I've read that the latest Devil may Cry game, is different then the previous games, because of developer change.
I haven't played any of them yet, but I plan to play the 4th game sometime soon.

For those that have played the first 4, and the latest, how different are they? Does the latest game still have the same feeling as the other 4?

DMC4 is a good game, but the whole backtracking thing gets quite boring storywise. Coming from DMC3 the style switching was awesome.

I haven't played the first 4 games (but I did get 3 & 4 during the sale), but I did enjoy DmC quite a bit. It just wasn't worth the $12.50 that I paid for it during the summer sale

DmC feels very different from the previous games, both in gameplay and tone. Some of the differences:

  • Previous games had lock-on.
  • DMC1~4 didn't have the angel/devil weapon system, which in turn gives you much better flow in fights.
  • In DMC1/3/4, Dante has a flippant and sarcastic personality; he's essentially designed as a joke about action game characters. In DMC2 he's fairly serious (one of the many reasons it was the original dark horse of the series). In DmC, he's just an asshole, and more or less the joke what the original Dante was parodying.
  • In DMC1~4, higher combo tiers (S, SS, SSS) require high variety and speed in combos to acquire. In DmC, they're given out like candy on Halloween.
  • The older games are harder.

Or a TL;DR of it: The older games had more style, better characters, and better, more difficult gameplay. The new DmC has better graphics.

My thoughts on DmC: Devil May Cry, the game is easier than the previous titles but provides some fun nonetheless. The problem I have with it is that it tries to be serious, original and somewhat emotional, but doesn't realize it's writing is laughable and hilarious.
The reason I liked DMC3 was because it didn't try to take itself serious. It knew what the game was supposed to be - a fun, stylish ride through a crazy roller-coaster.
The same feeling you ask? Not one bit. It has nothing to do with Devil May Cry in general. It has the name, but everything that made the series popular is practically stripped and gone. It's a hack-n-slash action game alright, but that's it. At least that's what I felt while playing it.
If are a fan of the genre, you should try it. If you are a fan of the previous titles and cherish them, I would advise you to rent it. If that's not an option, wait for a sale. Other than that, you will find some parts of the game enjoyable, but for me the whole package wasn't worth it. Thank god for PS+, I didn't waste any money on it.

It's not a horrible game but it doesn't fit the DMC name, you're far better off sticking with 3 and 4

one flaw are the weapons as angel weapons tend to be all weaker AoE stuff while Devil stuff tends to be all powerful/narrow stuff, and overly specialized unlike Alastor and Ifrit

Well... my suggested course of action would be playing 4, then 3, then, if you still wanna play it, DmC.
Or at least that's how I did it- 4 was a nice introduction to the series, being somewhat easier than 3 and a much better port, thus allowing to get a good feel of the series without 3's issues getting in the way. Then, if you liked 4, try 3 since you will be able to appreciate the game without the bad port getting too much in the way...
Then if you wanna see how they butchered it (I AM kinda biased here) play DmC. For bonus disappointment play the Vergil's Downfall DLC.

But, like I said, I'm really biased since I don't like the direction they took it at. DmC feels more... how should I put it... casual, I guess. It's easy to pull off flashy moves and get "cool" scores with little effort. The "humor" is crude at best and the game takes itself too seriously at times. A lot of badly designed (that is- extremely boring to fight) bosses and so on...

DMC fan here! o/
I've been playing it since it was a demo on some resident evil cd back then

DMC 1 holds a special place in my heart. It had inovative combat mechanics for its time, a good story, a great level design with gothic architecture and incredibly charismatic characters. The controls may feel a but clunky now if compared to other games, the graphics are kinda dated and the voice acting is terrible and cheesy, although remarkable in some moments, but it's still an awesome game.
I think it was the first game that made me feel like I couldn't beat a boss, just to try again, and again, and again, and eventually do it :P

DMC 2 never happened...

DMC 3 is simply perfect. We got to see a younger, cockier dante, and learn more about his past and his relationship with his nemesis brother (and also play as him!). The graphics are beautiful, mixing more of the gothic architecture from the 1st game with demonic twisted places and contemporaneous structures. The music is excellent, the controls are fluid and, to this day, it's an extremely fun game to play! The styles system added different gameplay possibilities and the bloody palace added even more replay value to the game. Most bosses are kind of tanky, but they still require skill to be beaten, so it's NOT just a button masher.
IMO, this is one of the few games that i treat as a masterpiece.

DMC 4 represents, at least for me, a bigger change to the series than DmC do. We play as a character never seem before, and dante plays the role of a villain. The gameplay is slightly different than the previous games due to the new protagonist's abilities, however, in some parts you get to play as dante again, and then it's more of the same. The graphics are beautiful, excellent level design, but for me that's it. I didn't like the story so much. TBH I didn't play this one as much as I played the other games of the franchise...

DmC is complicated...
People have mixed feelings about this game for the fact that it's a reboot of a franchise that, for them, didn't need a reboot (and I'm part of them). However, it's not a bad game as they make it look like.
Ok, now I'll try to explain with a little bit of personal opinion and spoilers, so consider yourself warned!
In this game, capcom and ninja theory got rid of the japanese-influenced thematics and tried to bring the game to the west. Some people argue that the classic dante didn't need to look like an emo, smoke cigs or act like a dick to look cool, but the hard truth is: FIRST: the classic dante is cool on videogames, but he would be incredibly silly in real life, and SECOND: the focus in DmC is obviously to bring the character personality to the REAL world, not to make him look cool (think nolan's batman trilogy). The dante we see in DMC 1 and 3 is cocky and cool without being a dick because his interaction with everyday humans is non existant. He is introduced to us as someone who naturally lives among demons, and that's it, while in DmC we have a dante that lives both in demons world and in human world. He's gone through foster homes, he's been considered crazy, he had real problems that made him hostile to people. But guess what? play the game and you'll see how his personality develops, his hair turns white and slowly he becomes the old dante we all love! :)
The hate you'll see about this game is a lot based on butthurt and aversion to change, so I recommend you play it and draw your own conclusion.
NOW TO THE MORE TECHNICAL STUFF:
The graphics are beautiful (with a few flaws), and the level design is simply amazing. The morphing levels adds to the immersion and gameplay, and the color changing really makes you feel like you're phasing through dimensions. The music is good and keeps up with the pace of the game. The gameplay is fluid and, even tho it's easier to pull of higher rankings and the enemies seems to stay longer in the air for you to blitz them, the game is still hard to master on the harder difficulties. Instead of equiping certain weapons as in the previous games, you carry all of them during all times (after you unlocked them), but it doesn't hurt the different game styles. Instead, it allows you to build different styles on the run, which is good. bosses felt a little more tanky than the ones in previous games, requiring more button mashing than skill, witht he exception of the last one, however, lesser enemies do require you to use different strategies and weapons to overcome them with ease. The voice acting is cheesy, but not japanese-drama cheesy like the first game. It's more like a supernatural (the series) level of cheesy.
Overall, great game, I recommend it!

My suggestion for you is: Don't rely on user reviews. Play all the games (except maybe DMC 2...) and enjoy this great franchise that introduced red orbs before GoW :D

Nice post, bro. Very in-depth. Haven't personally played DmC but hearing that it has a comparable-to Supernatural cheesiness makes me want to give it a try! Love that show.

Did you play DMC3 on PC .. coz most people are clearly not calling the PC port a masterpiece like you are.

I did, and it's good. It still has nice graphics and epic in-game movies.
It's just few times harder than DMC4/DmC that's why they cry.

Guess you're one of the lucky ones who doesn't suffer from awful port issues. Action game like DMC is unplayable without higher frame rates and DMC3 frequently dips to 15something fps. There's a fix for it by deleting some game files, but fuck removing sound files when the game has such a good OST. Better to use an emulator if you want to play it.

Well, I'm calling the game a masterpiece, not the port :)
To be honest, at first I played it on a ps2, but I did play it on the pc and the port isn't as bad as some well known bad pc ports, like dark souls. The keys are rebindable and the fps is stable!
If I recall correctly, there's some screen tearing, but that's all I remember :)

Been hearing about how bad a port 3 is. So for you guys who have played the PC port; just how bad is it?

I'm thinking of getting the 3&4 pack, but the bad reviews on 3's port is making me think of just getting 4.

I have played it and I don't see how it's a bad port , maybe because of the controlls ? You get used to them , or just use a controller . I believe people complain about fps issues but I didn't have any problems with that either .

Hmmmm, if you're okay with the frame drops at some area then go give Devil May Cry 3 a try. You may find the game a little too hard though at first.

It has horrible frame rate issues and controls aren't mapped correctly so you have to do it yourself with some other program.

Well, it doesn't have fullscreen and the tutorial explains the controls for a controller. There is slight graphics tearing at one of the bosses. Controls are restricted to a specific area of the keyboard so it might cause phantom keys on cheaper keyboards (in that case you can get around this with external programs).
All in all nothing too game breaking (I haven't experienced the framerate problems other seem to be mentioning), however I've seen people complain for less, so I assumed it'd be considered an awful port by most. :P

The DMC3 PC port is done by the same team that did the first RE4 port. Pretty much a direct PS2 to PC port with absolutely nothing changed. No lightning or shadows either if I remember right.

I hated hack & slash (if DMC classifies as that) type of games, until the latest DMC. I really liked it a lot. And it made me like the genre somehow.

Have not tried the previous titles so cant compare them all. But in all, its a really well made game in my opinion

I think one of the reasons the fans hated it was because the developer guy openly insulted the fans by removing the "anime hair"
and making it grittier.

Not exactly sure about it though.

Haven´t played any DMC game apart from the new one. It was Okay, i had fun but i was not blown away. I don´t like that much when games throw you cheap enemies that simple won´t care you are hitting them and the fights ends , hit, hit, dash, hit, dash; it is just a lazy way of inflating the difficulty. It has its higs and lows.
