I think you're way too cynical. There's no significant difference between jobs which are public facing and other jobs. To be good at your job you have to be reasonably talented, willing to work hard, and have some drive to achieve success. That doesn't make you a bad person, and that's the level where most celebs are. It's just that if you're a great programmer few people will know you, but if you're a great actor or singer people will. And in that kind of job looks also help, and again that has little to do with character.
Sure, some people have problems handling their fame, but that's more of a problem with self-destructiveness than destructiveness towards others. They're not that different from any other people, except that they need to deal with more.
