So like the past week my internet has been acting weird.
I've noticed just random spikes all the time now. I can see it in my ping when playing Overwatch.

When I reset my modem, the spikes go away and it's fine for 2 or so hours, but then it will spike again. Not really sure how to solve it.

Any suggestions on what the problem is and how I can fix it?

THANKS IN ADVANCE. <3

Some stuff of maybe importance.

  1. My PC is wired, not wireless.
  2. I even turned off wireless on my modem and was still lagging. (So it shouldn't be one someone using my internet without me knowing?)

I had a similar problem last summer, and, as others have said, it was the modem itself. Mine wasn't overheating, but it was going bad.

Funny thing was, I thought it was the connection, but since it was intermittent, it would read fine when a tech came out to check it. The last tech to come out told me there was a new modem model available, replaced the old modem with a new one, and it's been fine ever since.

Overheat?

Question, is your area in a hot area or really dusty?

If the modem is in a confined, warm, and/or dusty area, the heat can mess with it depending on how warm the modem typically goes.

Could also be poor signal strength coming to your modem if they did anything to your lines recently or anything.

Could also be the modem itself dying in general as in components inside of it going out and the errors they generate pile up as the device runs longer

If you are lucky, it could be a corrupted firmware on it and can be updated but not sure how to do that for you as that depends on the modem.

Probably speed issues, if you are starting to lag.

Better contact your ISP about it, since you are supposed to have constant Internet speed at the top.

...Or you can use the alternative solution xP

UPDATE?

I don't think it is a hate issue. It has LOTS of breathing room, it's literally out in the open.
And it shouldn't be dying I've only owned it for about a year.

I looked it up and apparently netgear had a weird update that isn't working well with Time Warner some how.

So I guess I will contact Time Warner. Although I always seem to get people who often know nothing about tech. Hopefully doesn't happen... lol.

Thanks for all the advice.

your wireless internet should be password protected so dont worry about someone using it, plus if you go at the modem settings there must be a history of devices that have used it so you can check, First you should contact your internet provider as many proposed most of times its their fault hehe

Try disconnecting your wifi cord (if you have wifi in the house) and check your local speed test from your ISP.. If you are getting the amount you're paying for in MBs/D then it's prolly someone is heavy on the wifi browsing. Anywho other options are;

  1. New cord
    2, New modem
  2. Check the connection to your cable at both ends (modem / PC) - Sometimes the slot from the mobo fucks up (Happened to me once)
  3. Check that you have no-internet heavy programs are running while playing games.

like already suggested: basiclly try to find the reason.
take the computer to a friend for a while. play there (if you can)
if all works, it's the ISP or modem.

replace the cable
get another router from a friend for a day.
if all else fails, it's the modem in the computer, but a new one (if it's onboard one i would suggest to disable it, just to make sure nothing else is getting damaged).

furthermore, from my experience, when one component dies, the PSU is usually the reason. true, most times it's the RAM or cpu that goes first, but you never know... anyway, just check it ;)

good luck

Your modem is the issue. Try connecting the cable to some other pc you have. I am guessing you have a broadband connection?
