you can update your copy at square enix.com instead of buying it all again

Simply buying it while having the original applies a discount, I think. You can't update your copy for free.

The only thing that changes is that the graphics look a little bit nicer and the boss fights get somewhat more complex. If all you want is the 'new game +' feature I suggest you simply install the debug menu mod on your old version instead.
