Since Halloween is only a couple of weeks away, I thought I'd ask what your favorite horror franchise is.

Enquiring minds want to know.

I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to horror games, but for some weird reason I LOVE horror at the same time, it's such a great genre when done good.

Movie-wise favourites:
Dirty pleasures: Wrong Turn, Resident Evil (though it's action mostly)
Real goodies: I really became enamoured with the Hellraiser franchise after reading The Scarlet Gospels and I really enjoyed the movies too. Gotta give chances for the other classic slashers ( Friday 13th is really up in my alley, Nightmare in Elm Street and Halloween are good picks likely)

Games:
Frankly I collected some of the better ones but yeah, I'm a chicken. Played through the mostly jumpscary action-shooter FEAR series.
And while not all series yet, I'm really looking forward playing Layers of Fear, Dead Space (I'll be a wreck) and Alien Isolation. And of couse, the Resident Evil games :)

Alien franchise, notably Alien, Aliens and Prometheus. I'm also one of those weird people who think Prometheus is amazing.

Kinda same, strong okay in my book. Looks amazing, is gorgeous, but... do I remember well that it was marketed as an Alien-prologue (or was it just the hype/press? Or just "in the Alien-universe"?) , then after having mixed reviews they kinda refuted the prequel-thing?
Movie was a bit weird because it was more of a thriller than horror, but then after Alien 1 the movies were more of a creepy-action ones, not really pure horror.
It surely had a weird and mixed reception, IMO it would have fared a lot better if it would have distanced itself from the Alien-series more. (and maybe just a bit better script. I have seriously hard time letting go how negligient and uncaring scientists are in Prometheus and Covenant)

Don't have any favourite franchises, so let's go with series by the same authors:
Movies: Guillermo del Toro's Spanish horrors (Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone), Roman Polanski's The Apartment Trilogy (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant)
Games: Rem Michalski's The Devil Came Through Here trilogy (The Cat Lady, Downfall, Lorelai). Oh, and Rusty Lake games, I guess.

Really. Well, more or less so: the wording on my part was definitely poor, I was simply naming the complete trilogy, but yeah, sure, I wouldn't put Lorelai among my all-time favourites, it's a bit too superficial. Still, I was indeed one of few Rem's fans who didn't hate the game.

I really like a bunch of them, but one that I feel needs more horror love is the SAW series. Now hear me out here, what bugs me is that most people just dismiss it as plain torture porn, but the way Tobin Bell (Jigsaw) carries the movies is incredible and there actually is plot beneath the death traps. I haven't actually seen that one prequel movie, granted, but I do enjoy the series immensely, got the DVDs, saw the 3D one at the movies, watched a Let's Play of the game (which explored the story of a character from the first movie(s) to a degree the movies themselves didn't get into, which was awesome).

Arguably the series' biggest twist is the very one that made the first entry so great, and especially the theme (Hello Zepp). I love the making of sections for the movies, both for the traps and other commentary.

And well anyways. I feel like people don't even give the psychological aspect of the series a chance because all they see is "crazy ways to make people kill one another or themselves", but it's so much moooore.

Games in general I'm a Project Zero/Fatal Frame fan, and anything japanese horror inspired really gives you the creeps honestly. It's a lot more subtle in most cases, because jumpscares aren't the only way to scare people XD Calling on Wii was also creepy but I think that was a solo thing, no franchise. Reminded me a bunch of Fatal Frame though XD

Or Resident Evil, the early days, before it became an action shooter with quick time events XD

Honestly I could probs talk about horror movies and games all day XD I wish I had a local horror buddy, but so far online buddies only DX

Well, obviously my favorite horror series is "Grez's Halloween 2019 Dungeon Adventure!" available now to November 1st, wherever spooky dungeons are sold! But, "I have no mouth, and I must scream" and System Shock series are certainly honourable mentions, especially since they're a lot easier to handle for a cowardly sort like myself!

And Ju-on the Grudge is my favourite horror movie since it's the only one to really freak me out. I'll never forgive the Japanese!

My favorite 'horror' movie is The Haunting because even after the movie ended you don't quite know if the house was actually haunted or if she was just crazy
So far, the scariest game for me is Outlast. Amnesia was probably scarier, but not as playable.

If we're talking franchises, I'll always have a soft spot for the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but I think the Conjuring universe is the best one around today.

Watch the movie Jacob's Ladder from the 80s, I really feel it was a major influence for Donnie Darko.

I've watched it. Good modern horror film. :)
I loved the part where his girl friend (Elizabeth Pena)'s face changes while they are arguing.

I was in college in the late 80's and loved watching those sort of trippy movies.

I used to be a huge horror fan in the '90s, then the genre got me a little bit bored..
I loved especially horror movies based on Earth without magical powers or phantoms or whatever else, like psychological horrors and similar things, but I also liked pure sci-fi horror movies that didn't involve as I said werewolves or whatever else but like, aliens, outer space and so on..
Here in Italy we have also had many great horror film directors back then, so I enjoyed them a lot although I'm really no more up-to-date about the new releases =P

I'm always extremely happy when someone appreciates or even loves Italian movies, I think that we had so many great directors and actors (well, there are also lots of extremely famous American actors with a clear Italian surname.. and attitude =P not to talk about Tarantino and other directors too), Bava was for sure one of the greatest ones especially in the horror genre =)

Don't get me started:)
I agree - Italian cinema is extraordinary. If I'm being honest, I actually prefer Italian new wave directors to the French and I doubt many people now understand what a huge debt modern movies owe to their innovations. Though I haven't seen all of their movies, Antonioni, De Sica and Visconti have made some of my favorites. In fact, I will probably watch L'Eclisse, since I have not seen that one yet and managed to record a nice copy from TCM. And then, of course, spaghetti westerns! Just love that genre - not just Leone but Corbucci movies are terrific and I thoroughly enjoy all the Terrence Hill/Bud Spencer comedies as well, silly as they are. I'll just stop now - I could run on and on.

thanks a lot for sharing all your knowledge! even if I was born in Italy I think I don't have such knowledge about our best cinema =P although I've been lucky enough to get exposed in the '90s to all the best Italian movies, I loved spaghetti western and when I got a little bit more mature I enjoyed so much Neorealismo.. and of course I started watching Italian giallo and horror maestri too! i'm really happy that our cinema is well known and regarded all over the world, since it seems that even here in Italy nowadays everyone focuses only on Hollywood and superheroes movies =P

Definitely Romero classics, my top 3 would be:

Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Day of the Dead (1985)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Not a Romero film but The Return of the Living Dead (1985) is great and Zombie aka Zombi 2 (1979) is good. Kind of what Dead Island was loosely based on.

Honorable mention to the Phantasm series, the first 2 films are top tier despite some very cheesy special effects. The Tall Man is an underrated villain imo and the series has some really great music.

If I had to pick only one horror francise, it would be silent hill. Way scarier than resident evil. But RE is also special for me, being the first PS game I ever played and I still enjoy it from time to time. I also had a good time playing Parasite Eve.
For movie franchises, Hellraiser hands down!
