Hey,

am I really? I have felt the following points to be extremely disappointing:

  • Poor PC port/optimization
  • Mr. X being extremely annoying as you cannot simply escape through 1 door like before.
  • Crane fight is buggy.
  • Too many ammunition laying around.
  • Evading enemies has been made harder in favor of shooting them.
  • Game controls feel awkward.
  • And the camera gets stuck very often.
  • 60 bucks for 9 hours of gameplay to 100% the game.
  • Normally, Claire B was the hardest in the Original, yet Claire B in the Remake is way easier than Leon A.
  • No printer cartridges!
  • Neither spiders, super lickers nor crows!
  • I have gained an S rank with a playtime of 2:30 in Claire B easily on my first try.
  • No quick turn.
  • No reloading by combining ammo with weapons in the inventory.
  • And so much more.

I really cannot believe that this game is "Overwhelmingly positive" on Steam since it has so much flaws to me. Am I simply too much of a fan of the original so that I'm disappointed?

Thanks!

Game controls feel awkward.

Too many people have claimed that as a positive point for old-school survival horror games for anyone to bother fixing it by now, especially when it's a large corporation looking to cut corners and save money.

Too many people have claimed that as a positive point for old-school survival horror games

That would be the mantra of the Resident Evil 4 fans (specifically, the subset who actively excuses- and even praises- the gameplay mechanics, despite how mismatched the old "tank" controls were with the game's swarm-based, action-heavy gameplay). It's entirely possible that there is something wrong with their heads, of course. :P

I recall that back when the original games were new, that my friends at the time and I ended up criticizing the movement to start with, along with how predictable and generic their horror design was (mind you, our group was well familiar with horror films of the sort, and the concept of [avoiding or being self-aware about catering to] tropes was a bit less established back then).

Of course, we didn't mind those things. Rather, we enjoyed the crap out of the games for their solid puzzle mechanics [weirdly enough, trying to complete puzzles while evading zombies was a satisfying, rather than frustrating, experience] and the excellent horror-survival tension that came with having limited ammo, along with the then-normal (ie, pre-Halo) need for health management and limited damage output. In short, it was a fun puzzle game with excellent tension and atmosphere, that still captured the charm of FPS games of the era, and solidly laid the foundation for the survival horror genre.

Nevermind that, no matter how familiar we were with the genre, it was still pretty being able to play a zombie game back then. ..as opposed to now, where even diehard zombie fans such as myself have to cringe at the mention of the genre, given the volume of the trashware that dominates it. Well, it's not like "survival" is a term that has fared any better..

But yeah, the mechanics were something we excused, in favor of the game. By the sounds of the OP's points, they completely stripped everything distinct about the classic games in order to bring them more in line to modern norms, while still re-expressing the elements that we once excused, but with them now implemented in a way that no longer works to aid the game design [ie, in giving puzzles their distinct feel].

Sounds like it may be a hot mess as far as a remake goes, regardless of if it can be enjoyed on its own merits or not. :X

I haven't bought the game but I did try the demo they put up earlier this month and I was actually surprised at how well it ran on my aging PC. Is the performance in the final release worse?

Why quick turn when your mouse can turn much faster?

I haven't played either game, but it baffles me that anyone would pay $60 for a remake. I could see maybe paying $20 if it was something I was really interested in.

$60 is for a console games tax. Why are PC users paying extra?
$20 is for HD ports of old games, which I am all for. Yakuza Kiwami for $20. Hell yeah.

You said it, it's not a 'remaster' it's a full-fledged remake, which means they rebuilt it from scratch in RE 7 engine. I guess you agree that effort needed to port something and to redo it are completely different.

I think $60 is too much for almost any game. Maybe if it's a massive game that tons of work went into to make and you can spend 60-100 hours or more in a single playthrough might be worth it, but for something like this, I just don't get it. The engine was already made for another game and everything about game was already done, they just had to recreate the game in the new engine. I'm sure that is still a decent amount of work, but $60 for a remade game that probably takes 8-10 hours to complete? Even if the game was brand new in a new engine, that would be a lot of money for such a short game.

I mean, all it takes is the willingness to relocate to a deserted island.
Alternatively, they can rename themselves Neo and start consuming random pills, but that seems as though it'd be even less advisable than the first option.

Yes the $60 price tag was an immediate disappointment and a nonstarter.

Poor PC port/optimization

I don't agree, runs well on my aging PC, optimization isn't the best i've ever seen, but better than in most of AAA games, especially when comparing it with Ubisoft titles.

Too many ammunition laying around.

Too many? IMHO ammo is scarce and you have to waste at least 5 bullets to knock down a zombie.

Evading enemies has been made harder in favor of shooting them.

I don't think so, i prefer evading them (because, again ammo is scarce and better leave them for boss fight) and I don't think it's became harder.

Game controls feel awkward.

Don't quite agree. Plays nice.

And the camera gets stuck very often.

Haven't seen anything like that.

60 bucks for 9 hours of gameplay to 100% the game.

Afaik there are 4 campaigns, each take approximately 10h, so 40h of gameplay in total. But yeah, generally i agree, the price should be lower. I also don't get why they've increased the price for Israel and Turkey, i mean shouldn't the price for these countries be as low as for Russians?

No quick turn.

Did you try to press 'Q'?

After playing the demo I felt that it was too easy, had no horror feel at all, and the amounts of health/ammo you got seemed crazy. The full version solved all those issues for me though. It seems "just right" imho.

I really disagree with your view on Mr. X too. I think the way they added him makes the game feel very different and forces you into situations that you wouldn't ever do without him. Not being able to just walk through a door to escape means you have to use the entire map to evade - that's probably my favourite thing about this new game over all.

I think the only one of your points I agree with is the price. The price of something like this should be set in relation to how long it takes to do one play-through. Sure, there's alternate campaigns but it's all sort of the same. 40 bucks would have been more fitting I feel.

"No quick turn." they probably chose to not put it, as it was introduced in RE3., but that's just me imagining things.

I could check it out i still have a copy RE2 on ps1 and i know there was quick turn in RE2 for N64 i bought it for 100$ the day it came out and just saying i was one of the first to RE1 back in Jan. 1996 this game started a revolution survival horror was born.

I remember reading that it was a new feature from 3 in the guide from a magazine back then. anyway, it's quite bad that they didn't put it considering the camera can be more restrictive than that of the ps1 games in some cases.

Tried the demo last night , i got quick turn enabled with my bloody6 V.3 mouse , i can do that in any 3d fps game ,
the game just came out and will get updates , give it a chance i am happy they remade this one, it was my fav resident evil, its short maybe but the original was also short compared to the other RE games (I think my record was 40 mins with Leon) in the original you played as Leon or Claire and overwrite the previous end game save to unlock shit. And those complaining about the price i paid 100$ for RE1 and RE2 when they came out back in 1996-1998 including taxes and bought RE2 again on N64 for 100$ in 1999.

Poor PC port/optimization

I've only played the demo, but my 6 years old CPU and 4 years old GPU could run it full at settings (except texture quality, because of only 4 GB of vram) at constant 60 fps. I was quite impressed by the performance, quite better than RE7.

Too many ammunition laying around.
[...]
No printer cartridges!
[...]
I have gained an S rank with a playtime of 2:30 in Claire B easily on my first try.

So you played on an easy difficulty level and complain that the game is too easy and lacks features only available in higher difficulties? Play in hardcore and these 3 negatives will not exist anymore.

No reloading by combining ammo with weapons in the inventory.

Isn't that a good thing? I've always felt that being able to reload in the inventory to skip reload animation was a broken feature of RE games.

While the RE1 Remake was widely accepted by the gaming community, I guess making this one was a step too far (since they upset the purists like you who enjoyed the originals more) -- too much has been altered already.
I hope they do not make a mess out of the possible RE3 Remake, LOL!!

Poor PC port/optimization

Wat. After MGS V, this is one of the most optimized PC games in the last 5-6 years. Seriously, ignore the store page sys requirements, you can run this on a toaster (granted with some visual setbacks). I can run it with everything on high but even with all on low, it's nothing short of gorgeous.

Crane fight is buggy.

Hm, had zero issues with that fight but maybe that's just me.

Too many ammunition laying around.

Right now, I'm playing Leon B scenario and I have to say, I really have to count my bullets in this run.

60 bucks for 9 hours of gameplay to 100% the game.

Four campaigns (Leon A, Leon B, Claire A and Claire B + a bonus Hunk one) seems like a pretty good deal for 47$ to me (got in on GMG).

No printer cartridges!

They are there in Hardcore mode.

I have gained an S rank with a playtime of 2:30 in Claire B easily on my first try.

Now, this last bit is something that I have a really hard time believing in. It is just hard to imagine an S rank could be gotten that easily on a first try by someone who couldn't discover quick turn controls (they are in the game btw) and save ink ribbons.
