As a huge DOOM fan I am curious what the steam gifts community thinks about the new DOOM based off of gameplay trailers and multilayer trailers. And also what the thoughts are about the $40 season pass for multilayer. I have the collectors edition preordered for Xbox one and I am super excited. I would love to hear your thoughts.

i want to believe so hard it will be an old-school shooter that feels like quake 2/3; hell i'd even go buy the game if it was similar to doom 1-3; but it will probably be overhyped and mediocre.
I hope shadow warrior 2 launches soon, after playing shadow warrior 1 and wolfenstein i remember how much i enjoy these types of shooter.

Bigger fan of Quake 2 myself,

Who who owned that game didn't love the Q2DM1 stage for death match?

Edit: And Unreal 2004 Onslaught.

Quake 2 was great too. There are actually multiple remakes of Q2DM1 in Quake 3. It was often played in competitive games. It's indeed an awesome map :)

Q2DM1 was my favorite for group death match while the space jump was my favorite for 1v1 death match.

Had one friend none of us could beat, he was one of the highest ranked clan players on the east coast. Playing against that man just wasn't fair.

It's been like 15 years since I last played Q2. The mods were great. I rememmber playing lithium ctf and action quake a lot.

It'll be a generic, MP-oriented modern cover-based shooter that happens to have Doom-like enemies in it. The question is that how fast will it be forgotten compared to Doom3 and Quake 4. (Although levels of obscurity compared to the latter would be impossible. Seriously, I know people around me who played Quake 1 and Q3A to death but never even heard about a Q4 even existing… Heck, even I didn't know about it until 2013…)

I have to admit: I never played it. Never liked Quake in general. Q1 was fine; Q2 was an absolute travesty of a train wreck that held the largest amount of release bugs for a time (and the patches were even worse, you could only patch from a specific version to a specific version, so when I once had to install a retail copy for a friend, I had to install almost a dozen patches, one by one, afterwards…); and Q3… well, I was an UT guy. Still am. Never liked DM, and the entire Q3 was built around it, opposed to the team-based approach of UT.

From what I have seen there is no cover system, you get health and ammo pick ups or you die and have no ammo

Well, in that case replace "generic, MP-oriented modern cover-based shooter" to "old-school, MP-oriented shooter".

I wouldn't say MP oriented. They are marketing MP to people who buy games for that first. I believe they made story first then made MP. Most people I have talked to want doom for story not MP.

Yep, Doom was the SP franchise and Quake went into the MP orientation, but thus far Bethesda only seems to talk about MP; even the beta is focusing strictly on MP matches, most likely for the usual balancing tests.
Although for SP I'm curious what will be the content. Doom 3 bled out because there was no real content, just one SP campaign and one expansion disk, whereas Doom 1/2 are still flourishing because of WADs created even today. And with Bethesda at the helm, we can get both full mod/community level support or full money-milking paid DLC/community levels madness.

Snap map seems like it could keep single player and life to the game with the ability to make your own maps and modes. I am hoping single player is great and I am sure it will be. Time will tell.

I really enjoyed Doom 3 BFG but that was because of the single player. I am assuming the new one is multiplayer based and this does not please me.

It has single player that looks cool but all the multiplayer marketing is making me think the single player is going to suck.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah I saw some of the single player but what with everyone talking about the multiplayer, its definitely going to be multiplayer oriented and that is just very annoying

Permalink

Which is funny because it doesn't seem like most people(from what I've seen) want this game for multiplayer...

Permalink

That's understandable since A LOT of the recent games (not naming any cough Star Wars cough) for multiplayer have been incredibly terrible lately.

I think they are pushing MP because it will bring in people who want that in a game. Wolfenstien was really good and the standalone was good as well, but some people I'm sure we're put off by no MP in a shooter. I don't think a shooter has to have MP but it does add some more life to the game however long people play it. That's why people still play the old cods even though there are newer ones out, the MP keep them alive.

Comment has been collapsed.

That's true, and I totally am fine with multiplayer being in the game its just I really don't want to see them pull off the same thing that happened in Star Wars Battlefront where the single player was basically nothing and it was basically multiplayer centered.

You start out with classes on this one which takes away map control for MP. Meh.

Super hyped here. Looks like a fluid, fun, crazy, badass FPS. Don't really see how it's "generic", and it looks new and improved from the older, rather dated, games. So I don't get the negativity really. But then again, I'm a huge multiplayer FPS fan, who loves COD, Battlefield and all the rest, so I wouldn't, would I? xD

Nothing wrong with liking MP FPS, I like playing them when I feel like it. Such as killing floor, tf2, l4d2, battlefield etc

Excited, but I hope they didn't f*** up single player and cut it short. I don't care about multiplayer.

Trailers I've seen so far are too heavily edited to be really meaningful.

Only undoctored gameplay footage I've seen hints that you'll not see more than 3 enemies on screen at once. At least level design looks more open and less setpiece-to-setpiece oriented than what's nowadays common.

Multiplayer looks like it'll be Quake III Arena with a graphics upgrade again, looks like for that I'll be sticking to new Unreal Tournament instead.

"huge DOOM fan" "I have preordered for Xbox one"
No offense but I dont understand how can a huge fan play this game with controller....

Comment has been collapsed.

My computer had troubles running the alpha and beta tests, so I wanted to get it on something where I wouldn't have to worry about having issues related to graphic settings. I am a huge fan, I played Doom 95 back in the day and the ones that followed both on pc and console. And you can be a huge fan and play with controller, the difference between mouse and keyboard and controller is strickly preference, yes mouse and keyboard is faster and more responsive but by no means makes you less of a fan based on your preference.

This... so much this! FPS's are made to be played WITH A MOUSE! No hardcore Quake / Doom / id software can seriously say with a straight face that he loves to play them.... with thumbsticks.... and auto aim.... on a console.

No... just no!

Played beta, MP is utter consolised shit. Imagine Quake 3, but like three times slower and on crappy maps. Transformation to Revenant doesn't change gameplay at all, you're just spilling one-shot-kill rockets with AoE damage - no need to even aim. Guns are made from plastic, judging by how they sound and their physics, and I'm afraid that it'll stay that crappy in singleplayer, too

Cash grab.

But honestly, it's almost impossible for them to make a satisfactory Doom game. They knew it and just made a cash grab game that looks good, but actually isn't good.

I give it 3 months, then everyone will forget about it and call it a gigantic failure.

how can an ip so unknown by new people on the media be a cash grab?

There are people over the age of 15 on the internet. And I don't know anyone that uses Steam, buys games but doesn't know Doom. Only the news on various Facebook pages and gaming websites is more than enough for it to be a successful cash grab.
