[EDIT 2:51 PM -06:00 GMT: It appears that the payout is going to be send within 24 hours, so let's hope for the best until then]

Sooo, as you guys might know, I'm a music producer.
I've just released an album this past month, and there was a dude who wanted to buy that album (I give away my music for free but I still have a BandCamp account for people willing to support my music).

Anyways, he bought it for $1 USD (I always release my music in a "Name your Price" scheme, so people can donate even cents if they want to) and after receiving the email from BandCamp notifying me that a new user bought my album, I started reading the fees and cuts they usually do to cover the transaction pricing, the hosting and all of that stuff. Normally I get around 30 cents less than the actual price that the fans pay, but I think this is just ridiculous:

Is this a fair cut for you?

I figured out recently that this happens when the thread is edited between the time you opened the page and you hit the submit button for your comment.

That's strange. According to their site they only count revenue share balance for physical items, not digital. And your situation looks like a rip off.

To put it in perspective, this is how a song from one of my old albums got through the fees (Keep in mind that this was from 4th of July, 2015 and the name appears different since I've changed it around 3 months ago)

15% is normal, PayPal is known to be terrible on low amounts…
The middle one is kinda a mystery to me without knowing how BandCamp operates.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When a fan purchases a physical item, the money flows directly from them into your PayPal account. As such, Bandcamp can’t take its revenue share at the time of the transaction, so instead we keep a running tab of the amount owed, which we call your “revenue share balance.” That balance is automatically paid off with proceeds from future sales (e.g., a percentage of a digital sale, or an entire physical sale if that sale is less than your balance).

However, the OP asserts they didn't sell any previous physical items, so it may be a bug. :X

Not sure what's going on here but doesn't "Applied to your revenue share balance*" cover what you're supposed to get? I think they got the listings all wrong, but those 0.74 end up in your hands one way or another, right?

Apparently, but I haven't received anything since the payment was done.
I got weirded out for all that "Your Share: $0.00" stuff tho

Comment has been collapsed.

“revenue share balance” - it means you sold a physical merchandise before and since the money goes directly to your PayPal, they can't take their cut and you own them that money. It is deducted from your future digital sales, that's what happened.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But I haven't sold anything physical, I just sell digital copies of my albums

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You should check your sales report because it seems your revenue share balance was not 0.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What do you expect them to do? Run the website, give you all the revenue and make a loss? If you're unhappy with that distribute it on your own! When I was on a label I would get 30% and you are getting 85%, so calm down.
Also... We get it. You do music. The first thread was alright. Aspiring atist, cool, been there, done that, but you do nothing else than trying to promote your music since then. Not trying to be mean, but it's something I noticed. :/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As I stated, I don't actually do it for the money, I got mad not because I didn't got anything, but because a friend that wanted to support me gave his money to the site.
I already knew that it would have cuts, it's not my first time getting a donation from a supporter either, but I think you lost the point: I'm actually mad because I got $0 from the revenue.
And also, I'm not trying to promote myself by saying that I do music, I wanted to give a little context by saying that I'm a producer, that's all.

I missed that part then, but ambidot gave you a proper reply to that matter apparently, so that is sorted out.

Okay, let's consider it being the context. Every single thread you made had that context.

http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/hMx88/could-you-guys-recommend-me-some-good-movies

Just some examples, If you'd participate in the community, okay, but it would seem that you're only here for advertisments and promotion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I haven't been so active in the community lately, I thought saying that I'm a music producer would make me sound more "interesting", but as I said earlier, I haven't been that active, so I don't think nobody would recognize me if I said "Hey, it's me again!"

And I'll admit that some of my first threads I linked some of my music, but I didn't made those threads to solely promote myself.

If you haven't sold any physical items it sounds like they are scamming you...

The paypal fees and their cut are reasonable. But that revenue share misappropriation...

Yeah, as I said earlier, everything I've sold have been just digital copies of my albums, nothing physical.

But thanks to the user Ambidot, I now know that the payout is going to PayPal in the next 24 hours.

Even 0 is ok considering you had to spent money to distrubute your material to people not too long ago.. When you get better at what you do and noticed by people, you will make money.

Dude, that's a plain wrong glitch or something over there... Nevertheless, I just wanted to say, why don't you set a fixed price on your album and put up a donation jar? I think you would make much more if you sold the album for X (it can be a small amount too) and get a donation in whatever amount the good people are willing to give...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's what I did after this happened, that's how I had it set up before, I dunno why sometimes it appears as "Buy album at $1 or more" when the day before I set it at $0 (Which is the price that lets listeners to donate X amount of money)
Nonetheless, it's set up as that now.

That is weird. I got an album on Bandcamp on exactly the same situation (pay what you want), and always received at least something even from $1.

Perhaps you had some fees that were not applied before, something accumulated or anything like that.

This is what fucked it up "Applied to your revenue share balance". I don't get this "fee" describe in all purchases.

You could ask them what that mean.

Even from ONErpm, I get paid every little dime, and the cuts are fair (I mean not abusive, what they pay overall for royalties is ridiculous, but yeah, whatever... that is what you get from making music anyway).

Yeah, a member told me that I got this "Applied to your revenue share balance" fee because apparently I sold physical merchandise through BandCamp (I've never sold anything physical through BC, everything I give for donations is digital)

I already sent them a support ticket, they haven't answered me yet.
