I can't say for sure without looking at running animations from a crap load of games, but I do like chunky little Mario's running in Mario 64. =P

How to Survive. The character constantly looks around for dangers while moving and when you do an instant kill, it sometimes transitions seamlessly.

Well, while it's something I appreciate this isn't really something where I can say I have a "favorite." First thing that comes to mind is that Veigar from League of Legends has a pretty great one though.

My personal favourites are Prince of Persia and Flashback (originals, not remakes) - I love the rotoscoped feel of it. From the newer games, the last time I was amazed by animation was in Left 4 Dead.

Also, mentioning Assassin's Creed series in the original post reminded me of that one time I was playing AC and my mom, watching me for a bit, said that Altaïr walked "like a girl" :D
