I know you can do L4D campaigns in L4D2,
but do you need to actually own L4D to be able to do that?

well, there is not MUCH reasons to do so, but L4D1 survival maps are MUCH better than L4D2 ones.

If u like that mode, i suggest u to get both.

Btw, there is no good players for survival on L4D2, and there is awesome players for survival on L4D1 XD

I enjoyed both. If you don't have either, get them and play L4D1 first then L4D2. You'll probably enjoy it better that way.

No, you don't have to own L4D1 in order to play its maps in L4D2.

l4d1 is way better imo...

l4d2 is full of lame kids

Both games are fantastic, but since nearly all of L4D's content was ported over to the sequel, there really isn't much reason to purchase the original.

well it is the only way to play without stupid l4d2 monsters and there is maybe small but more "adult" community, also without melee weapons, there is less hollywood-rush-with-katana style

You get all L4D1 content in L4D2, including campaigns, special zombies and playable characters from the first game. Only difference is that L4D2's special infected (spitter and maybe hunter, not sure which) will be present in the campaign missions from L4D1.

If you play Garry Mod, get L4D1+L4D2. Having only L4D2 won't allow you to use L4D1 props or character models (bill, zoey, francis, louis) in the editor.

tl;dr - if you just want to play, don't bother with L4D1, everything is ported. for gmod, get both games.

This.

Actually, the first one isn't bad at all, but I primarily bought it for more stuff for Garry's Mod. :)

Valve killed L4D1 and the community is much smaller. Just get the sequel. They ported the maps from L4D1 into L4D2

The L4D1 community isn't very good... but it is still a good game, and very fun if you find serious people to play it with. The lack of certain types of special infected makes it a different game from L4D2.

Unless you don't like the new weapons and new special infected, not really.

I arguably enjoyed L4D1 more than L4D2.
