Installing Windows 10 right now.

People often ask me how Windows 10 is so far.

I always give the same answer. "It can't get worse than Windows 8.1 or insider preview"

But you are not forced to use its apps, and the Start Screen has all the same functionality that W7's Start Menu had. Just press de Windows key and start typing. Also it has better power user tools, boots A LOT faster, etc

I just feel it was never intented for desktop.
It looks nice on a touch screen but really weird and counter-intuitive in anything mouse driven, and just plain awful with a touchpad.

What's weird? to click on tiles instead of icons? I really don't get it, it was kinda weird with the Metro apps, but if you don't like them there's no need to use them at all, and in the worst of cases you could just pay $10 or download a free start menu changer and you could have your oldie menu with all the Win8 advantages

The thing is, I was happy with win 7(and still am) so I decided to wait for the next one. The next one is now here, so I just have to wait a few months for feedback and then make the jump.

That's weird, maybe you updated instead of doing a clean install, as Win8 boots and shutdowns way faster than all the previous versions

Did you use Windows 7? Yes? Then go ahead, install it again and compare.

Most of the people hate Windows 8 only because of that awful Metro UI. You know that first impression is the most important one, and you're welcomed with giant rectangles, which microsoft calls "intuitive".

Windows 8 is utter crap and a total regression and degradation compared to Windows 7. Microsoft accepted too many decisions, tried to make people dumber than they actually are by releasing a OS that tries to be so easy and smart that it makes me sick.

Of course, I'm not that crazy to start world war due to shitty metro UI, but Win8 is one of the worst releases, in top 3 with Millenium and Vista. Windows 10 is what Windows 8 should be from the beginning, it has a chance to fix all my bad feelings, as microsoft seems to learned a lesson.

Vista and ME performed horribly, while Win8 perfoms great. Also the "metro UI" (which I love its design) can be used basically in the same way that you used the start menu in Win7/Vista.

I have used 7 a lot of times after (and before) using 8 and I feel the start menu looks boring and outdated.

No need to use shell, just remove them from your start menu (right click on them), and then you can shrink menu same as you'd shrink a window.

some people so quickly forgot the horror Vista was ;p 8.1 was not a good system but was not a terrible system as well. Compare it to mentioned Vista or Me ;p

It wasn't the worst, I agree, but it wasn't that good either. I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7 with very positive feelings (after a short journey with Vista), then I switched to Windows 8 and 8.1 later. Windows 8 was a disaster, 8.1 made it at least a little better, and now I switched to Windows 10, again, with very positive feelings.

From my whole Windows journey which begun with MS-DOS 3.11, through Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, 7, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 IP and 10. I consider ME, Vista and 8 the worst, with no particular order.

Win2K, it's the fundamental brick of XP, it was released mostly for servers (then renamed to Server + year). Including win2K, would be like including server 2003/2008/2012. Out of those, Server 2012 is really crap, yes, mostly for Metro UI

Using 2012 at one of our test web servers, and it's not so bad too

At least in my case, win2012 is not intuitive at all, I just want to go to manage my server an publish a damn site, that should take 3 click, at most, win server 2012 makes you go to 4 different places, before being able to manage your IIS.
They tried to reinvent something that was working perfectly fine in win server 2008

1 + win 8 has better overall performance than win 7, as far as I know
2 + win 8 has much better info and features on Taskmanager and when transferring files
3 + win 8 manages resources better, as far as I know
4 + win 8 boots faster, though due to tricks
5 + win 8 has a lovely GUI (not talking about metro lol), whereas win 7 still has that ugly soap shaped vista gui
6 + win 8 has a lovely ...what's called... when you press "windows"+L (no troll)
7 / win 8 has metro and "apps", you don't need to use any of these at all so np here
8 + 8 sounds better and is easier to pronounce than 7
9 / win 8 has touchscreen if you wanna, though the screen will get all ugly and bleh, not that I have one though
10 - win 8 has meh reputation 'cause 7 is good and 'cause tabletified & phone-ified 1st impression

99 + win 7 has start button (I adapted and have my own system, start button is almost useless for me as I knew it)
98 - win 7 has an ugly GUI, win 2k looks much nicer :D
97 + win 7 has great reputation and was great after vista

= both are good, 8.1 is a bit better than 7

dogmeat agrees

what did I forget?

I did.. multiple distributions.. and linux still sucks imo

EDIT: With "sucks" I mean, that I prefer windows over linux for several reasons. I just really fed up with the linux fanboys always telling how much better it is and how much I need linux and all the super fancy smancy editors and stuff. For like ten years they keep saying "one day linux will take over" "one day you will regret it"..just like the OpenGL guys about DirectX. No it won't. Simply because Microsoft has the monopoly and this won't change in the near future.

EDIT2: Sorry for being so emotional but I hear this stuff like every day from my fellow students.

I'm far from being a fanboy, indeed, I hate them as much as you. I use both, linux and windows, I prefer linus, simply because is more stable (from my point of view, and in my own personal experience). I can leave the linux machine with out restarting, for months, with no decay in performance, I can't do that in my win7 machine, though, it has 3x rams, and and much better processor (i7 vs core 2 duo).
I'm also tired of win fanboys, that think in Linux you download and compile every single application you want to install, or the only thing you have is the shell.

PS: Some day Linux will rule the world, and that day skynet will win.

Since I'm mostly gaming.. I'm just using OS that's giving me best performance. Which means i'm using OSX ofc :D
When, that new OpenGL comes, can't remember the name, that Valve and many other companies are working for, I'll gladly switch back to Linux.

I would have stuck with 7 if I could. But I bought a new laptop that came default with windows 8.1 installed. And I didn't want to pay extra just to go back a generation of windows. So in the end I stuck with Win8 and it was a horrible experience!

I installed Windows 10 the day it came out, I've been told some horror stories they have read on the net and all this other stuff of why people are hating on it, I used 7 and 8.1 for a year+ each and so far I'm loving windows 10. I haven't had ANY issues installing it, running it, or playing games on it. In fact, I'm finding it it running better than 7/8.1 and my game so far are all running as good or better as well.

Some thing are differently placed around the UI and there are some small things from 7 I miss, but I have left feedback about adding options for those things. Other than that, I'm getting used to the new UI and placement pretty fast.

You know, I thought that people on the internet would tend to argue more about religion and politics, or even game comparisons than anything else.

Reading this thread and other discussions on the internet about Windows 10, I realize that people argue a lot about "which OS is better", and I barely ever see anyone arguing about religions/politics anymore. Times change, I guess?
Anyways, we all have different tastes and opinions. Not everyone enjoy Windows 10 more than 8 or 7, and vice-versa, and some people even feel more comfortable with Linux and Mac. Remember, what you believe is best is only your personal opinion. :P

As for me, I'm still not sure about Windows 10. For now, I like my Windows 7, and I see no good reason to upgrade at the moment. Eventually, maybe.
