I have created this discussion to explain how a drone helped to renew the lease of life for my kid brother - who has been labelled as "unfit to work" due to a nerve disease. He has been unemployed for the last 15 years and has seen his dreams and wishes for his adult life .. fade .. and shatter... until last year, he found a new hobby, drone flights.

He bought himself the DJI Mavic mini (a drone with a top speed of 140km/h, a range of 10km, a maximum air time of 10 minutes, freestyled flight, controlled in a way simular to virtual reality, a 4k camera for crystal clear videos) and it wasn't long before my brother wanted to edit the images created with the drone, into video's..

His early work sucked big time, up, down, left, right, trying to follow his dog in the park, shaky movements and even worse editing skills made it no pleasure to look at. But he was proud, because he created it and we (his friends and family) started encouraging him to practice more, go different places and take his flights to the next level.

Over the next months, he started traveling with his drone, to make images and videos of scenery, first in the Netherlands where we live, later on even in other countries, and this improved his flight skill as well as his video edditing skills. By now, his videos no longer look as if made by an amateur, but almost semi-professional. Check this hyperlapse video from the 7 lakes in bulgaria.

Somewhere along the line, he lost interest in flying his drone or editing video's and when asked about it, he mentioned having filmed all that he could think about and he tried everything, and he no longer enjoyed practicing his flight control/movements. Upon which, our dad started writing letters to companies across the country to find a few enthousiast employers, who would be willing to pay a small amount, to have aereal photos or videos taken from their company or projects. (most of these projects are private and can not be found on youtube)

These new projects, renewed his lease on life as well as created new goals and reasons to keep at it; first and foremost some spending money and a renewed motivation to not only play with the drone, but work with his drone. Here are some of these projects:
skatepark largest skatepark in the Netherlands
dance group practice outdoors a practice training of dance group Blinq
solo dancer with hula hoop one of the dancers from previous seen dancegroup blinq, asked him to create a promotional video of her while dancing with a hula hoop.

He already signed up to make vids of a vacation park (bungalow park) and an advertisement video for an outdoor swimming pool. His latest completed project was a job from the local authorities to promote a living block of 4 flats. He hopes he wont be asked to film living blocks ever again. But for him to have the luxury of choice, his videos need to be seen more, and he needs more subscribers. All to attract new employers and projects.

Vids belonging to the highlighted words can be found on the giveaway page for those that are interested

Thank you for sharing your brother's experience and helping him with his project, it's really nice he found himself a passion that he can gradually turn into a stable job.

I have watched all the videos to help the YouTube algorithm in his favour.
The footage is really impressive and the views from above (especially in the 7 Lakes video) are stunning ^^.

Here are two constructive comments I would give regarding the videos (to be taken with a grain of salt because I have no knowledge in video-making):

  • A lot of the shots in the video are really short and cut away before we truly have a chance to admire everything there is to see. The drone allows us to see things in a scale that we very rarely get to experience, giving us a wide, overarching view of things that allow us to see many things at once. Keeping those shots for longer so we can truly bathe in the landscape, or examine all the details, gives a more comprehensive experience to the viewer. Also the speed of the drone in some pans/zooms could be a little slower as well. Establishing shots can be super powerful and it's a really good use of the medium.
  • A lot of different effects are used in the video. I get that he is just starting and that this is the best way to discover all that the drone plus the video editing has to offer, but in making reels to showcase to potential employers, it's better to keep the style consistent within each video. Some videos went from mirror mode, to colour shifts, to fast pans, to static shots, to fancy transitions and then quick cuts, it removes a bit from the watching experience because we are constantly reminded that this is a video and we can't focus on the subject at hand.

I wish him all the best! <3

Hi, mrGreen82!

I am a researcher in the field of urban planning and I saw that drones are being used for topographic studies (a job that was done by two or more technicians in one day can be done by a drone, with a much larger number of reference points, in a few hours) and aerial photogrammetry.

Ah! And those planes that spray crops are also being replaced by drones too, because the application of products (pesticides? idk) is much more precise. Airplanes spray large areas and materials can disperse to different crops, neighborhoods etc. while drones can only spray at specific points, saving material and acting only in areas where they are really needed.

I don't know exactly which gadgets need to be hooked up to the drone (but I know they need a program that traces a specific route so they can check the particular points/take the pictures), but maybe it's something your brother can research... This can open up the range of possibilities. : )

it so happens that my dad was 1st to buy a drone and my brother gained the idea from him.
my dad has less experience with controllers to preform actions as my brother has with his console games, and he started working on pre-designed flight plans for his drone. basically flying to a specific destination, gaining a specific altitude, preforming a specific action, (rince and repeat).

will post a link to my dads panorama pictures on the giveaway pages. (he had his drone fly to 5 different locations near our home, and make 360 degree panorama fotos. the drone itself made 24 pictures all around itself, and the software combined them into a single shot, which can be zoomed in and out and rotated in full... )

A friend of mine just bought a Drone, and wants also to start taking pictures of videos. I am actually curious.

I can't see your brother's videos since I am blacklisted

That's a really cool story and nice vids! Sometimes all you need is something to look forward to.

I have a friend who is a traveler. That's basically what he's been wanting to do for a living since he was a kid. He tried to find work with all the review/traveling guides, sites, magazines to be paid to travel but wouldn't you know, there's a lot of applicants and few jobs. And then he bought a drone and started honing his craft.

Now the sites pay him premium for his videos and pictures that he also sells to image banks, magazines, local tourism agencies etc and he pays for his travels on his own.

I meant all the photo/video stock sites. That's what he calls them anyway. I know he works with specialized sites but he also sells on shutterstock, dreamstime and the other big ones.
