Are there any mixed, "mostly" positive, or negatively reviewed games that you personally enjoyed? It'd be nice to learn about games that may have flown under the radar due to ratings.

The game that inspired this question is Alternate Jake Hunter: DAEDALUS. It's a visual novel that sounds interesting on paper to me, but it's sitting at "mostly negative
" on Steam. I haven't tried it.

Seems like lots of people are having issues getting it to launch. Older game w/ the new EA launcher kind-of-thing. Looks like it's got many cheaters too.

Well, there are reasons if a game has mixed reviews:

  1. The game is not really good.
  2. The game is good but a certain mechanic ruins it.
  3. The game was good but the developer abandoned it (or servers closed for multiplayer games).
  4. The game is good but it doesn't work well with the modern systems (or doesn't work at all anymore).
  5. The game is good but users don't like secondary launchers, especially if they require an online account.
  6. The game is good but the publisher review-bombed.
  7. The game is bad but it has a potential.

I guess I can add Might & Magic: Heroes VI and Port Royale 2. Heroes VI has Ubisoft launcher and Ubisoft usually gets review bombs. Port Royale 2 is currently at mostly positive barely but it was on mixed for a long time, it's quite old and kinda hit or miss for modern systems.

You covered just about everything :) Another reason could be that one entry in a series isn’t as good as the others, but it might do better if it wasn’t being compared.
I love the artwork for Port Royale 2.

Yeah, there could be some I missed but basically this. :)
Though most of those games fit #1, so they're generally accurate.

I love the artwork for Port Royale 2.

Yeah, early 2000's aesthetics are nice, for 2D (or isometric) at least. I learned Caribbeans with this game. :)

How is Port royal 2 compared to 1st and 3rd? I used to play first game as kid and loved it, so I bought 3rd in sale some time ago and haven't really been enjoying it anymore, I don't even know why.

Port Royale 1 and 2 are pretty much same, except PR2 is more focused on economy / trading and PR2 ship battles are one on one. Some people think it's inferior but I think it's okay. Also PR2 graphics are locked to 1024x768 and there is no HD mod. So generally if you loved PR1, you'll most likely love PR2 as well. Be careful about the systems after Windows 7 though.

Port Royale 3 is travesty comparing to these two. Another IP Kalypso butchered. They changed a lot of mechanics.

Damn, so I bought the worst of series? Any chance you tried Port royale 4? I noticed its release some time ago, but it was about time when I tried 3rd, so I ended up removing it of wishlist instead of buying it.

I also made the same mistake and after 10 years it's still an unfinished game in my library. I haven't tried Port Royale 4 but from the reviews all I got is they improved Port Royale 3 but in a dumb down way. So I don't think I would want to try it. Played enough Kalypso games to not trust them.

A lot of games have mixed reviews because of DRM or other factors that don't have anything to do with the actual game.

Dark Void
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout

For sure, certain subject matters can automatically add points! I’ve been interested in Everybody's Gone to the Rapture…iirc the complaints were about slow walking speed. That makes me wonder about which games can be elevated into a new category with mods. Thanks for your list!

Checked my most played games - the one I saw with mixed reviews but really liked was - https://store.steampowered.com/app/223100/Homefront_The_Revolution/

People didn't like the story, the AI and some other stuff. But I truly enjoyed the world building and shooting mechanics. I have finished the game 3 times I believe. While it has some obvious issues, I still enjoyed it thoroughly.

I don't want to get political, but from what I've seen through a lot of reviews, most of them are annoyed North Korea conquered the world, that and some graphical bugs. Yes, the game was not perfect, it was certainly worse than the first one story wise , but just like you I enjoy it quite a lot for what it offered. So yeah, this is a hit or miss for many.

Hadn't seen the political reviews myself. But seems weird considering that Russian, Chinese, Korean attack on West is quite a popular story line to use in books, movies and games.. One should be extra pity to dislike the game from something like that... Frankly this "revolution" type of gameplay where you secretly fight against invading force is overall a very appealing concept. Personally I liked that underground gorilla warfare type of gameplay the most in it.

I actually cant recall if I finished the first part.. Might have to go back at it again, seeing how many are praising it.

Sorting by my list of completed games and finding the 'mixed' section, I pick up the following games that I have beaten and did actually enjoy:
Call of Duty WWII - Yes I know, generic storyline and so on, but still reminds me of more classic shooters and I enjoyed it
Magnetic Cage Closed - Portal wannabe with physics based puzzled, and some good puzzles
Hot tin roof - A metroidvania type detective story with variable endings based on what you discovered along the way
Homefront The revolution - Missed what it was aiming for, but it's still not a bad game
Just Cause 4 - Probably the biggest crime here was that it wasn't as fun as its predecessors, but still a fun chaos sandbox
Commandos 2 HD remaster - Most negative review seem to be about the Mac version and the fact they censored the game. It's still fun to play.

I went through my list of finished games looking for something with "mixed" reviews that I'm willing to defend and I managed to find 5 games that fit the concept, so here they are in alphabetical order:

  • Aerannis: mechanically solid if a bit generic, it's the story where I imagine it loses most players. It's really weird, to the point that it can be kinda hard to follow just what the hell is going on with the plot (specially towards the end), but even if I can't claim to have fully understood what it was trying to say it's pretty obvious that there's some sort of message that it's trying to communicate. And I generally appreciate weird stories so I had a good time.
  • Fugue In Void: talking about weird, this game is just weird dark dreams but in game form. I imagine that the mere fact that it's abstract, ambiguous, and a walking sim is enough to land it in the mixed tier. I love it because it's one of the very few games in its style among the much more well know (mostly because they're unquestionably better) NaissanceE and Kairo... I guess you could call them dark brutalism, or just Blame!-likes.
  • Mighty No. 9: I think I don't need to explain why this game is in the mixed bag, we're all aware of what a shitshow this game's development was. The thing is that the game itself is not really bad. I mean sure, it's poorly balanced and not at the same level of quality of a real Megaman title, but for an indie game is fine, I had a mostly good time playing it and there's some parts that are actually good.
  • Murder: people seem to hate this one because of how ludicrously short it is (between 30 and 40 minutes), but what's there is top notch in terms of presentation, it looks beautiful and it absolutely nails the vibes. Kind of annoying to see this one being blasted with criticism just for trying to be the game equivalent to a short film.
  • Sonic Lost World: I love this game, but the general consensus is that this one strayed too far from what a Sonic game is supposed to be and too close to a Mario game so right from the start it has gotten a mixed reception. I don't care, I'm a platformer fan first and a Sonic fan second, if I have fun with a game I don't care if it doesn't really fit in its larger franchise. I've seen people online base their entire argument against this game on the fact that there's a run button and that the running speed when going side to side is not the same as when going forward, as if the mere fact that it doesn't do momentum gameplay is some sort of unforgivable sin, just completely disregarding that the level design is built around the new controls so it plays fine.

Phew, went through my list of games I played and there are surprisingly few of mixed games there. Aside from 80% of them that aren't good, 2 stuck out as

  • Ballistick - decent, enough so for me to enjoy for 5 hours of gametime.
  • Frozen Synapse Prime - really enjoyable despite the clunkiness. But I had to put in some effort to not abandon the game at the start, and I haven't played any other Frozen Synapse games before this one. Don't play it if you don't enjoy tactical games though.

The Swindle and Below (Mostly Positive right now but always on the cusp of falling back into Mixed).

Below, especially, is very underrated to me. The game only really drops the ball a little in the final few areas and that's it. The ending is very cool and more than makes up for that imo.

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power. They tried 3D instead of 2.5D and people didn't like the change, so it got a ton of bad reviews. Granted, I liked the other games more as well, and I do think 2.5D just fit a lot better as is very obvious when they went back to it with Trine 4, but it wasn't bad at all!
It had the same magical feeling all the other games did, it looked absolutely beautiful and I had a lot of fun. I still love it and I've gotta give the devs credit for trying something new, even if it didn't work quite as well

In all honesty, i usually tend to enjoy games rated very positive and above. So, without taking into account review bombs, i'd say that Twelve Minutes, sitting at mostly positive, is pretty good. I agree with the rating though, and the execution ended up being pretty flawed, but still, it's an interesting game. Also, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, sitting at mostly negative, ended up being surprisingly fun. If your computer can run it and you have a friend, the DMZ mode is a surprisingly fun experience, and 100% free. However, you should be aware that the launcher is a buggy mess. The game itself is fine.

Not right now. All the games that I enjoyed were at least very positive. But I have quite a few mixed/mostly positive in my backlog and I hope to enjoy them.

Some of the games have bad reviews for other reasons than the quality of the game.

Thanks for the GAs.

Patrician IV Gold
Imperator: Rome. Or most Paradox DLCs in general. :-p

I couldn't come up with further well-liked games with mixed ratings. The closest candidates are:
Distant Worlds: Universe
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut

All favorites have high ratings. This is hardly surprising, considering that half of all Steam ratings are above 80%.

Van Helsing first game was awesome, sadly it went downward with series. I remember third was kinda bad. I really liked how it was focused on Katrina story.. and she kept always talking while she was out of screen, so I couldn't read text and over battle I couldn't hear a word. And these forced tower defenses...

Kinda strange that Imperator still sits at mixed - as far as I recall it was terrible at launch but received a few improvements and even a couple DLCs. I didn't play it much, but that's more to do with a lack of time to dedicate to it than to any fault of the game. The worst that I could say about it was that it was pretty feature-light compared to EUIV, but that's to be expected considering it received nowhere near its level of support.

Ok, here is a list of mixed reviews which I would give 80+ scores to:

  1. Shad'o is mixed (54%), but I say 81/100.
  2. Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim gets mixed (56%), I say 80/100.
  3. Deus Ex (Invisible War) is mixed (57%), but I would give it 84/100. It was good, just not as open as other, huh, Deus Exes.
  4. Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom is mixed (57%), but 82/100 for me.
  5. Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! is mixed (58%), I say 80/100.
  6. Fade to Silence has 62%, I say great, but very flawed, and give it 81/100.
  7. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 is 66%, I say 88/100.
  8. Relicta got 67%, I say 82/100.
  9. Aztaka is 69%, I say 85/100.
  10. Duke Nukem Forever is at 69%, I found it enjoyable enough at 83/100.

I mean, none of them was wonderful (hm, maybe Soul Reaver 2 was), but all pretty decent games, some with flaws.

Cheers!

Hero Siege, 69% mixed, and 49% recently, mainly because new saison change, but overall pretty liked it.
Vikings - Wolves of Midgard, 58% mixed, but having +100 hours on it, so you can see i pretty liked it.
Flatout 3, 16% really negative, ok i have get this one for free, but not that bad, with some nice content, all these hate is because really far from the legend Flatout 2. (completed main content in around 3 hours)
Wolcen, 56% mixed, ok the game was bugged before, but now with offline mode and all update, a nice hack'n'slash, even more on the current price at -90%, tottaly worth it.
Warhammer_Chaosbane, 58% mixed, honestly was a fun one, ok pretty simple, but was agood short hack'n'slash, maybe too short because level cap is 50 and main complexion take around 6-8 hours for it.
Xenon Racer, 65% mixed, nice Ridge Racer like, and maybe the best 3DClouds racing game with All-Star fruit Racing
