I've played Borderlands 2 for a bit (one normal playthrough with one class, halfway through new game + with another) and I had fun with it even if I'm not good at shooters because the game is crazy, colorful and over the top enough to keep it interesting. One of the DLCs is you storming a castle in a meta-rpg adventure, that alone is a few hours of fun.
Especially if you have a friend who will run the campaign with you, I think it's worth the price. I'm pretty sure the GOTY goes down to ten dollars often enough.

Playing solo right now, and I'm loving it so far.
I love its dark humour, I love most of its cast, and its soundtrack is pretty cool as well.
Let's not forget about all the sweet loot.
You should probably watch some videos and see if you like it.

You need to see the world with the eyes of the world, if you look at statistics of the most played games on steam, borderlands 2 is still in the top list, meaning that the world is enjoying playing that game, the game offer enjoyment to the world so why not on you. Some games get hype because they deserve it, some other get hype by marketing (watch_dogs).

According to steam, I played 99 hours of Borderlands 2 and … 27 minutes of Borderlands 1?!? … Wait! What? That ain't right!!!
Oh, yeah …
Kinda forgot I played first game mostly off-line with roommate's copy cuz it was before "family-sharing" was an option.
Overall, I did't find the 2nd game storyline as memorable as the first, … but some Handsome Jack's monologues were hilarious!

Bought the GOTY on Humble Bundle Store for 6,49€ just recently. I'm still looking for people to play it with.
I was told, that not playing it in coop is a waste of time...

Borderlands 2 is an OK game, and probably worth whatever the asking price is by now. However, the original game was better than the sequel in pretty much every way. The tl;dr of everything is that the entire game was dumbed down to make it more "accessible" (read: casual oriented). Item drops, classes, etc. There are a few things that are cool (the melee build in BL2 for example is much more fun to play than the first), but all in all they do not make the game better than its predecessor.
IMO, get BL1 GotY, then maybe play BL2 but prepare to be comparatively disappointed. I had fun with BL2, but nowhere near the hundreds of hours of fun I had with the original.

One of the best games I've ever played. Check out my hours.

BL2 is one of the best games ever. The way it fuses action/ fps with RPG elements makes it very engaging, and the dialogue is really funny. If you are very competitive, than this may not be the right game for you, but it is really fun, and has a ton of replay value. Buy the GOTY edition, because each DLC is like an entire movie, and and the ultimate / true vault hunter upgrades make it so that the game gets progressively more difficult, forcing you to develop a style of play, and execute it effectively. I play all the time w/ my gf co-op, it was fun enough to reel her in as well.
