wget
. Good as new. If you're lazier you can also do this job with a script. :3 )
I also have a similar habit to use my laptop as a Guinea pig, it certainly helps if I break things before trying on my desktop.
By the way, I used those magic words for a reason :D. Last time I checked Architect still had problems but there are workarounds, so you should know what to do if those things happens. Also you can make your own Manjaro ISOs. When Bspwm Edition was not around anymore, I made my own Bspwm ISO. I would prefer Architect though.

Thank you so so so much for the super detailed answers. The more I read about it the more I am thinking
this
sounds
PERFECT
Literally. I always have stuff open a certain way and with my current setup (I use Cinnamon, don't judge please) it randomly (read: at least once a day) likes to not open where it is supposed to so this sounds like would fix that issue as well on top of everything.
What? You don't like your calculator being fullscreened? I thought everyone used that in fullscreen :o tho I actually use a physical calculator because I find it faster.
I have a NAS so files like that just get thrown there, but throwing them also in a git repo as an extra backup is a clever idea I actually never through of for some reason.
I am super excited to try this now and hopefully it will work out for me. Shall let you know how it goes, thank you for explaining stuff to me and pointing me in the direction what to try. I really appreciate it as I been curious about it for a long time, but never dared to try. I just hope it is gonna go well :D
Yea when I installed it I vaguely recall you had to do some stuff in a specific order of it wouldn't work properly. I don't remember what it was exactly since it was a year and half ago, but it did confuse me.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're very welcome.
If someone asks me about Windows 7-like experience I recommend them CInnamon. It's a traditional DE layout so it's okay. I don't even judge people who use TempleOS. :P
Storing in a NAS is also a good idea. Pulling them from Git is cooler though. :)
By the way, if you're going i3 way, this official guide would be very useful. I suggest take your time and enjoy step by step. Manjaro i3 has already a good setup out of the box so you can start by learning keyboard shortcuts. There should be a conky showing shortcuts so you may find that useful as well.
Good luck on your journey. If you have more questions you can bounce them again, happy to help. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup, thats exactly why I like it as I liked how Win7 was :D I would be mostly concerned about someones well being if they told me they used TempleOS.
Cooler for sure and you don't have to rely on your NAS not to break again to be able to access your files.
Thank you very much! Now I just need to find the time to sit down and do it. Hopefully sometime early next month I shall throw myself into this and see if I manage to swim :D
Thank you once again for all the help and advice, you have been way too kind. And if this is something you celebrate this time of the year: I wish you happy holidays as well! :)

You're most welcome! Nah, you'll be fine, it may have a learning curve but once get used to it everything will be straightforward. You also don't need to do everything on your own, just browse r/unixporn, pick something you like and steal their configs. :) Though I recommend using the default config at least a month to see how things work. Also if you want to do something different, probably there is already a way to do it. :3
I'm glad to be helpful.
Note for future: If you want to change the default panel of i3, people usually use polybar
instead. Same thing for dmenu (launcher). There is rofi
you can use as launcher, and maybe more things. These are much more flexible.
I wish you happy holidays too. :)

I am not too fussed about how something looks like (as long as it is not a white theme that burns my eyes looking at it) so I will definitely stick around with default config till I feel comfortable enough to play around with things. After that if I like using it when i will employ the works smarter not harder method :D
Thank you for even more tips! I can't say thank you enough!
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, it has classic Manjaro theme, dark grey and green. It also has a Kvantum theme so even Qt apps match GTK. Dark enough to settle. :)
No problem at all. Hope you enjoy your new system.
I find WMs more stable than DEs because they don't change much. If they're already complete they don't even need an update, maybe sometimes critical ones but that's all. Openbox's last update was 6 years ago and it's still a fine WM. Though i3 gets regular updates even though it's a complete WM.
And one day when Nvidia gives a real damn about Wayland, you may even use Sway (basically i3 for Wayland) and Manjaro has a Sway edition too. A little side note. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
That is good enough for me :D
Thank you!
I didn't even know about that. Tho getting an update every once in a while if there is some bug to fix or anything to improve it is not a bad thing. Cinnamon gets updates all the time and I swear in the 6 years I been using it nothing has every changed. Only my icons break sometimes after the update and then fix themselves again after another update.
Hell is gonna freeze over before Nvidia cares, sadly. But one step at a time for me anyways :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Of course it's a good thing but some software can live long enough without updates. There are people still using Window Maker, it's way too retro, and surprisingly still getting updates. :)
(not a fitting example but anyway)
Cinnamon has/had little glitches here and there but it's good to see it still gets love from developers. Also I find it good from user experience point that it doesn't change much. Like, I used XFCE years ago and it's still the same. If you want to keep your familiar environment that's perfect. People were drowned with Windows 8 over Windows 7.
Last driver update of Nvidia was a little step in Wayland though, hope the rest comes soon-ish. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Holy shit that looks like it came straight from the 90s.... well it looks like it is actually from the 90s, but still. To each their own I guess, but god I wouldn't wanna use that.
To be fair I don't think there is much you could add/change with Cinnamon at this point anyways. At least from my own needs everything is there and everything more or less works fine. Except maybe making setting up task bars being more intuitive, because that is a nightmare if you want something a bit more custom like I got. But it is still better than for example KDE in that aspect where I just gave up setting it up because it was impossible to get it work right.
fingers crossed. I have yet still to upgrade to the latest. You saying that it broke for you made me just pretend the update is not there :D I will update it at some point when I have the time and energy to potentially dealing with it breaking itself.
Comment has been collapsed.
It kinda looks like Uplink, everything has its own charm I guess. :)
Well, Cinnamon's point was one-panel Gnome2 look and they pretty much achieved that, so we can say it's a complete DE. It has pretty much everything even for casual users. Though I haven't tried MATE for years, I'd like to make a comparison since they're both Gnome2 descendants. Time to watch some DistroTube perhaps.
Customization-wise KDE is a nerd heaven. However that much power comes with responsibility and in the end if you fiddle around too much you'll probably break something. So I never recommend KDE for new users. It's cool to play with but it's too complicated to use as a daily system. Still, using KDE+Openbox was a cool thing though.
I say check Manjaro forums first before the update. If there aren't topics about broken Nvidia systems, you're good to go, I guess. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Well that game is almost as old :D but yea, everyone has their own tastes :)
I never used Gnome so while I know it is based on it I have no idea how exactly similar it is. Mate I think I used for a whole of 5 minutes on some VM in college so I remember exactly nothing of it :D Never heard of that channel.
I surely broke some things trying to set it up my way but it was also generally buggy when I tried it (could reproduce 2 of main issues on a system that wasn't tinkered with and found people with exact same issues online so I know it was not my fault for those at least, the rest I can imagine I might set something up wrong). Maybe I just picked the worst timing ever to try it but it has completely turned me away from wanting to try it again because they were pretty major issues (search in the menu not working and full-screening not working). Its a shame because I have heard good things about it otherwise but in the 3 weeks of using it was nothing but a headache for me.
I like to live life dangerously, update first, look online after :D
Comment has been collapsed.
That's what makes it a classic. :D
Today MATE is the closest thing to Gnome2, but with GTK 2 and all it was a golden era, at least for customization. I loved flexing Gnome2 + Compiz to my friends back in those days. :P I was gonna link my 12 year old flexing video but I guess it went down for good alongside with my Google account.
When KDE go for a upper version of a number they start with tons of bugs. At least KDE 4 and KDE 5 was like this, don't know the beginning of KDE 3 and I barely used it before KDE 4. Anyway, you probably used it one of that times. Last KDE 4 version was amazing and when they switch to KDE 5 it was kind of a disaster. Same thing with Gnome 3 though.
I even used MeeGo on my netbook for like a year. I could only connected to my university's wi-fi using terminal, there was a cool command line tool for that but don't remember the name. A lot of thing was like this, so much hassle but still worth it.
Edit: MeeGo is cute isn't it?
Today's Linux desktop experience makes everything easy and I think it is much better than Windows user experience (force-installed Candy Crush for example). :)
With that attitude you would've learn Arch Linux pretty fast. :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Noooo RIP that video could only have been pure gold :D
Nope, not the case here, because that I would understand as it is the case with a lot of software sadly, but this was in the beginning of this November. Tho looking at it right now it seems like some anniversary edition came out in October, so maybe that is what was causing all the issues. Don't have that install anymore so I can't check which version exactly I was using.
MeeGo gave me some very strong early Android vibes from that first image on Wiki and I don't know how I feel about it.
Nokia wanted to make MeeGo its primary smartphone operating system in 2010
Well that explains everything :D Nokia messed up so badly around that time, especially once they switched to Windows Phone OS thingy, should have just gone with Android instead :(
I heard that years ago a lot of stuff what like that when using Linux due to very iffy support. In one way glad I only started using it in 2015 when pretty much everything worked out of the box, because otherwise I am not sure if I would keep on using it back then. Well there is one exception I found of recently: what the hell is up with audio interfaces and why is it so hard to find one you can be for sure that it will fully work fine out of the box on Linux /rant.
You mentioning wifi reminded me of the fact that it was backwards for me with it in school. Back in high school using Windows I remember I needed some weird software to get wifi working on my laptop, but when I went back there for college (HS and college were in the same school complex) with Linux on the same laptop it worked fine out of the box without anything. Funny how it sometimes work out like that.
I will rather stay safe and cozy with a distro like Manjaro :D
Comment has been collapsed.
It was kinda cringe since it was trying to show off every Compiz effect known to the universe at once but yeah it would be fun to watch. :)
Being it that recently is not a good thing at all. I guess they broke something again. When I see something like this I understand Gnome philosophy more. At least they have a stable system.
Yeah, it sure does look like early Android. I thought it would handy to use something like that on a netbook, since the screen resolution is 1024x600. It was a little devious thing to install though. :) Then I went back to pure Openbox (with Crunchbang) after MeeGo started to not getting updates and eventually ends. I also used Enlightenment before that for a short time.
Nokia could've pulled it off but I guess they were too cocky at the moment, also MeeGo was buggy but it was based on Gnome 3 and Gnome 3 was also buggy at that time.
By the way, the command line tool for wifi was wicd. Showing the connection quality of each router by distance was a cool thing though.
Yeah, audio interfaces could be a problem time to time. Unless there was a weird driver issue, audio always worked for me, sometimes with hassle. However I'm using pavucontrol for a long long time and almost never had issues for years. There is also a polybar module for it which has been a delight for me. Because opening a program everytime just to switch from a headset isn't very handy.
it worked fine out of the box without anything
That's the power of open source. If you don't have a driver on Windows or it's too old you're most likely boned. On Linux, there is a good chance that someone has the same hardware and found / created a solution. Most of the time it comes out of the box with kernel update. Something Windows users cannot reach even in their dreams. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Back then I was struggling to run Windows 7 on a netobook like that myself, I wish I was smarter and ran something like that on it.
I guess that is what years and years of dominance in the field does to you. I had to actually go look up if they still make phones nowadays because I wasn't even sure. Turns out they still do.
In distance as in physical distance from it? While that sound cool I am not sure how handy it is if there is 5 walls between you and the nearest router and 0 walls between a further away one.
Yea I had a fun time a few months ago buy a new mic + audio interface. Spend 3 days researching what I want and digging through countless threads as to what would work on Linux and what wouldn't. Ended up settling on something that still might end up having some minor issues and might take a bit to set up at first and ordered it but generally should have worked fine. When it arrived I plugged it in and it instantly worked 100% fine without me having to touch anything... was a big sigh of relief but also annoyance I spent so long on it.
I been always very scared of changing anything when it comes to PulseAudio, because sometimes I feel like it is already being held together by duck tape and might just completely break if I do the wrong thing. Might be very unreasonable but the way it is all set up right now works for me anyways, I very rarely even need to go into the settings.
If you don't have a driver on Windows or it's too old you're most likely boned. On Linux, there is a good chance that someone has the same hardware and found / created a solution.
This 300 billion times over. It is so.godamn.true.
I could have threw my laptop away in 2015 if it wasn't for Linux because the AMD drivers for Windows stopped working (my laptop is old, please don't judge it), 6 years later is still going (more or less, its a potato) on open source ones.
Similar with my desktop, I couldn't put Windows 7 on it (I would much prefer to dual boot with that instead of 10) because the are no drivers for the USB ports on the motherboard for it, but Linux doesn't judge :D

Pretty much feel the same but you learn things as the time passed, I wish I knew sooner too. I had to use Vista on my first laptop for 2 years because of warranty. Though respecting that saved me twice because Acer was a crappy laptop anyway (motherboard fried because of heating). After that I switched to Win7+Ubuntu, When it died completely I sold it as salvage. Funny enough Thinkpad from 2011 is still working rock solid. :)
Yes physical distance but in theory. Of course walls change everything but it was still a cool feature.
I feel you. Finding something that works on Linux pain-free usually costs more. Comparing to past, it's much easier now though. Buying something common is still a wise choice but eventually almost every hardware tastes freedom.
It's kinda true for PulseAudio alone but if you switch to i3, I highly recommend pavucontrol, if it isn't pre-insrtalled on Manjaro i3. Alsamixer does the job but pavucontrol is more straightforward and easy with a GUI.
Usually open source drivers of AMD are better than close sourced ones, that's kinda weird. I find people who can use old laptops efficiently cool. Maybe you don't have a huge beard but you're cool. :D
My 10 year old laptop has Intel GMA 3150 which is equivalent to no GPU, though it can run 100% Orange Juice and VNs so good enough for on the road times. And interestingly it can only run games on 30 FPS on Windows (yes I tried just for the sake of benchmarking) and can run games on 60 FPS on Linux. Practically it cannot pass 45 but still an improvement nonetheless. :)
Indeed Linux doesn't judge. On the other hand there is WIn 11 wanting you to buy much newer hardware.
Happy new year by the way \o/

Sorry for the super late reply :(
I did the smart thing and skipped over Vista completely. Huh I never thought installing a different OS would void warranty? But I guess that depends where you live/manufacturer/store. Any laptop I ever came across had its OS wiped and reinstalled about 2 seconds afterwards.
Oh no, defensively a cool feature, just not sure how useful it would be in the real world.
Oh in my case it was the cheaper option that worked fine, luckily.
Ok, thanks for the tip!
Yup, the closed source ones actually stopped working back in 2018 or so as well, so at this point if I want it or not the only thing I can actually use is the open source ones. Gotta do the best you can with the things you got ;)
Yea mine can't run much either other than basic 2d games. Once upon a time it did run CSGO and it also did a waaay better job on Linux than on Windows. Windows was running it at like 20fps lowest settings, lowest res, Linux managed to get up to 60! Not anymore tho, nowadays it runs at like 5fps and takes about 5 minutes (no exaggeration) to load into a map.
From what I heard the adoption rate for 11 is horrible, which is not surprising at all due to that. Most people wont go out and buy new hardware just to update Windows, especially right now with the prices being all over the place.
Happy new year to you as well! :)

No problem at all. :)
It was because of the store I guess. If it was current me, I wouldn't even care. Though I wouldn't buy Acer either, I try not to buy crappy devices. I installed LineageOS on my current phone the day I bought it and it void the warranty right there. It's been 3 years and still going on. Unless you're unlucky, warranties are usually useless. Extended warranties are especially useless, straight out money traps.
I used to own an AMD (ATI) machine and I could never used proprietary drivers efficiently. Mesa was always better for me.
That much difference on FPS is weird if you ask me. Though that probably changed after some big CSGO update. So your laptop can run Half Life 2 at 60 FPS at least I presume. Mine can barely run Terraria around 30 FPS on lowest settings and it's not even smooth. :) Yet I don't complain, it wasn't a gaming laptop 10 years ago and it isn't a gaming laptop now. Though on Windows I could run Dungeon Siege at around 45 FPS, it was playable. But when I try it with Proton it wasn't so playable. This was of course when Proton was a new thing, so it's probably better now.
I read that Win11 reached 10% of Windows market share. I was gonna check Steam stats page but OS section is currently broken. :D It should be similar I think.
I tell people to take it slow, don't upgrade right away, but some of them don't listen, And the weirdest part, those people cannot even install an OS on their own. If something goes wrong they're boned. :)
From what I see from people, if they're tech-savvy they mostly didn't like Win 11. Others fooled by the MacOS-like look. And then there are some people who bypass the official requirements in order to use a crappy OS. I guess Microsoft is trying planned obsolescence on traditional Windows layout and they wanna force something like Win 8 again.

Agreed on the warranties 100%. I miss LineageOS :( I been using them ever since it was still Cyanogen but my current phone is not officially supported (but the model before is ffs) but I really had to upgrade last year since I was still running a Samsung Note 3. My boyfriend looked into rooting it and seeing what can be done when it comes to ROMs (I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to phones) but we couldn't find anything that didn't seem sketchy af.
I generally have really really bad experiences with AMD in general, so as much as Nvidia is bad, I will still take them over AMD to this day even if people mostly have good things to say about them. At least I can trust Nvidia drivers to work even if I have to reinstall them way too often.
It is really really weird. But CSGO its generally all over the place when it comes to performance (and not just that) so I decided not to question it anymore a very long time ago. I would be very very very surprised if it does. I don't have the normal Half Life 2, but I have Half Life Episode one.... brb downloading, science time, will report findings at the end of the comment.... Yea I am not really fussed about how well it can run games either, I wont even attempt to open something that is not a match 3/solitaire/hidden object game. I can only imagine it must be better considering how much Proton has improved since. It is honestly kinda crazy.
That is actually higher than what I heard, I heard something like 3-4%. It works now and its reported at 10.15%, but I would imagine that is a small bit higher than general percentage since there is a higher chance someone is gonna have a PC that supports 11 if they use Steam.
Did they still not get the memo that people generally don't like change? Tho I think you can set it back to normal look quite easy? At least thats from what I been told from a friend, I am actually yet to even see anything regarding 11 more than 2 screenshots I have seen in the past. Just don't care enough about it to even look it up as it just feels like a waste of time for something I have 0 plans to ever use (my Windows install can't update by itself even if it wants so Microsoft can't force it down my throat thankfully).
Specs: i5 3210M, 4GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7650M
Sooo HL2 Episode one (Native, not Proton):
Crashes anytime I try to open the settings menu (4/4 times) so I have no idea what settings it is running but it is on 1366x768 resolution lol
Ok, I am legitimately shocked. It is not super stable when you look around, but at the spot where I loaded in with a save file and walked around a bit is somewhere around 70-100 FPS. I know it is a really old game, but I expected it to maybe run at 30FPS max considering how bad it does with CSGO or TF2 even. Tho on the other hand if you put all the settings to minimum it does run ETS2 at like 50, so maybe I should have expected it.

When it comes to flashing ROMs, Samsung is a definite no-go for me, especially the latest phones. Even unlocking the bootloader is pain and it's getting harder with every new model, dystopia even. If I had a Pixel phone, I'd go for GrapheneOS instead of LineageOS though. For LineageOS, Xiaomi seems to be a good choice. Easiest phones to unlock bootloader are Google's phones, most of the brands are not consumer friendly. If I bought their phone I should be able to do anything with it, right? But most of them say nay. If only Pinephone was ready to use, I wouldn't even bother with Android.
I guess I was lucky with AMD, even with those old pesky ATI drivers in the past. Yet I have the most problems with Nvidia. For last 3 years, had no problems so far though. I want to switch to Wayland (though some games still have problems with XWayland as I hear) but thanks to Nvidia it's currently not possible. They started to give a damn about it recently which is a cool development. Comparing to AMD they're very slow when it comes to Linux however.
How do you have Episode One without having HL2? :D
Anyway, that means Portal 2 should be fine too. I actually wasn't expecting something like ETS2 to work which is rather a newer game (almost 10 years -_- ). I did try ETS1 on my laptop and it was like 20 FPS. :P
I'm not surprised with 10% to be honest, since Microsoft forcing people to update. And non-tech savvy people usually choose to update, when Windows gives them only two choice and doesn't let them use their PC unless they choose one. Pretty sad.
Changing the taskbar look is the easy part but they already butchered the start menu. From what I heard, there is no drag'n'drop currently and taskbar's location cannot be changed with normal ways. And of course, much more telemetry to sop up precious data.
I found it rather amazing with 7650M because on benchmark websites it's pretty low on the list. Though Half Life 2 is a pretty lightweight game even for its age. Not sure about TF2 but CSGO is really bloated at the moment and Valve probably needs to update system requirements on the store page, still says Ubuntu 12.04. :)

Guess who has a Samsung phone :D Once upon a time it was easy to root them and install stuff so I assumed it would still be the same, big mistake... But I didn't have much choice, other than some absolute no name brands it was legitimately the only phone that fit my needs that I could still buy (even then not 100% as it doesn't have a removable battery but at least it is a big battery that lasts a week+ and I had to import it from another country because they don't sell them here). That is crazy with the fold and shouldn't be godamn legal...
I have never heard of PinePhone before but that looks really interesting. I don't need a new phone for a long while unless my current one breaks, but I need to see what happened out of it when I am next in the market for a new phone :D
I am glad you had more luck than me! And yea, I hope they get their ass in gear and provide better support.
Uhhh good question. It was a very cheap (found a copy for Episode 1 and 2 dirt cheap in a store and didn't have the ability to buy online at that time) way to unlock my Steam account back then I think or something along those lines .
I guess so yea? I really don't use it enough to have tried a lot of games on it. ETS2 is an interesting beast, I can't run it on either Linux or Windows on my main PC (different issues on both OSes) but I can run it no problem on random crappy hardware, I don't get it. Oh yea, yours gotta be quite a bit less powerful then. Tho if I wouldn't have put an SSD in mine it might as well be throw in the trash as everything took forever to load even with Linux.
Oh I didn't actually realise Microsoft already started the force updates to Win 11. I thought it was still something you could opt in by yourself. Silly me for assuming that of them. Especially with their history with Windows 10.
I looked up the start menu, don't like it but at least it is not the monstrosity Win 8 had. What do you mean there is no drag and drop?! Like that is pretty basic functionality? How can you remove that o.o Supposedly the taskbar can be changed normally but that is 3rd hand information I got as I don't think anyone I know even runs 11 yet.
I mean, it is far from a great GPU, but yea, it ran it no problem (still no idea on what settings and its hard to judge just looking at it since the last time I played it was in 2012). I think it mentioning Ubuntu 12.04 is probably the least thing that is wrong there because I assume it would probably work fine. I honestly don't believe it would run anymore on any of the hardware listed at all and the game (at least on my end, I have a very very small amount of workshop files downloaded) its 27GB big, not 15 GB it claims to need.

It's interesting that Samsung S3 Neo has an official LineageOS 18 (Android 11) build while many new Samsung phones don't even have one. Blame is on Samsung here though. Before buying my last phone, first thing I checked was if there is a LineageOS support for it (Not official, an Indian hero maintains it), though I prefer official support but this was much cheaper. It had Android 6 when I bought it, now it has Android 11. :)
To be honest, if a phone is officially supported by LineageOS I wouldn't care if it's an off-brand model. (Big battery is also a huge plus). And Samsung is way too expensive where I live yet they deliver less than others, probably same was everywhere.
Pinephone is a nice project, I got mine thanks to my brother because it wouldn't be wise to order it from USA. Though they deliver to Europe I guess. The hardware is mediocre but it shouldn't be bad when there will be optimization. The software is at beta quality at most but they get better day by day. I guess software support will be better when Gnome release GTk4 and libadwaita in final form. And also if Waydroid runs fast enough, it would be good enough for me. There is also Pinephone Pro now with better hardware but well, software is also important. Currently they're just a developer tool but I want to use it daily at some point.
ETS2 doesn't work on both OSes is very weird, maybe you should contact the developer, at least an e-mail. For me it works on Linux a little faster but I didn't play it on Windows at least for 3 years so many things changed since probably.
My cheap-ass SSD I got it for the laptop had broken at some point so I'm on good-old HDD for some time. Currently I don't care much but I can get an SSD again at some time. Every PC component is expensive so not in near future I reckon.
Yeah, there is a project for drag'n'drop on Github. It seems to be a taskbar problem but still I have no idea why would they lock it in the first place. It's one of the core user habits for Windows users, or maybe even generally for PC users.
Win11 start menu doesn't seem bad as Win8 start menu but it's still a mess in my opinion. I only have one friend asked me about Win11 and I recommended against it. Most of the people I see from the forums and most of them have certain problems.
I only mentioned Ubuntu 12.04 because they haven't change other parts either. And it's almost a decade. :D
It's kinda normal if you think about Valve's general speed. :D
Edit: By the way, I'm currently trying EndeavourOS on my laptop (they have a community edition for Bspwm) and it's pretty good. If you find Manjaro bloated you might want to check it. They also don't hold Arch updates like Manjaro. Though I wouldn't change my current desktop setup unless something goes awfully wrong. Archcraft is also good but it's a one-man project so in case I need a backup there is Endeavour. :)

Huh, looks like they dropped support for the original S3 :( I still have one of those around that runs LineageOS as well. Godamn Note 3 on the other hand has updates o.o It started at Android 4, mine is updated to 9, but I could even put 11 on it now, what the hell (sadly the phone is so old and broken at this point that is only really usable as a backup phone).
There is unofficial version for my phone too, but I don't quite wanna risk something going wrong because I don't know if there is any phone I would like I can get if something goes wrong.
Oh same, but none of those had support either. I got mine for "only" 220€, its a model that is my understanding mostly targeted for "poorer" countries so it is way cheaper than most of their other phones but works just as well at least for my use. The weird thing the only 2 countries I found you could buy it from in Europe was the Netherlands and Germany which makes absolute 0 sense them being one of the richest countries....
Tbf the only thing that would bother me with the hardware is the battery. But yea if the software is not quite there yet, there is no point. But then you get into the catch 22 situation of there not being good software because not being any users and not being any users because no good software.
I am assuming there is just something busted with my setup because I looked around a lot and there doesn't seem to be anyone with the same issues. It used to work fine but then about 6 months ago (maybe more) it all went to hell. On Linux where it worked better and my wheel works fine (unlike on Windows, screw you and your shitty software Logitech) it wont let me login into my World of Trucks account so I can't even start the game. On Windows it logs in but it crashes every 5 minutes. The thing is I can't find anything useful in the logs of either system other than Windows maybe pointing to a RAM issue so its not like the devs could possibly even help I don't think :/ My laptop has the same issue as well and wont log in (but last I tried was when it first happened), but it will login into my account on my boyfriends Linux install just fine... So what I been doing to play it is using the Steam game streaming from my old PC I still have lying around to my new PC because that works for some reason.
Over here luckily the SSD prices have still continued to drop, but thats probably the only component that it is true for.
I have no words for that... I really don't.
Ahhh good old Valve time :D
Thanks for the headsup about it! I am currently perfectly happy with Manjaro, but you never know for the future. Sadly I havent gotten around to trying i3 yet :( Last few weeks were a bit chaotic (as you can probably tell by how long it takes me to be able to sit down and properly reply to anything that is more than 2 sentences, sorry about that) but I still really wanna give it a go :(

They drop support eventually for every phone but I guess they still have builds for those old phones because at least one of the devs still have it around. S3 Neo could be the oldest of them. Though there is also a Linux mobile project including Android devices called postmarketOS, they officially support a couple of devices but there are a lot of devices have been tested by volunteers. Almost all phones have at least one non-working part (camera, bluetooth, cellular etc.) because of the closed-source drivers, so development outside of the official batch goes slowly. But it's something.
If Samsung still have cheaper models that makes sense. "Sold in Germany" part is weird indeed but at least it's in EU and shipping shouldn't be too expensive I assume. Well, preferring something is a choice though sometimes you don't have many options, which sucks. I'd love to buy Google Pixel phones since they're easy to unlock and have huge support options from LineageOS, GrapheneOS, CalyxOS etc. But sadly none of them being sold here. My current phone is Lenovo but I'd go with Xiaomi here because of price / performance issue, and of course they're easy to unlock.
I think that wouldn't happen to Pinephone because it's not alone since there are projects like postmarketOS and there are many devs interested in the project. And interestingly, privacy is expensive in today's world. So I tend to support these kind of projects if I can. (And I'm hoping my phone doesn't break before a stable build for Pinephone :) Battery is currently a problem but at least it's replaceable and they used the same battery Samsung J7 has which is kinda easy to find.
Wheel doesn't work on Windows is ironic but yeah, most of those companies only release drivers once and they don't even update them. Funny, if they make them open source, community would make drivers for free.
It's not a wanted solution but you can force ETS2 to run with Proton since World of Trucks account works on Windows, it could actually fix your problem. If you have crashes on other things too, like monitor freezing and sound goes on, yeah that points to a RAM issue. You may need to run memtest86+. If you have more than 16 GB it would take more than one day, 32 GB would take around 2 days etc. Also running the test stick by stick would make it easier to find the faulty RAM.
It's also funny that website is official. :D
Well, I'd advise no rush and take your time. And don't try it if you're not in a good mood, that surely affects me.
Take your time while replying too, I don't care since I'm an old-school letter lover. :)
Good luck on overcoming that chaos, personal life is first.

S3 Neo is not the oldest, the Note 3 is actually older than it, I swear even if mine is not in great shape anymore those things are built like a tank. Considering it is still getting updated I assume someone must have one in a pretty good shape. There seems to be so many OS options out there and my phone has 0 (at least official). Lesson learned, don't buy phones that are only available in a few countries.
I had a bit of issue shipping it because DHL "lost" (and then delivered back to sender) it the first time around, but nah, it wasn't really a problem or that expensive to get it over luckily. Yea I heard a lot of people are quite happy with those, not sure you can buy them here either (either way too expensive for my tastes anyways).
Fair, didn't even think about there being other similar projects. I was thinking more of what happened with the Windows Phone. Yea gotta love the phones where you can still actually easily replace the battery as they are a big rarity nowadays. Speaking of batteries, I was legitimately shocked when I went to search for a new battery for my grandparents Nokia 1100. Considering the phone is almost 20 years old I imagined it would be quite hard to find. Nope, found instantly. I wish it was the same with replacement parts for other old hardware :(
It does work, but it is incredibly buggy and a very bad experience. If I knew how bad it was I would have gotten a different one. And they do update all the time, its just every update is worse than the previous. Luckily it is plug and play on Linux so I am not very fussed about it as I had 0 issues there.
Proton was the first thing I tried. Same exact issue as native. I am thinking it might be something with my network being weird and blocking access somehow, but then it shouldn't work on Win either? And I assume something in the logs would tell me something along the lines of "hey, we couldn't access the server". It really don't make any sense.
Nope, I don't have any issues like that on Windows, everything else works fine except the occasional crash here and there but it is pretty rare (once every few months). I do however have constant freezes when things get written to drive on Linux but I am blaming the faulty SSD there as it only freezes when copying to one specific SSD (my OS one).
I did run memtest when I first saw those errors and the results were... interesting. It did not take anywhere as long as you said (maybe I set it wrong?). I tested it twice, first time around I only let it ran for about 2 hours because I needed my PC and it did throw out 2 errors. I ran it overnight a few days later and it did a few passes and it was without any issues. I can't really take my PC out of commission for more than overnight sadly to run any longer tests and I don't have any spare DDR4 sticks or PCs that can take DDR4 (if it was ddr3 would be easy).
Yep, I didn't even realise it was till I went to look it up again to link it. At least they are self aware :D
Oh yea, I am not gonna have a lot of patience with it if I am not in a good mood so that is definitely a good call.
Thank you!

Wow, it's even older. Using Android 11 on an almost 9 year old phone should be amazing, they even have official builds. It's pretty cool. Yeah, it feels bad when you cannot find a custom ROM for your phone. There was a Galaxy A3 (I think from 2015) at my parent's house and it was sitting with Android 5 (probably) for a long time. Last summer I found an Android 10 ROM for it and luckily it's usable again. The problem with Samsung, they have many different models with the same name and it's hard to find the correct ROM. Sometimes there isn't any because you notice that model only sold in a certain country.
Yeah they're kinda expensive but still it might be worth investing if you can use it more than 5 years. Though I don't trust them with the hardware either since my Nexus 5X's motherboard fried after 2 years which was LG's fault and I was in the unlucky group because I'm not from US. That was the best phone I had. :(
Well, Windows Phone didn't have open source community behind. Even though it's a giant corporation they couldn't success a convergence device and they gave up like Canonical. Now Pinephone is also a convergence device (they kinda nailed it) though its phone abilities still limited. It will get there. :) Unlike Windows Phone, at least there is a community that passionate about it.
Was the battery BL-5C (I don't know why I remember a battery name) or even older ones? Indeed that's quite surprising. Ah yes, 3310 with a flashlight. Simple days, people can get excited even with a flashlight. :)
Yeah I was so excited with the news of Project Ara and Google dug another grave for its fancy Graveyard. Comparing we cannot even change batteries now it was revolutionary. It saddens me that companies make these phones like we have limitless rare elements.
It's rather amazing that Linux kernel comes with all those device drivers yet they cannot work properly on Windows. I had a wheel (that I sold after some time) and it actually had a newer driver but Windows auto driver update was blowing it every time, so I had to disable it via regedit (what a great user experience).
So it isn't about Windows or Linux version, maybe some weird firewall setup prevents it to connect World of Trucks? Though if you didn't setup firewall on your own, that shouldn't happen I guess. Weird.
I think you should check that SSD's health to be sure. You can use smartmontools, you can get it via Pamac. If it's a critical fault you shouldn't use it for anything. Faulty SSDs act different from faulty HDDs so it could be kinda hit or miss to use it or not. But it's better to not use it of course.
Hmm, couldn't find a thing about those errors. But the test shouldn't be that fast I guess? Bad part about memtest, you can only be sure about if a RAM is faulty but you cannot be 100% sure if a RAM is healthy.
By the way, a little anecdote about EndeavourOS I tried to install on my laptop. I installed Bspwm edition and it couldn't pass the login screen in the first try. And funnily I knew the exact problem, the same problem that broke my installation after previously mentioned Nvidia update. I opened tty and fixed it. If I had no idea about it, I would throw it away. :D
(It was a picom issue btw.)

If I knew what I was doing I would update mine to 11 just for shits and giggles, but I have no idea what I am doing and I don't wanna brick it :D (my boyfriend always did it for me). Sweet, its always nice to be able to bring old stuff back to life! Yea, it gets really confusing really quick.
Ouch that sucks D: I got screwed out of the GTX970 money because not in the US but that wasnt much money, this was a lot D: I kinda refuse to spend a lot of money on a phone, because I always drop them and are not super gentile with them in general. So I would much rather buy something cheap I don't have to worry about too much if I have to replace it (hell, my last 2 phones before I got my current one myself were hand me downs even).
That is a good point! I really hope it will as it looks really interesting.
Uhhhh yea, why do you remember that? :D but yup, 100% correct :D
Oh modular phone. I really wish those were more popular too. I when I was buying my phone I did look at the Fairphone, but too expensive.
Actually now that I think about I think I did have to download some very generic driver, but it was somewhere in the repos so no fuss at all. And people say Linux is not user friendly :P
Nope, I didn't touch any firewalls. I actually can't for the life of me even figure out what it could be.
Network/ISP related -> can't be because it works on Windows
Account itself related -> can't be because it works on Windows
PC related -> can't be because it works on Windows
Manjaro related -> can't be because my bf tested it and he could login. The only difference was that he used a different DE, but surely nothing with the DE can't prevent you from signing into something.
And at this point I am out of ideas. And I have reinstalled both ATS and ETS a bunch of times and both the system and the games updated countless times too.
The Cinnamon version of Manjaro actually comes with a drive utility that shows smart data. I already checked when I first started noticing issues. It is definitely busted (and the numbers go up with each day). Funny thing is that smart still says "Disk is OK" ... yea no its not :D
I just used their preset settings for the test, I havent changed anything so I have no idea. But it did run through a bunch of testing phases multiple times over. Technically the RAM is still in warranty and its Corsair who has great support (at least used to) so I could probably get it replaced just to be sure, but I once again run into the problem of I don't have any spare DDR4 RAM laying around :/ I don't really have any issues other than ETS/ATS so I will just leave it be till I get something more serious.
Yay for Nvidia update breaking things so you knew how to fix it I guess :D Btw I still havent updated my drivers.... but I really need to do my updates because somehow OBS and Pulse audio started to fight between each other and now anytime I stop streaming and close OBS none of my mics wont work anymore till I reboot(????). If an update doesn't fix it I have no idea how the hell I am gonna fix this one (I haven't looking into it yet at all, but it just doesn't seem like something that is gonna be fun/easy). Speaking of that, I need to go reboot because I need my mic and it currently doesn't work :D

Your BF can teach you though, it's better learning without bricking. :) If you're careful and not unlucky you don't brick, and even if you it's possible to revert the bricked phone (again, good luck if it's Samsung :). I only bricked 2 phones in last 10 years, one is revertible but doesn't worth the time (old LG phone) and the other is not so much since it's USB jack is kinda broken, it's hard to make it work and if it moves a little, well... These two weren't mine though. I even installed a custom ROM to my Nokia 5800, before I have an Android phone. I have some experience. :D
I'm glad I don't drop my phones. :P
Yeah, I would buy Fairphone if it was sold here, but probably be expensive. It's the best repairable one we have currently.
I guess you were kinda lucky to find a driver in a repo. If I had to install a driver myself, that usually included put them under some folder in /etc
or something. Haven't done that for years though, so that's probably changed. I remember, I had to do this on my netbook so I can change the backlight brightness. This also applies to the infamous Broadcom drivers, especially on Debian or Debian-based distros. Those were definitely not user-friendly. :D
I'd advise, DO NOT underestimate your DE. Some different configurations between DEs might cause problems. Your problem seems much different though. It's a pretty weird one.
That SSD having a mid-life crisis, definitely not OK. :) Though "uncorrectable errors" means it's probably not so critical (unless you also have bad sectors). You may continue to use it but don't rely on it much, and replace it when you have another.
RAMs are one the most reliable parts, they usually don't break down and if you have a warranty that's great, and Corsair is a good brand too. If you're certain about that there aren't any parts cause issues, then it's RAM. RAM issues are not hit or miss, if you have a problematic RAM, it will show itself. RAM testing is probably the most boring test out there and you cannot be sure if the RAM is perfect.
Yeah, system breakdowns teach a lot. :) By the way, I have some good news for you since you hate Pulseaudio. You can switch to Pipewire (though I recommend try it on your notebook first). It doesn't have problems like Pulseaudio and you will feel it's modern and not a wreck like Pulseaudio. And the lazy part, Manjaro have a package named manjaro-pipewire
that handles all the dependencies and conflicts itself. I'm sure you'll be much more happy with it (no reboots). :)

He is probably tired of my shit when it comes to phones so I am not even gonna ask :D but as far as I know it kinda can't be bricked by just installing a ROM the way it is setup right now, but I don't understand enough to be willing to even try.
Pretty sure it was even in the official one (I can't for the life of me remember what it was called to go look it up, had some weird name). Yea luckily never had to deal with those. Kinda need to count my blessings as the wheel drivers are the only drivers I think I ever had to install, everything else has always already came working.
Well I3 Manjaro ISO is being downloaded as I type this so I will install ETS2 once I get the hang of it and see if it makes any difference just in case. At least I will be able to put one more thing under "not the issue" if nothing else.
It better not be a midlife crisis because it is not even that old. Its less than 3 years old with about 10k power hours so I better still get plenty of usage out of it. The smart data is pretty weird for this SSD but I am assuming the 7k are the dead sectors, but I am really not sure. Its been this way for like a year so while I am aware it could just die at any point I am still kinda using it normally (and too lazy to use the spare I have). You would think I would learn after a double drive failure (they were in the same raid1 ffs) wiped some of my data (nothing important thankfully, mostly replaced everything I lost) in late 2020 but nahh. Learning would make life too easy.
Yea I am really not sure if it is actually RAM or something else. For now I will continue dealing with it since as I said there is not really any other issues that could be related to it and just continue claiming that my case is cursed (PC worked 100% fine, bought a new case for it (which I ended up hating so that makes this even more fun) all kinds of weird issues started happening).
I am currently finally running updates (wanna take bets if Nvidia drivers shit themselves or not? :D) so I will see if that fixed the problem first. But honestly considering how much I hate that damn thing I might as well switch even if it works. On a scale from 1 to 10, how much can possibly go wrong by switching?
Does anyone even like Pulseaudio? I don't think I ever heard anyone say a good thing about it ever.
Edit: may my good old USB drive that I been using for like 10 years RIP. No I3 for me today :( I could take the one I use to play music from my car, but I sure can't be bothered to go outside in the middle of the night.

To be fair it could gone wrong on your own, maybe watch for him to be in a good mood? :P
Well, in open source world almost everything has a weird name. Remembering them indeed could be a hassle. That's why I always write them down on my note program. Otherwise I have to go all the process from scratch, starting with the same keywords on a search engine which I don't like doing that all over again at all. Being lucky is also a thing sadly. My bestfriend has a laptop that cannot run Linux properly, mostly thanks to Optimus. Weird enough, he always finds those hardware that not so compatible with Linux. So I cannot even ask again after trying 3 times. :)
I recommend you to learn a couple of shortcuts for i3, or at least write them somewhere, like switching to a different workspace or changing fullscreen kinda shortcuts, in case something goes wrong. And the most important one, terminal shortcut, which is super + enter
by default. To be honest I'll be kinda shocked if ETS2 still would not work.
For normal usages SSDs should go for 10 years at least. Though I know that you can kill an SSD in 6 month ~ 1 year if you use it in a server that runs constant backups. Worst part of SSDs, when they're broken it's not so possible to recover data. They might seems to be working which is enough to fool the user (I fooled by that at least once, and keep running tests from since time to time). Better safe than sorry. :) 3 years is not long at all but that SSD is a goner that's for sure. That might happen to even the expensive ones.
It's probably not the case but my vote is on the motherboard that being cursed. :) At least it's more likely. 2 parts you never go cheap (or off-brand) while building a PC, 1- PSU, 2- Motherboard. Rest of them you can always replace. Well, at least this is what I learned after some not so good experience in years. :)
Probably it will be fine after the update (Manjaro should patch it by now) but I wouldn't be surprised if you cannot even boot, not gonna lie. :D I don't think switching to Pipewire will cause problems at all but it's a new thing so by Murphy's law it will go wrong in the first try, that's why I recommend to try it on laptop first.
Yeah I didn't see a person who loves Pulseaudio either. Stockholm syndrome at best most likely if there is any.
RIP your flash drive, it lived a good life (10 years is pretty good).
Well, good luck on tomorrow's quest then. o/

Maybe, we will see :D He already taught me how to reverse engineer a game last week so might be enough teaching for a bit :D
Yea true. Also whats up with all the recursive acronyms with the names too :D That is actually a really smart idea I didn't even think of doing. I always end up having to look them up.
Yup, will definitely do that since it wont help me having it installed if I can't use it :D weirdly enough when I tried to test one last time if ETS2/ATS would still not work on the laptop they both completely refused to start (no error or anything, just wont open). Oh well, will see once reinstalled what happens.
Yep, tho a lot of times with HDDs it is not worth the time/money to recover them unless it is something super important. I will be good an back everything off it in the next few weeks, tho I will probably still continue using it till the day it dies. Luckily not an expensive one at least but not that cheap either (1TB SanDisk SSD Plus). But yea it is basically a lottery when it comes to drives. They all will die at some point but who knows when.
TBH it could be for parts of it, but the mobo sure didn't kill the DP port on my GPU (I mean, neither did the case, but still). 100% agree on the PSU (tho I did have an expensive good one die last year when it was only 10 months old. There was a funny burnt smell coming out of it. Luckily it didn't take anything else in my NAS with it and trough warranty I managed to get an even better PSU as a replacement).
With motherboards I am only gonna agree to a certain point. Yes, don't buy the cheapest thing out there (don't look at my NAS thanks) but unless you need some very very specific feature that only come on the super expensive ones I think they are a total rip off. IMO the sweet spot is somewhere around 100-150€. Anything cheaper you enter sketchy territory or just missing stuff you will probably need, anything more is just a pointless waste of money unless once again you need something specific you can't get cheaper.
Good news everyone! It took quite a while to get them done BUT rebooted without any issues :D But the 10 seconds it took for the login screen to show up where really nerve-wracking. I even got out of my way to finally fix all those AUR packages that haven't been updated in months because of broken dependencies so for the first time in like a year everything is completely up to date.
Yep, that is actually a good call! Will also test today to see if maybe the update fixed it, will see.
I wonder if even the people responsible for Puleaudio like Pulseaudio.
Not sure if it is exactly 10 years old, but it must be quite close considering I am pretty sure I have it since high school. It served me well. Tho before it goes into the trash I will still test it to see if maybe it works with Windows as I had it before with some drives that it will only work with one OS and not the other till I format it. Just tested it one more time on Linux, unlike yesterday today it actually connects (can hear the noise) but doesn't actually show up as a drive. So there is a chance it might fight on :D or its breathing its last breaths, will see.
Thanks!

They all started because of Richard Stallman I guess (GNU's Not Unix). Indeed it's a clever naming.
I find a theory about why would ETS2 not start, but after that it doesn't make sense because other games work, it's also a native game which is even weirder. I gave up. I just hope freshly installed system would fix it. :)
I think HDDs are still a more convenient way to store data because they have longer life-span (depends on the server type) and data recovering is very practical comparing to SSDs. I still keep my important files on HDDs. (I also still have a lot of DVDs but let's not talk about that).
it was only 10 months old.
Damn that was quick :/ Well, at least there was a warranty.
Yeah, I didn't mean the most expensive ones but they shouldn't be cheap. Cheap ones cause future headaches. Once I used 70$ one and I know it very well. :)
That extra 10 seconds probably because of the first reboot after the update, that should turn to normal I think. I guess it's a systemd
thing. Don't know why but I'm pretty sure at least half of those broken dependencies are Electron related. Congrats on up-to-date system. :D
When I first try to learn about Pulseaudio years ago, I didn't even understand a thing about this, I mean what the hell is it? At least Pipewire is kinda simple and more straightforward.
I recently threw away one of my flash disks. It wans't working on Windows at all (FAT32) but when I try is as BTRFS on Linux, it could actually transfer files, still was not exactly convincing though. Most important part for me, it cannot be used as an installation disk, BalenaEtcher didn't see it, Rufus didn't see it. I have no idea how did I manage to format it as BTRFS but it's not wise to use ghost flash disks. It's sleeping with the metal fishes right now. :)
By the way, thinking about it now, my oldest working flash disk is also almost 10 years old, using it since autumn 2012. Its case is broken but the main part is still working. And believe it or not it's HP.

Yea I guess he was one of the first probably. But nowadays there is just so many. I remember when I was writing my thesis and had to explain every acronym in it I was losing my mind with them.
They are also still was cheaper per TB even if the prices of SSDs have dropped a lot. looks at the calendar its the year 2022, lets talk about that :D Thought about backing that stuff up on hard drives?
Oh it always takes a bit to boot so it was not unusual, but it was still nerve wracking till it was done. Bad news, update did not fix Pulse Audio nonsense. I thought it did because 2 days ago it worked fine, but today it broke again. I guess it gotta go. You are actually wrong. 2 were because of Vala (don't even know what that is), OBS was complaining about the wrong version of CEF, one I already forgot what was wrong with it and the last one was qt4 refusing to build. But luckily the last thing that I needed qt4 for finally dropped it so it just got uninstalled. Thanks! Feels weird not have a red shield in the task bar anymore telling me to update :D
RIP :( I still haven't seen if I can bring mine back. I wont boot into Windows just for that and the only time I booted into Windows was yesterday and I forgot about it till I already booted back to Linux so yeaaa... Hopefully I remember tomorrow when I need Windows again (for some reason Poly Bridge insist of using the aspect ratio of my portrait monitor on my normal landscape one even when set to 1080p which obviously doesn't work).
I didn't even know HP makes USB drives :D Also I am impressed at the fact that you remember when you gotten it.

We can say it's some kind of a tradition now I guess. Indeed there are too many of them.
I think they'll still be used at least on servers even if SSDs get cheaper than HDDs, they'll get cheaper at some point though. Well, I backed up most of them but I still keep them around. They are the very first part of my data hoarding so they mean to me. :)
Vala sounds like a programming language but I might be wrong. I think last time I needed Qt4 was because of fcitx (I couldn't managed to run Qt5 one) but it was years ago. I'm actually surprised there are still some programs that use it. Haha it's been so long, you get used to see an update notification. You could run into some issues on Arch-based distros if you don't update way too long by the way, more than 6 months maybe? :)
Probably you can't do much about it, if you recover all the files from it or you don't need to recover any you can let it rest. I think you should switch to other SSD when you will install a new OS, that also means installing Windows and I know they may feel as chore at some point, but fresh installs are also feel good I guess, at least for Windows because of all the bloat.
I don't know if they still make but they did at some time. Normally I avoid of all kind of HP devices (especially printers) but this flash disk was a gift, and I can say it served me well and still continue. Well, my memory was great about things and it still works somewhat that good partially but I lost the greatness thanks to this. Mine is not at intense levels so I don't need medication but it still a good idea to not to drive, because if that happens while I drive, it will most likely end up in accident. And I know that pretty damn well because it already happened in ETS2 a bunch of times. It's exactly like if you're too sleepy in ETS2 that you will crash when it goes dark, except without sleeping. :)

I guess we will see what time will bring. They are still 2x the price at least at this point. Ahhh as long as they are backed up then fine, I would be worried about failure otherwise.
According to AUR its "Compiler for the GObject type system". Was a dependency for something to do with Unity. Oh there is still a looot of stuff using it, its dumb. I don't remember exactly which software needed it, but it was some sort of monitoring software. I wanna say Psensor, but I am probably wrong. Tbf the reason it has been there for so many months it was mostly qt4. The rest of the system was almost always updated whiting a couple of days to weeks except the least 2 months, but in my defence I was abroad for the whole of November :D
The problem is I have 0 idea what is on it. Most likely its probably some sort of Manjaro ISO, but I legit got no clue. Tho if I didn't need it for the past month there is probably nothing important on it or I would know. Oh my Windows install has its own SSD :) There was 0 chance in hell I was gonna it let go anywhere near my Linux install. I heard horror stories of Windows just taking over other peoples Linux OSes and I am not taking any chances. As far as Windows is concerned there is only one SSD in the whole PC even tho there are actually 3. It is basically quarantined into its own corner where it can't touch anything, update or move a finger without me saying so - if I was gonna give in a dual boot I was gonna do it properly.
I have owned a HP printer once upon a time, never again. But I must say I never had any real issues with their laptops, but I haven't used any newer ones.
Oh damn, sorry to hear that. I am glad to hear at least it is not intense and I hope it doesn't happen a lot. Doesn't sound like a pleasant time :/

It'll get there eventually but pandemic and the miners put that time onward. They're mostly backed up but it's all fine. I don't need some of them anymore. I mean, look at this beauty. :P
Hmm, so it's kind of object-oriented language, makes sense with Unity. Unless there is a good alternative to those Qt4 programs I wouldn't mind to switch, though sometimes you cannot find an alternative as good as what you used to use and it's even worse when that program finally retired. I still mourn to Alexandria Book Collection Manager, it was the greatest manual book collection manager from GTK2 era I have ever used.
I used to give Windows a separate SSD too, then I started using Windows for only one purpose and it is now smaller than 60 GB so I'm not doing that anymore. :) I still dual boot but I did booting from BIOS at some time too. However because of the exact same reason you mentioned, I still install Windows on a legacy boot drive. Also from my benchmarks, legacy boot opens 2 seconds faster than UEFI boot.
HP doesn't let you even scan if you don't login with your email anymore (not on Linux though) so that's a wise choice. One of the worst brand for printers ever.
Nah it's okay, I'm learning to live with it though I'm kinda lazy when it comes to take notes for the things I need to remember later so that might cause problems sometimes. :) Well, I know Dostoevsky had TLE too, so maybe it's not that bad at all. And thanks.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea you are probably fine without that one :P I never watched it but I heard the ending kinda ruins it.
I never actually bothered finding an alternative. The software still worked without qt4 being updated so I just left it like that :D Never heard of it, but I also don't really have any e-books (I have a few, but nothing that really needs to be managed).
Fair, unless you have a very small SSD that would be a waste. I actually only have 70GB left on an 1TB SSD but I use it for gaming so make sense. Not sure 2 seconds makes much of a difference :P
What the hell.... I shouldn't even be surprised. And yup, absolutely horrible. I have a Samsung printer that leaks toner now, still better than the HP printer.
I didn't actually know it could affect memory that way, so I learned something. Maybe you will write some great books someday then! :D
Double good news:
Double bad news:
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean I won't watch it again even though I don't remember it much, it's that old. But yeah, ending was bad. At least Fringe was good (same director).
Ahh it's not about e-books, it's about physical books. That's why I loved it so much. I was scanning my book covers myself and put there, in a virtual library, exactly the same places where my books are. I couldn't find a program something like that. UI was kinda archaic but it was beautiful.
It's not 1 TB as yours but even if it was I still wouldn't give much to Windows. :) Well, 2 seconds doesn't make a difference indeed but it has a prestige. :P
Actually I started a couple books at some time, though didn't finish neither, however I write my stories for my games now (already have 4 and couldn't release one yet), I need fast-paced programming but it's not work that way. :)
I still wouldn't trust that flash disk but I guess it had a different problem, so maybe it's really is okay. :)
It seems you have nothing to lose with Pipewire then, otherwise it may take some time to fix Pulseaudio.
I recommend these 3 videos, they're a really good start to learn how things work in i3, so I'm sure those would fasten the process of making it your own workstation. And of course, the official user's guide is really good.
When you start to change default things in it one by one, I'm sure you'll love it. Maybe you'll even love the default version from Manjaro i3. Either case, it's poisonous. :D Once you get used to it, it becomes your home. So, have fun. :3
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah my bad, I misunderstood! I assumed it was something that just collected all your e-books, didn't realise it was for actual books.
Yea I just have a very bad habit of starting 100 games and then leave them in a half completed state for ages. Maybe if I didn't have that much space I would be less bad about it hmmmmm.
p
Even if they are not finished at least you have the creativity to come up with them, which is not something everyone possesses :) I do hope one day you will get around finishing it to.
It is acting completely normal now that is formatted into something normal, so I think its safe. I really did thing it was a goner tho.
Pretty much. I did the dumb thing of installing i3 before trying to switch on my laptop to. Dumb me D:
Sweet, thank you for even more resources! Also the live USB to install Manjaro is thankfully smart enough that it shows you the shortcuts directly on the desktop thankfully so I didn't need to look anything up for installing :D But I will definetly take a look at that as I familiarize myself with it. Hopefully once I finally reinstall my main PC on a new SSD it will have i3 installed :P
Comment has been collapsed.
No problem! There are bunch e-book collectors out there, some of them are pretty good too but they're not the same. :)
I do that sometimes too but if I do that I'll probably start over because of the game mechanics, unless it's something familiar. There is also Proton factor though, sometimes I start the game, play a good time but crashes at some point so I wait for a better compatibility and forgot about the game. :)
Thanks. :3 I hope I can finish (at least the first one) sooner than I thought. That means less gaming though.
Oh, so you jumped to the sea before checking how deep it is. :P
Yeah, that conky is definitely a life-saver, especially when you installed first time. I kept it around for a couple months, still don't know all of the shortcuts but I don't need to anymore because I make my own, made would be more correct, I just copy it after a reinstall.
I hope you like your new install. One of the good parts of i3, no one can use your computer unless they also know i3. No need for a screenlock. :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh I have a special pile of doom for games like that as well. If it is not something I wanna play enough to bother to reboot into Windows it will just end up in that pile waiting for a miracle to happen (either works with Proton or I care enough)
Less gaming is not good, but I can only imagine it is gonna feel great once it is done :D
I never claimed to be smart ok? :D I haven't been able to try anything yet. I been trying to finish my submissions for the Play a game you won on SG and Monthy in a month events. God knows how I am gonna beat 6 more games by the end of the month because its not looking good atm.
Oh yea, it saved me from having to ask the interwebs because I needed to know how to close a window :D
Thanks! I am not sure anyone who can get access to my PC even knows how to turn it on but yea, extra safety :D
Comment has been collapsed.
That's... quite a list. Wait, Vanguard Princess doesn't work? I remember it as native.
...
Okay, its ProtonDB page looks horrible. I think this is the second native tagged game I saw that doesn't work on Linux, other is Cossacks 3. I do the same for a while too, if it doesn't work on Linux, I wait for another Proton release. Though I removed the Windows part entirely. :3
By the way, can I use Backlog Assassins site without participating in events? It seems very useful. I can't even finish PAGYWOSG events some time, so I'm not sure about another one. :)
Yeah, closing a window in i3 could be tedious at first. You can always change the shortcut though. I use super+x in my setups for example, or super+z for terminal. Being lazy is useful. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea its horrible. Valve should remove the fact that the game supports Linux from the store because the dev obviously doesn't care that it doesn't work. IMO should be straight up banned for deceiving customers, but I guess that might be a bit much.
Sadly those 2 are by far not the only 2. I pretty much use my Stream reviews excursively to bitch about devs lying about Linux support and I am at 14 games now already.
Oh yea, you are not forced to join anything (I haven't in a very very long time), you can simply just use it to track your backlog progress. You do need to request to be added to the site here tho, but I don't think they ever refused anyone.
Yea not really a fan of the shortcut for it, but on the other hand it is something you wont just accidentally press I think :D (I have this issue with Firefox, there is some odd key combination that closes my browser completely and I can't for the life of me figure what it is because it only happens maybe once a month or so and it is not listed in the shortcuts page from what I can tell).
Comment has been collapsed.
They can at least add some control mechanism I think. Something like checking them once a year. Banning devs would be too much indeed. However they should withdraw from Linux market if they cannot deliver what they promised. I understand that making a cross-platform game is hard but even Unity can extract games as Linux compatible without much effort. And somehow, indie devs are usually better than AAA devs when it comes to Linux support.
That's actually pretty much, nice finds. I guess you found untested Unity ports (I can swear some games are like that). :D
That's good to know, I shall seek my acceptance then.
Haha, that's true. Until your muscle memory betrays you at some point. Happened a couple times on my home server, at that time it had Manjaro Bspwm and it has the same shortcut but as exiting the system instead of closing a window, such a pain in a server. :D Since then I use Ubuntu as a server (when I reinstall it will be Debian) and it has 282 days uptime.
I guess you're talking about Ctrl+Q shortcut. Some programs have that for default. It closes the program, however super+shift+Q closes the window. A little nuance. :)
By the way, how's using i3? :)
Comment has been collapsed.
They should, but I don't think we will ever see the day. Yea for sure, if the game doesn't work it shouldn't show on the store that it does. I think it is actually a big mixed bag as to how devs react to Linux both with AAA and Indie devs.
The best is the one where the Linux version doesn't actually download anything.... like, cmon... that is bare minimum testing to make sure you actually got some files...
Heh I have a server which I literally can't shut down because I forgot the root password for it and it is currently logged in as root (yes, I know, you don't need to say anything). If for some reason needs to be rebooted at some point I will have to to either sit there and try 3 billion password combos or reinstall the whole thing D:
Nope, it is not that. It has to be some combination of keys in the bottom left corner of the keyboard. So ctrl + W and good old alt f4 are also out of question. I do kinda wonder if the shortcut is actually for something completely unrelated that just doesn't work properly and instead crashes the browser (I swear FF has been trying really hard lately to make me stop using it).
I still havent gotten around it sadly :( Since the last comment I have managed to beat 2 games I needed for the events but still 5 more to go by the end of the month. So I guess it will have to wait till then. And no, I have no idea how I will manage to beat 5 games in time.
Comment has been collapsed.
With the Valve time and all, I'm afraid that's most likely, hope is a hope though.
The best is the one where the Linux version doesn't actually download anything....
That's actually hilarious. They should've noticed something like that but well... Did you try to report it, maybe that could work.
Okay I won't say anything but just this: Keep it alive as long as you can. :D
In that case I have no idea, at least I'm pretty sure something like super+x or super+c doesn't close windows by default in i3. Perhaps it's really crashing, maybe you should check it by running Firefox in a terminal. Well, since the last engine revamp they already lost many users which is sad. I saw so many threads about people leaving Firefox, maybe I'm lucky but didn't have those kinda problems yet. You can also try Librewolf to see if it's also crashing like Firefox (assuming not a keybinding issue). It's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox but still Firefox.
Well, a game by day is hard, even for short games so good luck with that. Maybe you can sacrifice the longest one? If it's some kind of an obligation, then best of luck. :3
Comment has been collapsed.
I did report it months ago but unsurprisingly Valve did nothing about it. Maybe I should actually report it via support instead of the report function because that is really bad (I just did now, we will see if it does anything). Tho at least there is a refund option, but it is a waste of everyones time.
It is not actually a i3 issue, it is something I have been happening on and off for the past few months-year. It happens rarely enough that I just simply reopen the browser and open the tabs I had in it again manually and move on, but it is still annoying when it happens (I have on average probably always around ~20 tabs open, mostly pinned ones and it forgets what tabs I had pinned). Yea I don't wanna leave it as I used to really like it and it makes me sad to see it lose more and more marketshare, but it feels like it doesn't want me to use it anymore. Yup was considering either going for LibreWolf or Brave and seeing how they work out for me.
Thank you! I have managed to beat another one since the last message and I am basically right at the end of 2 more games (sadly with one I seem to have hit a breaking bug right at the godamn end of a ~7 hour game and the devs know about it since 2020 and it hasn't been fixed...). Best case scenario only 2 more to beat by the end of today, worst case 3 if I don't manage to get around the bug somehow.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think report button works when the report count reaches at certain point. however one report is enough when you report a user. With support at least you get a reply and see how things going on. By the way, if you didn't play more than 2 hours I think refund option goes automatically, technically only wastes your time. :)
If that happened in all of your installs, it's either you found a bug, there is really a shortcut we don't know or somehow you make Firefox crash. If you didn't change your hardware in the recent years, my vote is on bug. Note for Librewolf: You cannot use your Firefox account with it\ you can use a password manager to fill in login credentials though, and last time I checked it wasn't saving the last opened pages which could be a drag for you, I'm not sure if it's because of privacy reasons. By the way, I'm telling this because you have many tabs open, you can use this add-on to make tab groups. It's first introduced in Firefox 4 if I remember correctly but they removed it later because was causing a lot of bugs. It also has a backup option which is a life saver.
Good luck with the bug too, game-breaking ones are the worst.

Yea I guess so. No answer at all to my ticket so far tho and I given them all the info they could possibly need and well they can check it out and test it very easily themselves too. We will see what happens.
I had it crash 2x afterwards when I wrote that message and it is 100% a crash because once the only key I was holding was control and that is sure as hell not a shortcut for anything (at least I would assume). I am not too fussed about saving credential. I do have a FF account but I only use it to save and automatically install all my addons, it doesn't save credential so that doesn't make that much of a difference to me. I don't care about grouping tabs, but I could use something to save and backup them for when FF decides it doesnt wanna live anymore so I downloaded it and I will see how it works to back tabs up.
Thank you! Solved that by using an older save and all games done :D

Unless you have a stuck button (which is unlikely breadcrumbs? :D) I have no idea. Though one more suggestion: Since you mentioned you have a lot of add-ons one of them might causing this. You can start Firefox in troubleshooting mode, it's under the help menu. This will remove any modifications on Firefox, add-ons, themes etc. Bookmarks, cookies etc. will stay. If you have a suspicious add-on start with that one. Checking all might take some time but you can trust officially supported ones, or give them a low priority.
You actually made it huh, congrats. :)

The only key that could possibly get stuck is ctrl (keyboard case is a bit busted) so not the case.
The problem with that is that I only have enabled the addons I actually use and need and the crashes are so infrequent that it is less of an inconvenience for me to have my browser crash than to not have some of those addons, if that makes sense. I will either hope it gets fixed someday or switch browser.
Thank you :D when I set my mind to doing something I will do it :P

If one of the add-ons didn't get update recently, probably that's the accountable one. So an update may fix the issue. Though sometimes devs drop support but if it's a useful add-on someone most likely will make a replace of it, might worth to check new and similar ones.
Wish I could eradicate my backlog that quickly as well. :P

Finally got an answer from Valve
Hi there,
Thanks for letting us know. I've made a report regarding the OSes supported to the appropriate developers.
You may be able to get this game to work on Linux by using the new Steam Play Proton feature for Linux. The game isn't on the whitelist, so there's no guarantee that it will work.
Please submit all issues or bugs occurring when using this new feature, to the Valve - Proton Github bug database using a GitHub account. This database is regularly reviewed by the Valve development team.
In the meantime, the best source for further troubleshooting steps and suggestions can be found in the Steam for Linux community discussion as well as consulting our Proton - Quick-start Guide.
Basically they just report it to the dev who will most likely do nothing. Lovely. And I know for a fact the Proton version doesn't work either.

I think they intended Valve developers but I'm not sure. Last part is generic since I know it from at least 3 of my support messages.
If I understand right they might contact you again (happened to me once but it was a different issue).
I can throw them a report too if you want, doesn't matter if I have the game or not. They shouldn't let those empty games fly around.
Comment has been collapsed.
I am pretty sure they meant the game dev, because you don't need a Valve dev to fix that. Also doesn't seem to me that they would, at least I don't see where they say that.
You don't have to but this is the game if you want to.
Also I lived life dangerously and updated from Pulseaudio to Pipewire directly on my PC first because Pulse absolutely lost it. Worked fine first try and so far so good (I hope I haven't just jinxed myself). Thank you for the suggestion! :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Didn't know old games also get Linux builds. Well, I sent one too, wondering what will they reply. Also reported it as broken.
Glad it did work. Pipewire handles things pretty easy comparing to Pulseaudio isn't it. :)
I'm also thinking switching to Pipewire even though my Pulseaudio isn't broken. Though I'm thinking about changing my entire workspace into Wayland + Pipewire + RiverWM + swhkd... the list goes on. I have the will and heard that Nvidia finally caught up for most cases, still no VRR, (upgraded to 510.47 and didn't break anything) and it's generally usable. However I also heard that Electron apps are very problematic so basically that's what holding me for now.
I feel like we are very close.
Edit: By the way, I got a reply from Steam support and yeah they redirected me to contact the developer. Also I noticed that there is no Linux under system requirements part but somehow it has a Linux (SteamOS) badge.
And is the game a DOS game? Because I saw some reviews about people couldn't run the game with the pre-installed DOS package that comes with Steam, but they managed to run the game via another DOSbox emulator. You can probably run the Windows version with DOSbox but doubt you would want that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I am not sure you can say it has a Linux build since there is no proof so far that it does exist :D
Oh yea it great, so far I had exactly 0 issues with it. It is refreshing not to have to reboot your PC 5 times a day because Pulse decided out of nowhere it didn't feel like working anymore.
Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully nothing breaks as you switch! :)
Yea I noticed that as well, it is really strange. Oh on Windows the game actually worked out of the box fine for me, but honestly, even if it didn't nothing of value would be lost as the game definitely did not age well at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm suspicious about how Valve checking things. There isn't even an information about their Linux "build". Just the Linux badge and that's all. :D
Pulseaudio is dead, long live Pipewire. :)
Thanks! Haven't started it yet and waiting for a development about Electron apps, then I'm off to the new waters. :)
Well, some games definitely do not age well. Especially the ones with weird camera angles.
Comment has been collapsed.
I am not convinced Valve checks anything. They just trust devs to do stuff right. Unless you abuse anything $$$ related, then good bye your game.
\o/.
You are not gonna believe it, but I found someone who uses Linux and has nothing against Pulseaudio earlier today. I was needlessly confused, but I guess he was just lucky to never had issues with it.
Yep, you are gonna always have classic from an X period of time and the ones that are better left in that X period of time.

Ahaha sorry, I hope you don't mind the random bumps!
I envy you, although I seem to have resolved my issues for good with it by uninstalling it :D

At least they do the banning right. They surely are busy with the Deck these days but it would be hilarious if there will be a ban wave with Deck's release, it's been some time since the last one I think.
To be fair I didn't have problems with Pulseaudio for quite some time too but had problems on different computers and at least one of them was a reason to pull hairs out. :) I don't know the before times when there wasn't Pulseaudio however it was also a step up to using plain Alsa and I know configuring Alsa could be a headache. Though I'm gonna say, with pavucontrol
, Pulseaudio is still kilometers away from what Microsoft has to offer. They still use the same UI from 90's when you need to tinker your audio devices I guess. :D
For the same reason I didn't get Prince of Persia series when the whole package had 80% discount (plus Ubisoft), because I remember them as "How the hell I passed that level, I sure don't want to play that again" even though I don't remember the games themselves much. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
There is some site out there that tracks when stuff gets banned, but I don't remember what it was and can't find the specific one either (wasn't SteamDB).
I think might just hate me in particular for some reason then :D Because even back on Mint I had issues were Pulseaudio would just decide "right, I am pausing what you are watching and muting your audio now for no good reason other than i don't like you".
Yea I generally don't bother with old games since there is so many new games to play :D But I been trying to find a version of Sonic that was the first game I have ever played just for nostalgia sake, but I can't find the right version on PC :( Looks like Sega simply never bothered porting that one.
Comment has been collapsed.
Could be yea! Looks kinda similar to what I remember, thank you! :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I think it's madjoki's site which Nobbu mentioned before me. And apparently they just banned some games 2 weeks ago.
Well, that's probably your hardware, you might have some unlucky part. Because driver problems usually kernel related not a distro itself.
I agree, there are so many new games to play. :) But old ones have a special place in our hearts.
I probably know which Sonic you mentioned, though there are so many Sonic games that probably even Sega don't know which one is which. :D For me it was Felix the Cat, not sure about being first but definitely the most memorable one.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea it looks very similar to what I remember so there is a good chance it is that one.
I am not the only one that had that exact specific issue on Mint, there were multiple people reporting the same thing so it was either everyone with very similar hardware or something was actually properly busted.
I think it should be this one, but I am not 100% sure. All I really know is that I played it on the Master System 2 and the game I bought on Steam that should have been the same game it was a different version of it. I do still own the Master System 2 so I could just play it there, but don't have a TV to connect it tho :( Never played or watched Felix the Cat, I just vaguely know of its existence.
Also I used the Panorama tab thingy for FF just as a backup for my pinned tabs and works wonders, thank you for sharing that!
Comment has been collapsed.
Now I wonder if it was actually a Debian problem rather than Mint. I'm suspecting about Realtek somehow. :)
Ahh seeing Sega Genesis made me emotional. I didn't have one but I played a lot at my cousin's. Though not sure if Genesis and Master System 2 had the same Sonic. And yeah, people say the Steam version is very different from that one. I think you don't need an actual TV, something like this should do the job, assuming MS 2 has analog.
You're welcome. Perhaps there is also an add-on just for saving open tabs but not sure, though Panorama does it very well.
Comment has been collapsed.
I honestly couldn't tell you, it had been way too long ago. It did eventually fixed itself.
No, from my understanding the Genesis had a different version - the one that is actually on Steam. And I own and have played that one, it is similar but not the same game sadly.
Oh nice! I knew those existed but last time I was looking they were upwards of 60€. I am not sure if that exact one would work on it, but there is a good chance. Would have to check, the poor thing has been sitting in its box for 10+ years. At this point I wonder if it even still works.
Might be, but Panorama works wonders for what I need to I will stick with that. Great time saver :D
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know which one is older but apparently Sega put the more popular one on Steam. So your only luck is either an emulator or your good old MS2. :/
Wow, 60€ is a robbery. They would probably work without a technical problem but converters usually feel different from what you expected since those games originally designed for CRT monitors. Though I heard there are also CRT emulators, haven't tried myself. Maybe buying a good old TV is easier. :)
Yeah, if it isn't broken don't fix it. :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea might have to try and find a way to emulate it at some point, but there is so many other games to play first that it is just a distant thought.
Yea, there was no way I would ever spent that much on a converter just to play one game. Yea not sure how well exactly would it feel but I really don't wanna go back to looking at a CRT screen.

Yea backlog will always be the biggest priority to me.
No, I actually don't like it to be honest. Never enjoyed the look and I like my text to be clear and unwrapped.
RIP bumps, I hope someone bumps the thread every once in a while :)

I actually find the post just fine, and all of Nobbu's/Archi's responses have been so far very polite and helpful even if some people are being kinda aggressive for some reason...
It's an invitation to a Linux exclusive gaming group, they included their pitch but nobody is being forced to do anything. It has requirements if you want to join, just like many many other private groups on SG, nothing wrong with that.
And this post has good timing too, you know with the Steam Deck coming out soon and the recent LTT Linux challenge.
I'm a Windows user, but 100% support Linux and open source :)
Comment has been collapsed.
The original post was edited, so I have no idea which version you actually read. As of what it is right now I think it is perfectly fine as well and I am gonna edit my comment to reflect that in a sec :)
I have no intention buying the Steam Deck as I don't game on the go, but I am very much looking forward to see what it brings to "normal" Linux users (thank you Valve for all you have done for Linux gaming in the past few years <3). As for the LTT videos, haven't watched them and from what I have heard about them I decided I wont watch them to preserve my own sanity :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes I did get the original post when I first read it (which mentioned stuff like privacy and Windows telemetry), and that was also fine by me. After all it's a valid complaint when it comes to Windows.
The LTT videos are actually not bad, they do show some of the issues faced by casual users when moving to Linux as their main OS. And it has actually resulted in some positive feedback with some fixes made to address some the problems highlighted.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well we are gonna have to agree to disagree there then, to each their own opinion. And yea while it is true there is a way to go and write about it imo (tho you can lock down Windows pretty well if you take your time to do it).
Changes like installing Steam doesn't uninstall your desktop enviroment anymore on Pop_OS I hope :D

you can lock down Windows pretty well if you take your time to do it
Having a hostile OS by default is not a good look, the idea that I have to go out of my way to have an OS that respects my privacy and my choices is kinda ridiculous if you think about it, not mention that I have to go over it again each time it updates/upgrades...
Changes like installing Steam doesn't uninstall your desktop enviroment anymore on Pop_OS I hope :D
Yes that particular thing seems to have been fixed: https://github.com/pop-os/apt/pull/1
A full list: https://github.com/glibg10b/ltt-linux-challenge-issues

I never said it is not a bad look. I hate Windows so you don't have to convince me it is a bad OS (only thing I can say its better is compatibility). I am just saying that you can lock it down if needed is always an option.
I took a look at that list. There are definitely legitimate complaints I can sign myself under, but some of them are also really silly or misleadingly marked, but looks like this is a list made by a 3rd party not by them.

Hey! Is keeping play times open after joining a group requirement? Or is it acceptable for members to simply currently play games on Linux exclusively and give you their word that this will remain the case? In my case, I keep them normally hidden out of actual need (I can elaborate if you need me to).
Comment has been collapsed.
We did some tests and it seems this will work for us, thanks for a nice suggestion.
As a side note, if you by any chance have profile/game details set to "friends only" instead of "private", then it's possible to add ArchiBot to your friendlist and it'll be able to verify you automatically without a need of executing the command. This however doesn't apply if you're keeping your profile/game details completely private - you'll need to manually verify in this case.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've just finished implementation of additional ArchiBot feature that makes it possible. I've included all the details in our FAQ.
Is it possible to participate with private profile/game details?
We require your game details so we can verify that you meet our rules to join, and that you keep your promise to play on Linux exclusively. It's not possible to entirely skip the rules, but it is possible for you to keep your profile/game details private for the most part, switching it to public only for a few seconds to pass the verification, after which you can keep it private for up to the next two weeks. This will allow you to keep your profile private (for the most part), if you're willing to do so for additional inconvenience that comes from the manual verification. The process is similar to the one that exists on SteamGifts.
.
.
How do I pass the verification manually?
Firstly, you have to get accepted into the group as everybody else, which will require from you public game details and sending a membership request. After being accepted, you can turn your profile private.
.
Manual verification will involve sending a !linuxcheck command to ArchiBot through Steam chat. You can either add ArchiBot to your friendlist and use private chat, or if not possible/wanted, use our group chat for that purpose. In order to pass manual verification, you'll have to temporarily change your profile/game details to public, and afterwards send !linuxcheck command to ArchiBot - it should respond shortly with the details involving manual verification.
.
If you've passed the verification, you can change your profile/game details back to private. You'll have to remember to repeat this process again not less often than each two weeks. If you forget to do so and there will be more than two weeks passing since your last successful verification, unfortunately you'll have to be removed from the group, as we're unable to verify that you still meet the requirements.
.
While we understand the inconvenience of this feature, it's the only way we can allow people with private profile/game details to participate in our group.
Whether that will satisfy you or not, that's up to you to decide, for us that was the middle ground we could consider that is still fair in regards to the rest of the group, and ensures that you're meeting the requirements.

Pretty nice! That works for me, yes. Thank you!
As a suggestion, consider a feature so that, if after 10 days since the last sync the person has private profile/play times/whatever and has ArchiBot as a friend, the bot will send sync reminders every 12 or 24 hours. That should handle most of the "oh crap I forgot and got kicked, please readd me" cases. I'm terribly guilty of losing track of that stuff and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks for a great suggestion, I've added this feature.
If you have ArchiBot on your friend list, then it'll try to send you automatic reminder approx 5 days before the deadline. However, it's still your responsibility to verify on usual basis, even if the notification doesn't arrive for some reason.
And there is one more nice thing to note in regards to this:
As a side note, if you by any chance have profile/game details set to "friends only" instead of "private", then it's possible to add ArchiBot to your friendlist and it'll be able to verify you automatically without a need of executing the command. This however doesn't apply if you're keeping your profile/game details completely private - you'll need to manually verify in this case.

I have been kicked from the group, haven't launched the Steam client (let alone play) on anything but Linux recently tough.
The !linuxcheck command says I pass the "Recent Linux playtime" test but now fail the "Overall Linux playtime" test. What's the new requirement for that? (Assuming that means the bot is no longer satisfied with my meager ~1h of recent playtime?)
Comment has been collapsed.
Hey, this is because I've added additional verification of whether every member has any recorded Linux playtime overall, in addition to recent one. As it stands right now, you don't have any Linux playtime recorded (according to Steam API), so I can't verify you as a Linux user.
Please consider launching any of your paid (owned) games on Linux for at least 5 minutes, this way I can classify you as Linux user and therefore re-invite you back to the group. I'm not even sure why you don't have it already, it seems as if you didn't launch any game on Linux since Steam started recording playtime on per-platform basis, it's possible, but extremely uncommon.
I'm sorry for inconvenience.

Not joining as I don't meet the requirements, just wondering how the Linux community looks at cloud gaming solutions like Geforce Now/Stadia/...
Are these considered as legit gaming options to use on Linux or are they still considered to be 'Windows' gaming (GFN uses windows based servers, Stadia is Linux based I think)?
Comment has been collapsed.
In terms of the rules, GeForce Now sadly doesn't meet the rules, as their servers are hosted on Windows and therefore classified as Windows gaming. In terms of personal view on that, I agree with refusal, as for Steam and entire gaming market, those people are classified as Windows users, regardless whether or not they're using Linux. Plus, it's cheating, no different than using a VM.
Stadia is much better, as indeed I think it uses Linux servers, and therefore that would make it pass the rules. In terms of personal view I also agree with that, as that's no different than playing on a Linux VM, and even if somebody from Windows did that, he's effectively playing on Linux, not Windows, as Windows would just be a streaming platform in this case - same as Android, OS X, or any other platform. It's not as native as it could be, but I don't see a reason to frown upon it.
Therefore, as long as your streaming platform uses Linux, you're good to go. Sadly I can't make the exception for non-Linux streaming platforms, mainly because it's impossible to detect, but even if it was, I don't really agree with it as being "Linux gaming", same how running a Windows VM on Linux isn't really "Linux gaming" either.
I hope it answers your question.
Comment has been collapsed.
I understand completely how they're not included in the rules, no arguing there ;)
Your answer does indeed help me understand how the 'Linux community' looks at (cloud) gaming in general, makes sense that using windows based cloud services is in the same category as using a windows VM. Thanks!
