Brave browser block it by default, also there is a webpage on the ublock reddit where you can track the update of the script (as Google updates the configuration to block ads twice a day).

Also you can try "Fadblock" extension. Plays the ads in 50ms, so you aren't technically blocking t he adds and the popup doesn't show.

This is the webpage that test if current uBlock Origin version works with blocking youtube:

I'm personally using uBlock Origin but thanks for the Fadblock suggestion, it looks interesting, I wonder if it helps creator's revenue since you're technically loading the ads.

Yeah, the ads show as seen because well, you technically saw the ads.

I've also been using uBlock Origin, but used a far easier method to block the Youtube pop-up, by making use of it's tools:
Just click on the flash or eyedropper icon and then select the pop-up in Youtube to temporarily or permanently remove it. Done.
The icons I'm referring to can be seen at 1:13 in the video OP linked, or in the attached image, in the lower left corner.

I use Librewolf (Firefox fork, I heard the method works the same on regular FF) and what I do is go to the uBlock settings -> Filter lists -> Purge all caches -> Update now. Worked every time so far and it's been a while since I got the nag screen.

Ha, YouTube does it right. By threatening users with ad blockers it raised awareness of their existence in the general public and the ad blocker installation numbers are rising significantly :))

I didn't even know this was happening. I use Ublock Origin with Firefox and can't remember the last time I saw an add on Youtube, probably around 2006-2008 (Adblock Plus back then). I don't allow either to update though, so I'm not sure if that has any affect. If they stop adblockers from working, I will resort to downloading the videos and watching them off Youtube. I already do that for age restricted videos because I don't want to log in to my account.

I unblocked in Chrome to get around the ban and navigate the site. Then I just watch anything I want in incognito. They can't block you if you are not signed in...yet

That probably won't change, too many sites use the embedded to have the video's on their page. How many recipe sites would break?

Brave browser still working for me. Had the complaints about adblocker, so disabled Ublock origin on YT. Works fine again - and still no ads. I've heard you can also create a new Brave profile and just use it for YT(can log in to YouTube) if you still get the warnings. Have not had to do that yet though, and watch a LOT of YT.

That's the wrong approach! You should NOT be manually adding random rules, all you need to do is keep your filters up-to-date (done by default, but you can still force update them).

In fact it's one of the things uBO specifically advises against in their megathread:

I've seen people suggesting I add specific filters, use a userscript or another extension. Is that safe?

  • No, it's not. Most of the suggested filters going around are very outdated, some were taken from our first threads.
  • Even fresh filters go outdated very quickly. If they work today, they might be the exact cause of the problem tomorrow.

Maintainers are very quick to update filters as YT makes any changes. You should not be messing around with these random rules, it will only cause problems...

I don't understand why it would cause problems, I have created my own rules for years with no issues. I currently have 236 and 67 of those are for Youtube. Or are they only talking about trying to block the video ads? I never had an issue with it not blocking ads, so I never tried to add any custom filters for that.

I block all the things they make pop up on the screen, the stupid boxes they put over the end of the video while it is still playing so you can't see the end of the video, the channel image that some creators put in the corner of the video, the title at the top that shows in full screen everytime you move the mouse or skip with the arrow keys, the live chat, the side bar, and probably some other things I forgot about.

For anyone that wants a really clean Youtube page, try these. I added a screenshot at the bottom. If it removes any elements you want, just remove them all and then add them in smaller chunks refreshing the page after each time until it removes that feature. Then remove that chunk and add those one at a time until you identify the exact one you don't want. Or you could just read through them since a lot of them are easily identifiable by the filter name.

yes, that megathread is specifically talking about YT adblocker detection, and any custom rules trying to deal with that.

...imo, you won't have any prob with YT.
(yes yes... you might never know, especially if Google is there around -lol- but i don't think YT will ever be serious about any effective long lasting block...)

i was using it, for free, blocking -for the most times- ads, since when Hurley was still there... lately started to feeling guilty towards some really good content creators, so began to pause uBO.
now signed for Premium and started giving something more by joining few channels and giving Thanks.

not free anymore, still a very, very good experience.

been using brave and ublock and luckily haven't gotten the warning from youtube yet. tried disabling brave shields and only using ublock to see if youtube would pick up on that, but everything was still normal. guessing my days are probably numbered until i have to implement one of these workarounds as i watch a lot of youtube.
if you wanna block youtube ads on mobile then use revanced. can also patch a ton of other apps too.

I believe they are doing A/B testing at the moment.
I use a few computers and browsers (well, not as many as it may sound, but more than 1: home, work, and travel basically), and even though they have the same anti-ad setup, Youtube blocked my videos in only one computer and browser (yet). And I just realized they lifted that block today - without me doing anything special, I had just switched to Freetube when the block occurred for the first time a few weeks ago.
If people react negatively enough, maybe they'll give up on that idea.

We can only hope, I heard rumours that the amount of people using AdBlock is on the rise because of the YouTube shenanigans.
Instead of it going down. And that before many people didn't even know what an AdBlock was and awareness is going more mainstream now.
No clue if any of it has any truth to it though.
