That's mostly driven by the acting at this point for me. So it has to be a list; Clegane, Jamie, Tryion and of course, Melisandre. Oh and that guy who has the thankless job of playing Theon.

There are too many characters I actually like a lot. The Onion Knight is probably my candidate though, if I have to name just one favorite. He has the best package of empathy, integrity and intelligence.

lol Girl got to be the most hated character on tv. For some reason. No wait, I know why.

I like her. Used to. Before she became the Boring Bastard's love interest.
I'm afraid last season pretty much lost me. I don't even think I'll watch the last season. I had hopes to read the books someday but we all know that'll never happen now lol

I think it depends where you ask. I think there are about as many people who hate her guts as people who love her, really.
Probably a good sign as it's been my experience that the most complex characters are always the most polarizing.
Tyrion is a good exception to that rule. He's a lot of people's favorite and he's not generally found much in the "character you hate the most" lists. And yet he's very complex and interesting, and definitely an unusual and unlikely protagonist.

Books aren't great actually. I gave up in the middle of third one.

They're pretty good actually if you compare them to let's say Tolkien.
It's like the Frank Herbert take on (medieval) Fantasy.

I know Tolkien's work wasn't generic when it was written but due to being copied a gazillion times they now read like cookiecutter-fantasy. (beside being somewhat pretentious)

Although I guess the same could be said about expecting the reader to keep track of roughly 300 characters. (pretentious)

I loved Tolkien when I was younger - he created an unforgettable world (which could never look cookie cutter to me). But, he often undercut his wonderful storytelling with excruciatingly bad direlogue and habitually over egged an already too rich pudding with cloying sentiment. In his defense, he almost never got in the way of his own story by killing the momentum of his narrative with repetition and padding - a problem I encountered constantly with Martin. Don't get me wrong - I did get some enjoyment from Martin's books as far as I got. I simply got tired of slogging through the tedious chapters to get to the good ones.

Tbh, if I am going to read fantasy these days, it will likely be China Mielville, Jeff VanerMeer, K.J. Parker etc.

Interesting. I never perceived the dialogues in LotR as particularly bad. Just the characters a little bit bland, due to the fact that it's High Fantasy, which also leads to bland dialogues.

Both of them have been accused of padding. Tolkien with constant 5 page descriptions of scenery; Martin with 6 page descriptions of every last meal. To be honest I did not particularly mind in neither case.

I have read the Song of Ice and Fire books repeatedly but it's been a while so if you don't mind me asking which chapters did you consider the tedious ones? The Bran storyline? (that's pretty much the one I'm indifferent to, while still realizing it ties into other storylines in a meaningful way)

I'll have to check out some of the authors you suggested. For me the best Fantasy books I've read in the recent years were probably the "Rivers of London" series by Ben Aaronovitch.

Funny thing, I'm looking at my bookcase right now and see a hardcover of Feast of Crows with a bookmark about a third way through. So I misspoke - looks like I completed three books and bogged down in the fourth. I can't give you a lot of detail since I read each installment as soon as they came out (which should tell you how much I liked them at the time) - quite a ways back and long before the series came out, which has, no doubt superseded the books in my memory by now. I stopped on a Greyjoy chapter, and although I found them dull, that doesn't tell you much. As I recollect, that volume was disappointing and felt like it wasn't going much of anywhere and that very slowly. I realize things pick up later, but by then it was just a case of too little too late for me. Perhaps dividing the 4th book into 2 volumes is where the bloat sets in - I can't say, since I didn't read them. The best example that I actually do remember comes from the previous books: Catelyn Stark. Way too many chapters devoted to her, which I found tedious and overlong covering business that seemed to me could have been accomplished in half the pages.

Thanks for the rec. I like urban fantasy.

Tolkien was a visionary but not a particularly good writer. I gave up on LOTR a couple of times as a younger reader before I pushed through and got to the part where I was too immersed in the story to care.

Martin's "problem" is more of the "ok I researched the hell out of this so I'm going to have as many historical anecdotes as I can in that chapter" variety, which makes some parts a little tedious, it's true.
And then he also completely painted himself in a corner with certain characters (like Daenerys stuck in Slave Bay as if he wasn't the one leading her there)

But it's also true that fantasy, like many other genres, is drowning in "airport paperbacks" and writers like Martin, while not flawless, are in another league entirely. And considering the sub-par writing in the show in recent seasons, I was just hoping for a more satisfying end to the story with a little less rushing and a little more character development.

You're not wrong. Both writers stand head and shoulders above the mass of writers who strive to cash in on the popularity of the genre and I really did enjoy reading both of them. I just can't help comparing them to writers that I like better. So many books out there and the older I get, the less time I have to spend on the ones that are poorly written.

I hope the final season sees some improvement too. What I saw last night was not encouraging.

  1. Joffrey Lannister, He did get painted into the easy bad light; do wish we could see what would have happened to him had he married sansa. Maybe he'd become the sassy King that turned gay because of how bland sansa is
  2. Cersei Lannister, gotta love a good bad gal who got little changes from the books
  3. Tyrion, Midget with a smart alec type personaility

1). I had a hard time with Joffrey. I can see what you mean about the 'what if' possibility of his life taking a completely different trajectory. Unfortunately, the root of his mean-spiritedness seemed to sprout from his genes and environment growing up. Still...Sansa could only have had positive impact on him, even if he only changed a little. I guess I'm on the fence! :D

2). There is definitely something likeable underneath everything that is the Cersei character. There is some humanity buried deep within her that is locked away in another fortress of sorts. She's a complex and interesting character. A fortress within a fortress.

3). Tyrion is definitely a favorite of mine, and of this thread. He's forced to suffer through a world less intelligent than him who can't see his potential. He's a charming underdog.

LOL yeah I think she would have totally disarmed him with her blandness.

Cersei Lannister, gotta love a good bad gal who got little changes from the books

I used to love Cersei but she's got so very one dimensional in the last season. It's like they completely ruined Cersei and Arya for no reason.
