Dude I have around 1 TB of storage and I haven't even used half, so I don't really care.

Then I guess you just gotta deal with it, because using software to bypass it can get you banned.

The truth is i'm not a man. I'm just a nerd dude who sits in front on his computer all day playing video games. That's just how I am. I don't work out. But I never get fat because I eat extremely little. And I suck at every single sport.

Wait do you have some kind of religion that prevents you from downloading and watching porn?

Right. Because he's an idiot for asking you a question. What a good muslim you are, being a dick to people for no reason. Jackass.

Obviously don't hate it if you wanna whore it for profit.

"I'm just waiting for this to escalate into Valve issuing a statement saying "we noted that many of you were using inanimate objects to press keys on your keyboard, so we've updated VAC to check that an organic being be at the keyboard at all times" and some guy posting a video of his cat laying on the keyboard."
Rofl.

So you basically want to automate the clicks that accept you those new items in TF2?
Just use a macro (google that yourself), I have a software that came with my mouse so you will have to find another one that could click at exact coordinates on the screen and can repeat macros after an amount of time.
It may seem overwhelming for a thread operator but I believe in you. You can do it!

I don't think that idling is VAC ban material, explain yourself please, I'm curious.

Valve's Recent Update Targeting Idling
Manual idling isn't bannable, though use of an external program to automate the process (which would be needed in order for the OP to idle overnight) could potentially result in a VAC ban.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks for that piece of info. It says you may be banned. I'm sure VAC can't detect macro programs, but I can imagine it would try to see if an action is repeated at an exact interval in an exact pattern. There are ways around that too. Still I don't encourage idlers. I can proudly say I haven't idled in 3 weeks.
Comment has been collapsed.
you can bypass it easily - add random +-Xminutes to Sleep function and have fun ;p Ofc I'm not encouraging any form of scripting for TF2 idling - just stating, that it's pretty easy to trick checking if action was performed at same interval ;p

Idlers get items. Those items might get sold on the marketplace, which Valve gets a cut off. The idlers might also get crates, which they trade with other people (or sell on the marketplace, again with a small cut going to Valve) and those crates require keys which only Valve sell.
The idling community is working in Valve's interest.

Don't they get a flat percent? So, if prices rise because idlers aren't flooding the markets, anything lost in volume would be corrected by the increased price. Plus, rewarding people for playing the game instead of rewarding idle farms is a good way to keep the players happy.

O_O Didn't know about this update. Oh well seems my 3 upgrade to premiums got wasted. I guess I will just use them as extra backpack...
@ OP- I wouldn't try to bypass that if I were you. I doubt it's possible 'legally'. Someone might make a program to do it but you risk a ban. Not worth it.

It's 2013 and I wrote that without reading the article. So turns out no more textmode idling :(

On July 17, 2013, the way items are acquired has changed. In order to get an item, the player must be active, meaning they have to be:
Connected to VAC Secure server.
Responding to in-game drop notifications while not utilizing external programs to do so.
Running only one instance of the game.
Not running the game in textmode.

Things that could get you removed from Gabe's Christmas list (and also trade/VAC banned):
Running multiple instances of TF2
Using scripts and/or 3rd party software such as AHK to confirm drops
Idling is very much dead. The nails are in the coffin. Goodnight sweet metallic prince.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not so sure. Disallowing multiple instances of the game is the biggest show-stopper for idlers. Even with a script to confirm drops, farmers with hundreds or even thousands of accounts, now forced to run them one at a time, are going to find it a fairly denting experience :)
Comment has been collapsed.
It might say that, but Valve is not going to start banning people for using AutoHotKey. It's been a perfectly acceptable macro program for years now and people run it in the background for all sorts of things (accessability, ease of use, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). People do not get VAC banned for using spy or engineer macros or equipment-buying macros in CS.
Comment has been collapsed.
I guess time will tell. I think the biggest deal is their "multiple instances of the game" line. If Valve are as good as their word, that pretty much signals the end of the line for account farm operators :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Unless they're limiting active instances of Steam to one per IP address, I don't see how they can really stop it. I think the wording in their new policy update is mostly tailored to scare people off, but I doubt they're cracking down on idlers using virtual machines and dummy accounts. Valve probably believes that this additional layer of having to confirm item drops is enough deterrent.
Comment has been collapsed.
I suspect between Steamguard and trading records, Valve are already well aware of who has multiple accounts, and who uses them for large scale idling. I guess it all comes down to brinkmanship, and whether people are willing to gamble the status of their main account for extra TF2 goods.
Valve's general lack of clarification until now hasn't helped, but I think the linked statement of intent makes very clear their new stance on idling, and paves the way for their taking action against idlers. The only question in my mind is where they draw the line. The big idlers will be in big trouble, but what about those with only one or two alt accounts?
It's anyone's guess what Valve will do, but if their intransigence on repealing VAC bans is anything to go by, should they decide to take action against accounts, I wouldn't expect them to do any U-turns based on sob stories and pleas of innocence...
Idling just became a very risky game and, for many, the rewards no longer justify these risks.
Comment has been collapsed.
One per IP seems a bit restrictive. We have three separate ppl with 5 machines between us, two of who actually play the game (no idling, one account apiece) on a single public IP, via NAT. I don't think that's an uncommon situation, either. Surely they wouldn't restrict that?
Comment has been collapsed.
You can try to code a program that clicks on a specific coordinate in timed intervals. But that's too much hassle xD
Comment has been collapsed.
You could, but having read Valve's official word on the subject, I'd say this would be a seriously unwise course of action...

... First of all, neanderthal, it's holocaust.
Second, what in fuck do you mean? That idlers are "jews"? Yeah, real funny, dipshit.

"The Cheater's Lament is a headwear item, wearable by all classes. It is a glowing golden halo attached to the wearer's head by two slightly crooked wires.
This hat was awarded on September 2, 2009 to all players who had not used external idling programs and had played at least once since the introduction of the item drop system."
this event is known as the halocaust amongst TF2 players

I do, but I hope you understand why I posted what I posted, not knowing of this item. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here... Pretty sure he meant "halocaust" not holocaust :)

Well, sucks for the friends I gave crap to. I idled while I was out getting the groceries, but no more crap for them.

Is there anyway I could do it, because I idle overnight and I can't wake up every hour and take a look @ my PC.
