I mute games and listen to my own music, then when I'm not playing the game I'll listen to the soundtrack.

Also I think I've been tricked into bumping an advertising thread.

Mostly multiplayer games, or singleplayer games that I've beaten before.

Depends of which game I am playing.

When I play games like Dota 2 or any other game that doesn't require you to hear anything I listen to my Spotify playlist.

Listened to a 1940s channel on Pandora when playing The Saboteur, since I got tired of hearing the built-in songs on repeat. It was pretty awesome.

Edit: also, dammit... I wish I'd read the other replies before replying. :-/

I got like 40k scrobbles on last.fm/ in one year of playing WoW, I quit WoW and i've gotten like 13k or so in 2-3 years even though I'm playing almost as much as I did when I played WoW, so yeah, I listened to music overtop of games a lot more when I played WoW :P

also soundcloud ftw, much better sound quality all around :>

Always in-game music or nothing at all (except background noise in real life).

Somewhat related, what's the best way of playing music while you're in game? Sometimes alt-tabbing to go to itunes screws up games...

Just have a bunch of songs on the playlist. I'm using Foobar2000 since iTunes doesn't 'work'. Also try to see if the game has Windowed Borderless mode it helps on alt-tabbing.

Yes. Most of the time. Also listen to Talk Radio. Only play it with games that aren't story driven and no story dialog happens.

Yeah, I do. It's why I love games like Audiosurf and Beat Hazard too!

it depends. i do most of the time, but if its a game where i rely on the sound from my surroundings to get the upper hand (like in COD multiplayer or zombie games) then no.

Mostly ingame music. Unless the ingame music gets repetitive quickly, or I can turn the music & sound effects off without a big disadvantage then I have some metal on in the background on my iPod & awesome speakers. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Airbourne etc.

Either my youtube favourites, or a plug.dj room I regulate. No, they don't play the dubsteppy / anything similar - like all of the public rooms.

I always listen to my own music. All type of genres play and I sometimes get interesting results. I could be playing a competitive game or play some type of ultra violent game and out of nowhere, Def Leppard starts playing with their happy love music. Likewise, it is always a good moment when old school rap starts playing.

That's what I usually do, I only turn it off if I need to get headset WH mode on.

I listen to heavy metal whilst playing The Binding of Isaac. It's good for getting pumped up

Heavy metal isn't my thing at all, but this sounds like the perfect match.

Are Frank Klepacki's heavier scores considered metal? I'm not a fan of heavy metal either, but I sometimes listen to his soundtracks while playing war-themed RTS games.

Some time ago when i was playing on Xbox360 , i used to play belic and epic film music while playing Ghost Recons Advance warfighter online games.
Then i started to play my own music (i'm music producer) to see how fits with the genre of the game, for learning purposes.

Now i just play the game and if i don't like the within music, i just turn it off.

Have a nice day :)
