I have just recently acquired $300 dollars and I am looking to purchase a good monitor. I would prefer that it stay below $250 but if need be I will spend more. I am currently on a 26' HDTV that only has a refresh rate of 60 Hz so half of my games flicker a lot. I would like some suggestions and personal experience with the monitors would be nice. Thanks! =D

Dell UltraSharp U2412M

16:10 is a far superior resolution compared to 16:9 for everything, unless you only watch videos in 16:9 and are ocd to the max.

I'm currently using a 27.5" Hanns-G and haven't had many problems. I have it running through a complicated setup which has it getting video from multiple sources so I get an occasional hiccup when turning it on. Once its on I have no issues.

To be clear, here's my setup. My pc is connected to the monitor via HDMI and I have a VGA-> Component converter connected to a switch with a 360 and a cable box. The "hiccups" occur when I have 2 things running at once and am switching between them. Otherwise, its a good monitor that's below $300.

100% of the people don't see flickering on a 60 Hz video.

Question of response to input is a different thing, that you might feel, but definitely can't see. And you cannot fix this with a 120 Hz monitor, get better hardware.

The problem might not be of your screen, QuantumSolace. Your computer might be lagging due to an excessive CPU usage, low ram, or dated graphics card. A 60Hz monitor (if actually supplied with such frames-per-second by the graphics card) shows extremely fluid movements as is: the human eye perceives "still images" (i.e. flickering) when the frames-per-second drop below 24Hz (more or less).

Before you spend those $300 I'd suggest that you check the frames per second your games are outputting. Some games have console commands that show the frames-per-second on the top left corner (for example).

Flickering due to refresh rate happens on CRT but not LCD, so the main question here is what you mean by flickering. If your HDTV is otherwise okay for you, then it would be good to understand the problem and try to solve the real cause.
