Classy classics:
TES:3 Morrowind - less action-oriented than Skyrim, but !a lot! better in RPG aspects.
Gothic 1 & 2 - a must
Neverwinter Nights + dlc's
And - The Witcher, goddammit! Go get it!

Most of the ones I'd suggest have already been mentioned (KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc). However, I will strongly recommend Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (with the fan patch). Great game, and it's older so it shouldn't tax your hardware too much.

Most RPG games already listed, how about NWN (neverwinter nights)series, Risen, even you could use an emu and SNES games, those were AWESOME!

You meanie, after reading this thread I want to replay about 50 games... :)
Have seen a lot of great suggestions in here, but remember with that hardware you'll probably need to stick to the older stuff. So forget about shiny new games like Human Revolution & Witcher 2, and play some of the classics you might've missed. Baldur's Gate series, Deus Ex, Fallout 1 & 2, Gothic series, KotOR, Morrowind, Planescape, VTM - Bloodlines, plus everything I've forgotten. Good luck! :)

I would suggest to you, a couple of MMORPGs if you would like.
Pirates of the Burning Sea {free}.
Defiance.
They have something so far, no other MMO has, something a little more than just "kill 100 pigs" or "gather 100 flowers" quests.
Defiance requires you to buy it and I would like to buy it soon, but Defiance has interesting cutscenes and story development while you progress with people on the same missions and map.
And Pirates is a very in depth Pirate MMORPG with amazing Naval Warfare, plus most of the quests have multiple pathways which affect your reputation with the nations {Pirates/Brits/French/More} and you can customize and explore the Seven Seas, if you or any of you reading this would like to check it out, reply and I would most likely join you for assist and fun :D.

Older Fallout Games. Or Neverwinter Nights. 1 or 2. I suggest 2 over 1. Both are great. You can get older anthologies (neverwinter games with ALL DLC or all the icewind/baldurs gate games) for about 19.99

Give this lot a try:
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2,
Icewind Dale 1 & 2,
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2,
Planescape: Torment
Also....you really should give JRPGs a chance, some of the best RPG stories I ever played came from a JRPG

...because I'm looking to play one and need help deciding on one
I enjoy games like Mass Effect and Fable where your choices have an impact and games like Skyrim where you get to build your character up, the only problem I have is that I'm on my laptop that can't play high end games so if you have any recommendations please tell me, thanks!
