I meant to post this yesterday, but forgot.

I just got one on Kijiji. Glad I finally got around to it. I'm somewhat surprised though, considering the app isn't that widely available (my TV is reasonably new but still too old for it). I wonder if they just weren't doing well enough? I probably would have gotten one sooner if I'd known about it.

I just got one on ebay sent to Oz when they first came out. You can probably still grab one from there or other places. My TV doesn't have a PC mode for HDMI so the link looks better than just a cable. I'd prefer just a cable on a decent TV though.

What bugged me is that even if you have someone that can receive it in the US or another place that it is sold, you still can't buy it.

Eh, I like my steamlink but I'm not sad it's discontinued. It's simply a device with not enough market share to sustain it. Most people who have wifi networks fast enough to support it, or pull cat6 to the tv, already have tech enough to do the job in other ways. Like an actual HDMI cable to the TV, or a computer at the TV or an old laptop they can put there and use in-home streaming with... with way better quality than the steamlinks hardware can manage. Or they have dual/triple monitor setups or 4K monitors or such that simply makes gaming on the TV feel awkward and low resolution so it becomes a rare thing.

I use it a couple of times a year when friends come over and we play silly party games on it - but before I had it we did the same thing, I just had to plug a cable in. I'm happy I got it, on sale, shipping costing way more than the device - but yeah not sad to see it go. More happy that they are moving forward and excited to see what the future holds in this space.

Having steam link as an app on a smart TV sounds about right for what it is, and also gives more room for them to update it without being limited with the hardware they decided on so many years ago. That's probably a good thing. I also enjoy playing the occasional steam game on my cheap android tablet - that works surprisingly well. And it doesn't force me to only use it at the TV.

I have Ethernet to the TV, but I'm not about to run an HDMI cable across the house, and don't have a spare computer or laptop to park by the TV - nevermind that a computer is far louder, more power hungry, and using a connected to the TV is far more cumbersome than turning on a controller, having the Link automatically turn on and turn on your TV, and using the Link's interface.

For what it was supposed to do, I think it is a really good device.

there are feew arguments, why is hw steam link still good, but you throw this? :D (yeah, ofc cable is better than wifi)

1) you cant connect hw steam link with mobile with cable, so i dont get your argument
2) steam gamepad looks like it works with mobile (never tried, dont know about rest gamepads)
3) it is useless making product, which can be replaced by app in tv and you can connect your tv with cable, no need of wifi

but most important, when they talk about steam link, i mostly think steam link for tv, not mobiles and tablets

I'm really glad I picked mine up when a local store was selling them for $5. It works much better than the $160 Nvidia Shield I tried - mostly in that the Shield kept having controller issues while the Link just worked.

Good riddance, instead of wasting money on a silly device that only does 1080p, people can use a HDMI cable that streams the picture from PC to 4k TV. No wonder they didn't manage to sell that many.

Ok, what if someone has the pc in his room and another TV in another room and wants to play on that TV, does he buy a 20m HDMI cable for that?

Also, how can he put a controller, mouse, keyboard at that distance?

It had its usage but only for a small percentage of people :)).

That's only a problem for kids still living with their parents, why else would anyone put PC and TV in different rooms? My TV has always been just another monitor, doesn't even have the TV cable connected.

There are plenty of reasons why a persons computer would not be in the same room as their TV.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, let me see.

I have 3 monitors and 1 TV in my room were I work.

And in the other room 1 TV.

What if I want to use the PC in the bigger room with the TV with friends, hook 2 controllers and play vs games like mkx, naruto etc
Or just want to see a film in that room

I can move the laptop, use the HDMI cable for 4k or just use the little box to duplicate my main monitor, hook 2 wireless controllers if I want a mouse to navigate I can use the steam controller if I want to use a keyboard to type I use my second keyboard.

This is not a typical usage, more of if I can I will do it.

This is why the hardware is not needed anymore.

I already said it, for me, it is more of a gimmick, see below.

I bought them cheap and just expended the nr of inches as far as I could. I know I can say I like what I did.
And the little hardware boxes cost like 1 and 3 EUR + transport, the HDMI cable was more than this :))

I never recommend to anyone what I did, 1 big TV and monitor is more than enough but for work 2 monitors or more are better :D.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

More monitors is always better. You could just get some cheap GPU to handle couple more if you want. I went from 2x1080p+1080p TV to 1x4k + 4k TV, 4x space on 1 monitor is nice, but of course that leaves me still wanting another. :)

What? I don't even... what? My PC in my office, my TV in the living room, as is with every single person I know. I'm sure there are a few that use their PC in the living room, but I doubt it's the majority, let alone everyone as you claim.

You claimed it when you wrote this:
"That's only a problem for kids still living with their parents, why else would anyone put PC and TV in different rooms? "
My PC functions as a work/gaming and media machine at the same time. Everyone has their own setup and preferences.

Learn to read before making claims about what others say. I merely said that adults who live in their own place are the ones in control of where they put their PCs, while kids living home are told by parents where to put them. If an adult chooses to put all his entertainment electronics in different rooms, it's their choice and not a problem.

Work is done on a work PC, which doesn't require expensive gaming parts and can be kept better secure from potential risks. Gaming and other entertainment is done on a gaming PC that you as an adult would be free to put in the living room, where you watch videos and play games.

Just like you're free to put your PC in the garage, TV in the bathroom and audio equipment outside, I'm also perfectly free to my opinion that it's a silly thing to do.

I find all your comments hilariously self-centered. So you seem to have enough space at home to have your PC in your living room, you don't use or live with anyone that uses the TV for something else, and you have been able to afford/cares enough to have different PCs for work and gaming. Good for you, but not everyone lives the same life as you do. No need to be so haughty and dismissive of other people's use for the device.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not at all, I know plenty of others who don't see any reason to put them in separate rooms. Is it common to have tons of extra rooms but so tiny living room it can't fit a computer table? Most people get a work laptop from their employer, exactly for the reason of own devices used for entertainment being unsafe. I never claimed I live any of that life, except the part where my PC with always be a HDMI cable's length away from my TV. So who really is self-centered here, me who just values practical solutions like that or others who are saying I can't have that opinion because it's different from theirs?

Come, one guys, everyone can do what they want.

The box was and is a great thing, I bought a great 4k panel TV that was very cheap reduced like 70%, it was not a smart one, because I didn't want one, now with this box I made it a smart 1080p TV and if I want a 4k TV for high bit 4k blue ray movies.

If you were in the USA the price would be a steal, 1$ and 3$ :)), I am in the UE and had to pay transport that was 8 times the price of the product.

My computer has always been in a spare room I use as my office and I know plenty of other people who do the same.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Baffles me too, I guess they are too scared to watch their videos where others can see so they need to hide in their own room.

And I still know plenty of people, young and old, who put their gaming PC where the rest of their entertainment hardware is and if they need to work on a PC they have one for that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Another odd reply.

I does not matter how many people you know who have their computer in the same room as the TV, the fact still remains that there are plenty of reasons for someone to not do so. I honestly cannot fathom why that is so hard for you to acknowledge.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The fact still remains that your replies are equally odd. Why is so hard to acknowledge for you that I can have my own opinion that has nothing at all to do with how some random other person thinks? People are totally free to put their PC wherever they want, they don't need permission or acceptance from me to do that unlike most seem to think. Just like I am totally free to have my own opinion that it's best to do things the most practical way. This doesn't change no matter how many people own no PC at all or any other statistic you pull out of a hat.

Oh my, you are quite the bright spark aren't you.

You said: "That's only a problem for kids still living with their parents, why else would anyone put PC and TV in different rooms? "

And I replied that there are plenty of reasons that people would not have their computer in the same room as the TV. You then started carrying on about the only reason being because they are scared to watch their videos in the lounge room, and now you come out with this idiotic spiel. Please point out where I was pulling statistics out of a hat.

I try to get a laugh from at least one imbecile online every day and you have helped me do that today, especially when I noticed you blacklisted me. xD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes like I have already explained here, only kids have a PROBLEM of not being able to choose freely where their PC is because their parents tell them. Same applies in lesser extent to married men.

No, you said "The thought process of you young people really baffles me sometimes." to which I replied the reason why they could prefer to keep their PC hidden in their own room.

I have blacklisted you far before this since I have no idea who you even are. But I guess it was because you are totally unable to read what is written like several others and reply to what you imagine was the intent instead.

I wish people would learn to read at least before calling others imbeciles...

Edit: LOL, you haven't been blacklisted by me now that I bother to check, so who is the imbecile here again?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well someone blacklisted me, count has increased by 1 this morning. Must be someone who thinks your shit don't stink if it wasn't you.

So I'm "unable to read what is written like several others"?

FFS pal, are you as thick as 2 short planks? Your 2nd sentence in this reply shows that you are the one unable to comprehend.

The whole gist of the argument is you questioning why would someone have their PC in a different room to the TV and me pointing out that there are plenty of reasons.

The part about being baffled was in relation to your idiotic assumption that the only reason a person wouldn't have the PC and TV in the same room is because they are scared to watch their videos in the lounge room.

The fact that so many people have posted replies to you pointing out reasons people would not have the PC and TV in the same room gave me another good chuckle.

For the final time: everyone can keep their PC in the garage, roof, basement or wherever they want. I can have the opinion that it's silly. Which part of this aren't you getting, tell me that instead of going on and on about how others are idiots because you can't read. Otherwise I'm done since you aren't even nearly as amusing as huge walls of text. Are you just trolling very weakly or actually want to have a conversation, up to you.

So which is the hard part?

  1. You can't understand that other people are free to keep their PC wherever they want
  2. You can't understand that other people are free to have opinions about where PCs should be kept
5 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh my god. You are thick.

  1. I NEVER said that people are not free to keep their PC wherever they want.
  2. I am not questioning any ones opinion.

The only thing I have done is point out that "there are plenty of reasons people would not have PC and TV in the same room"!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The only thing I have done is point out that "My opinion is that PCs should be kept in a practical place with all other entertainment equipment" and the only thing you have done is questioned that opinion with weak trolling and baseless personal attacks. So have fun trying to impress someone else with how smart you imagine you are.

Do you even know what a ? is?

Already have 2 of them, Bough one for 1EUr and the other for 2.5EUR because I wanted a steam controller and bought another link because it was cheap.

I had too many monitors linked and not enough ports and this was the solution, when I want to use 4k on the 4k Tv just swap the HDMI cable.

Was more a gimmick :D.

Of course older Smart TV´s cant run it, but those people had enough time to buy the hardware over the last years.
So there is really no reason do continue an obsolete hardware technology.
