I am relatively new to the community as compared to many others in here, but even for me it's easy to decide amongst fake and real giveaways. I open the list and constantly find out users making fake ones, just for plain fun or they dont understand the rules of the community whatever may be the case.
I was curious to know if some action had been taken before to stop these fakes from occuring?
Also there is my suggestion that Giveaways be allowed only to users who are atleast one month old in the community or some other kind of authentication (i'm sure something will be cooked up in the comments) as the most fake giveaways are created by the fresh profiles that just joined the community. This will give them time to understand how steamgifts works and not allow the hoodlums to play with other's emotions (Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2 - 3 copies, Dishonored all fake WTF??)

This is my opinion looking fwd to read what the others from the community think about this matter.

I do not think there are that many fake giveaways in comparison to the amount that are legit. According to the stats it's only 2.3% which is not that bad.
I only ever spot one every few days and I just ignore them. :D

The problem is if you have a filter, because fake giveaways are usually for really good games, and its terrible lol

Yes its easy for some ppl to ignore them, users like u and me, might go and check the person's steam profile to judge if it really is a real giveaway, but most ppl dont, and sometimes when they win a certain giveaway, it's a setback to learn that the GA was fake.
It's not about having very low stats of GA it's abt the community, having no fakes at all.

I guess this is true, just very unlikely to ever happen. :D But I do understand where you are coming from though.

Fake giveaways really suck, especially when you win one. That said, the majority are not hard to spot...

This. I mean, you're getting mad because someone got your hopes up about something and failed to deliver on it? This happens way too often in reality and you have no control over it. Consider SG a learning community. You learn to let the bad ones go and celebrate the good ones.

This. How often do you all find yourself with less points than you need to enter every single giveaway that you haven't filtered ?

I find it's just not worth my time to do any checking beyond reading the description. If the description makes it a definite fake, I'll just hit report and enter anyway.

I won a fake giveaway a few months ago, the really bad part is that the guy who created it still has two copies of the game it was for... (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Maybe a pop-up dialog box when someone creates their first giveaway making sure they understand they are committed to giving away that game.

maybe, but i'm sure they'll just mark it "i understand" like we all do in every software that we install.

It should override your webcam and microphone to start up,make the monitor show the eye of Sauron, then have it say 'ARE YOU SURE YOU UNDERSTAND YOU MUST GIVE AWAY THE GAME WITH YOUR OWN MONEY?' Then if you show signs of lying, your computer becomes a Transformer and kills you.

BECAUSE when u go to create giveaway page there isnt a message saying in CAPITAL LETTER RED font color explain things clearly in simple english like "CREATE GIVEAWAY MEANS YOU CREATE A GIVEAWAY TO GIVEAWAY THE GAMES, THIS IS NOT REQUESTING A GIVEAWAY PAGE"

there are a lot of people skip reading tl:dr FAQ, might as well put this @ that page in CAPITAL LETTER RED font.

Depends on what you mean by fake giveaway. Someone could create a Dishonored giveaway (and actually have the game in their inv lol ) and just decide not to give it away in the end, for various reasons. SG isn't forcing them to give you the game, so all you can do is give a "not received" rating and move on. :P (btw what's the worst "not received" % you've seen? I saw a guy with approx 35% lol. what happens if they have random # giveaways with 0% received? banhammer? )

But yea, overall, I'm skeptical about the big game giveaways as well.

I wasnt talking about those, by fake giveaways i meant one's which were never supposed to be givenaway at the first place, or the user doesnt have the game/key at all.
