I asked my friend in Russia to purchase a Kerbal Space Program gift for me off a Russian store. I thought this gift would be region locked only for activation, I didn't knew I need to be in Russia to play it also. So I asked him to log-in into my Steam account and I activate the gift. After that, I tried to download the game but I couldn't because it was saying that I need to be in a specific geographic region to play it.
So, my question is, if I use VPN to download that game and play it, is there a high chance that my Steam account will be disabled?

You will be violating Steam TOS by doing so.

But you're Gabe Freeman with crowbar. Also you have nicks kamaz and directx. You shouldn't be afraid of anything. Only Chuck Norris can defeat you! I need some sleep O_O
Speaking serious, don't do it. Most likely you'll get banned for that.

It´s ok to ignore it but valve isn´t a clever firm.
You can using it for years without punish so i don´t understand why so much guys fear to break some stupid rules.

Btw. you can look for shops they sell regionlocked games and look into treads about this shops.
Only few guys say that the accounts get banned from such things (the most say only that you need to be careful because you can get banned... but hey i can die infront of my monitor but what is the reason to fear it?).
You need to use VPN for games they are not allowed in your country and i can only speak for myself but i want to be able to chose what is ok for me and what not because i´m over 18.
I´m not a friend from pay much more as needed to import games that i´m able to play it.

VPN's are against Steam TOS and therefore you will be banned for using it.

Yes, it's against their TOS so you will probably get banned.

Here are two little example to it:

I buy Dead Island 2 in austria for my inventory.
I leave the country and try activate it in germany.
In germany steam say to me that i can´t activate it and so i´m not able to play it without VPN.

I buy Dead Island 2 in austria for my inventory.
I activate the game in austria for my account.
I leave austria and go to germany and start the game.
I´m able to play the game in germany without VPN.

It´s only important where you activate a game and the rest can be ignored.
It´s so stupid like rules about drugs in some lands.
It´s not ok to buy or to plant it but it´s ok to use it.

If commuting between countries is something you regularly do, you can contact Steam Support. They will enable the game for multiple regions. As already suggested, ignore the guy above you. No offense intended.

I´m not sure because i deinstall the game on my pc (it wasn´t working good with my pc parts) but need you not to log into your rockstar account like it is with games from ubisoft?
If yes i think that is the problem (and you can say thanks to the idiot that killed a taxidriver in thailand because he want to find out if it´s so easy like in gta to kill a taxidriver and steal his taxi...) why you are not able to play it.

You don't even have Dead Island 2 in your game list. Stop trying to tell people to break the Steam TOS because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. In a previous comment you say something like "...i want to be able to chose what is ok for me and what not because i´m over 18" so it's clear that you're some rebelious kid that will get in trouble or will get other people in trouble.

It was an example as i say it.
I have games like russian borderlands 2 in my libary and yes it´s region locked.
Is it now a better example for you?
And i´m not a rebelion and not a kid as you said.
I mean you are stupid or you don´t know what over 18 means?
"Hey 90 years old guy you are over 18? Yes? Ok you are a kid"
facepalm That´s what i think about your pathetic comment.

Rule of thumb is that if you are from a Row region, you won't face problems when travelling (barring censorship issues).

There are like 4537435483 bla bla steam users, do you seriously think that steam staff will look at all those accounts and ban couple of morons who use vpn tp play games that they actually pay for but in other countries? The answer is simple NO. VPN is safe if you are not using it to buy most of your games in other countries 5 to 10 games do not count gifts are normal.

The issue may be even worse as they probably use automated detection.

Do you think that people that work at steam manually check people to see where they bought it and where they are playing it?

You think that the automatic system works well?
What is the reason to think so naive?
The chance to find something good in CS:GO cases is higher as the chance to get banned from use VPN.

Not sure why people are calling in odds of being caught when nobody really knows the odds,in the end odds or not it is still a risk and that is the bottom line

I have better odds of being struck by lighting then winning the lotto, but that does mean i will not win the lotto and will be struck by lighting. You calling in odds of how easy it is to get caught compared to opening cases when you have no clue, and yet tell someone how they think is naive lol

Unless you can provide some sorta of stats to how many people have been caught for this you can not say what the odds are,i do not know the odds, but i still know it can happen regardless of the odds.

Do you really think they do not have better ways of finding out??Just because 1,000's do it does not mean they will turn a blind eye,

blah blah blah most of the Steam users do not use VPN so they would not have to ban 4537435483 blah blah blah users.

The bottom line regardless how easy or hard it is to get caught it still against TOS which can get your account disabled so you can no longer use any part of steam other then playing what games you have, and no longer be able to buy or sell anything,or worse get locked out completely.

The idea of just because tons of people do it that they will do nothing is just silly. That is like saying Microsoft does not care about piracy he still sells millions of units of window,so they will never come after you for piracy.

Anyhow to OP do not use VPN anymore and you wasted your money

Games are now not only region locked they are also play locked the only way you can play that game you have not is if you have a Russian I.P.You can however contact support ask the game to be removed so you can buy a copy you can play for your region. The U.S. and a couple other are the only ones left region free, but they will in the end cost you more then your own country in most cases.

I was also just trying to point out that it can happen and has happened, and you just down playing it like Steam turns a blind eye to it,if they did not care they would not even bothered to add it to TOS if they did not intend to enforce it.

So we where both sharing our views, but if your going to share your view at least make sure it does not mislead anyone

They don't do shit manually, it's all automated.

The "hasn't happened to me so obviously it's safe!" attitude is dangerous.

Straight from Steam's ToS:
You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, we may terminate your access to your Account.

Food is region locked. Safety concerns and health regulations made it so that you can't bring a lot of different types of food into or out of certain countries.

It is as joejoebuckbuck says.
Food is region locked if the country want it.
Like every other thing can be like animals, weapons, drugs, money, etc..

Here are some food for thought for some people.

Using VPN is fine.

I am working on an environment where I have to VPN right and left to do my job. And my Steam is active in background, of course it's being affected.

So far, almost 3 years doing that, my Steam account has received exactly ZERO infraction or warning.

So yeah, stop being paranoid. VPN is fine. Using VPN to buy cheaper games or circumvent region lock will earn you a ban. That's two different things.
