So amazon has just launched a new thingie clled AmazonSmile where 0,5% of your expenses with them are sent to a charity of your choice. Seems like a nice thing and if you are a regular costumer this costs nothing to you and you might help people.

Here's the FaQ

The link does not work, just go here http://smile.amazon.com/

Nice find, made my choice. Even though I primarily buy via co.uk, I do get some goods (digital and physical) from .com.

Thanks for the info, I locked in Child's Play for my charity. It is always nice to have a chunk of money you were already spending to towards a charity.

Is it smart to buy digital stuff from .com if u're not from the US? I thought i read on their site it's US only..

I'm sure plenty of non-US residents had no problems buying digital games on Amazon

Yea, you just have to give the address of a US starbucks or something and there you go :P

Huh, nice, I don't buy from Amazon too often, but I'll definitely keep this in mind when I do.

0.5%? Not to be picky but thats sorta really really low, I mean I am still gonna do it but even 1% might have looked better for them.

Just my 2 cents, no literally probably 2 cents unless I purchase something big :-P!

It's true it's a risible amount. But better than nothing.

Well 0.5% sure looks like nothing, but let's not forget how many people shop at amazon.com every single day.

I can imagine those 0.5% could make tens of thousands a day.

Not a huge surprise that it is that low, considering they won't even let most cashback sites do anything and when they do, it is only for very specific items. I also noticed it is now $35 for super saver shipping. Looks like that happened two weeks ago. I am saving my second free prime membership for the holidays, so at least I will have that if I decide to buy anything.

All of that, plus I pay tax, makes them an average place to me. These days I have been buying less from them, unless I see a major sale. I can get cashback, coupons, and no tax from a lot of other places. I would have to say 0.5% to charity isn't really going to make me want to use them more. A nice thing, perhaps, but they could have done a little better.

Well, but if you look at it from another perspective, amazon online reported sales of 2 billion in the last quarter.
If 0.5% from that would go to charity ( atm it obviously doesn't ) that would be 10,000,000 dollars.

I was going to add this to my thread last night, but I wasn't sure if it would be considered a ref link or not. I sent in a ticket.

there's no such thing as Amazon referral links, removing the ref part would not change a thing but OP would not gain anything at all from keeping it.

Yes there is, they come marked by the "tag=xxxx" thingie

You misunderstand me. Because some entity is gaining money, this could be considered a referral link. In addition, referral links do exist on Amazon. As MrC says, the /tag thing is a referral.

At any rate, I just got a reply from support saying that they will make an exception for the Amazon smile program, so it looks like I'm free to link it.

my apology, I didn't know about the tag before. Will be more careful when I use Amazon links on SG forum in the future.

here is everything you need to know on amazon referral links, in a handy-dandy guide I wrote up almost a year ago (it got closed at some point, but the info's still good). They do their referral links a bit weird so it can confuse people, hence why I keep this link on hand.

I did not even thought of the possibility of this being a referral program as you get to choose who you want your money to be destined to. Well, good to know.

Yeah, based on the reply I got from support, it seems that they do consider this a referral, but it will be an exception.

I'd rather take it as cashback :D

Thought I only use co.uk, since I live in Europe. (expect games)

I spent shitload of money for Amazon sales like I did with Steam sales. (mostly because I have a prime membership)

Seriously, I do not know other sites where I can get Doctor Who merchandises, cheap Portal stuffs, decent and discounted engineering textbooks, and sometimes snacks in large quantity for a really cheap price

so yeah, kinda nice when they do this.
