I think of it as a turn-based strategy game with many strong RPG elements. It's a fine line, and I can't say I'm confident that I'm correct to say it's not a certain subgenre of RPG. The subgenre even has a name: tactical rpg.
I personally consider it to not be an RPG because it doesn't have RPG gameplay, just RPG framework (leveling up, mainly.) You don't even have a real player character - you control a bunch of different interchangeable characters.
While we're on the subject though, have you played ZHP: Unlosing Ranger? It's a roguelike by the same people and in the same universe. It has taken so many hours from my life.

I see. I've always thought of Disgaea as being closer to classic pen and paper RPGs than a lot of other games that are lumped into the genre. The DM in this case is the game's prescripted events (or the developers, Nippon Ichi, if you prefer to think of it that way), you level up a character, allocate stats, choose which paths to develop in (be they certain magic spells or weapons), and go on main missions to complete quests and advance the story. If you're really interested in the topic, you might want to give the Extra Credits breakdown of Western vs Japanese RPGs a look. (All of their videos are fabulous if you've got some time to watch em!)
As for ZHP, I have not played it! Sadly I don't own a PSP otherwise I would definitely have given it a go. I love all of the other Nippon Ichi games I've been able to play :D

I generally don't watch made-for-Youtube videos. I'd much rather read because it takes so much less time to get so much more information. That said, I've read quite a bit about the differences between western RPGs and JRPGs. I agree that Disgaea is closer to pen and paper RPGs than traditional JRPGs are.
I love all Nippon Ichi games so far too. Even their weird Prinny games are great.

I like Fallout 3, TES: Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, and SWKOTOR I&II, I think me favorites are Oblivion and Skyrim, I can't decide between the two... I like Skyrim for the mods it has to offer, but Oblivion has Side's Sailing Ships and the fact that it doesn't lag on my computer...

Fallout New Vegas and Final Fantasy VI. Star Ocean: Second Story is up there too, right next to Secret of Mana.

Baldur's Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2, Knights of the Old Republic 1&2, Neverwinter Nights, Arcanum, Planescape Torment, Gothic 1&2, TES Morrowind.
Sadly newer RPGs still cant outshine the oldies in any chapter besides graphics. At times it even feels wrong calling some of these 10-20h, dumbed down games RPGs. But hey, atleast, unlike in the old days were you saved the princess and killed the bad guy, now you can chose to kill the princess and have sex with the bad guy, right?
