Is there anyway I could do it, because I idle overnight and I can't wake up every hour and take a look @ my PC.

Not to mention the people I gave stuff to for free, since I haven't played the game in ages, but hey, clearly the key prices will go down, right? Not like all that metal didn't already exist back when keys still went for 2.66 apiece or anything.

There's also the legit players I know who haven't found a single item since this was implemented. Clearly by playing you're also idling, right? XD

About a year from now, I'm going to be sitting here laughing my ass off, seeing prices maybe a tiny bit lower than they are now, and weapon for weapon prices having gone up, since I figure most idlers who stick with it will turn into hoarders. Valve's going to be laughing all the way to the bank with all you suckers who go back to buying weapons off the store, but you casual players sure as heck won't be.

This economist they hired needs his head examined, if he had the final say in this, implementing it right when folks have coinage saved up for games and items is a great way to ensure new steamers never buy anything off here again after finding out their fave FPS title isn't quite what they thought it was anymore.

Do what I will, probably.

Have TF2 running on your PC on an idle server, and play on your console in the meantime. Whenever you see that there's an item you get, click to get it and rinse repeat.

But now that I'm on a new rig, I can play the game without horrendous lag too, so I won't have to do that too much. Up to you buddy.

You can idle without being in text mode and from what I heard still keep the memory usage at the same level as text mode at the cost of performance. Here's a guide with a HUGE warning Imo, it's a bit messy.

If I were you though, I'd make some logical sense from how VAC works and what they posted on the tf2blog and think for a bit on the silly notion that VAC can detect something that isn't injected into a game lol But expect ppl to claim they know how VAC works here and post the contrary without proper evidence.

I've idled this way with both premium and non premium alts with some of my own variations for quite some time and haven't gotten a vac ban on any of them thus far. This puts me at about 3 days worth of "awkward" idling.

Or when they added the Mann Co. update. I feel that would have been a more relevant time to do so than now.

What happened? Did Valve finally solved the idling thingy?

you can't be in textmode anymore, run multiple instances of tf2, and you need to actually play the game (I guess that means non-scripted irregular mouse/keyboard/controller activity from user)

If i'm not mistaken, once you get a drop you have to 'accept' it. There isn't need to really play the game, you can still idle but once you get a drop you have to accept it to get more.

edit:
From an item drop perspective, a player is considered to be actively playing if they meet all of the following criteria:

Is connected to a VAC secured server.
Is responding to in-game drop notifications while not utilizing external programs to do so. < this is the most annoying.
Is running only one instance of the game.
Is not in textmode.

A player who meets all of those criteria is earning time towards random item drops (subject to the weekly cap).

can i idle in main menu (but minimized) and still get drops?

You didn't get any items if you weren't in a server.

Not in the main menu but once in a server you can alt tab out of it and check it an hour later to accept your drop, then alt tab out again for another hour. :P

If the server doesn't kick you for being afk.

Idling servers won't kick you for being afk and idling in regular servers is bad and shouldn't be done :p

You could technically still run multiple virtual machines with macro software and do this still, no?

and won't be cheaper to directly buy the metal than the electricity that costs?

Virtual machines. Not physical ones.

Don't use a VM, it doesn't run TF2 very well.

i don't really know how tf2 works and what you gain for idling but it seems to me like you are complaining because you can't more abuse the system...wow...

If you do come up with any way around the block, you'll be at risk of being VAC banned if you use it. But don't worry -- if you think about it, you are at no more of a disadvantage than everyone else in the TF2 community.

One of the best updates they've ever made. And why are you(not you specific) always blaming Gabe for everything? He has more stuff to do, like a new game series, or a new source engine!
Give him a brake please
