I have 2 questions and would like some input from some more seasoned "Summer Sale" users (I've only gone through one Winter Sale):

  1. Does the 66% discount on The Escapists make it worth buying now?

  2. What do you think the chances are that Factorio will go on sale during the Summer Event? If I had it now, I would definitely play it now.

don't think The Escapists will have more 66%

Thanks for replying - I guess I should get the Escapists now and hold off on Factorio and see how it goes. I just got done playing Stardew Valley until it became unplayable for me and I'm looking for a substitute "fix" for my gaming addiction.

I don't know about The Escapists but I do know that Factorio will not be going on sale any time soon, so go ahead and buy it whenever.

Really. Well, that's very interesting and handy to know. Thanks.

You can always buy it now and request a refund if it gets any cheaper during the summer sale. Only, you won't be able to play it until then (because you have to remain under 2 hours of gameplay).

isn't there a 2-week time limit on that? In which case it's too soon to purchase

That being said, I don't think escapists will go lower. If it does, I'm gonna snatch it up

I'm not exactly a "seasoned veteran", but I know for sure that:

  1. if you're sure you'll play The Escapists straight away, go ahead and buy it now,
    • it will most probably have the same discount during the Summer Sale anyway;
  2. Factorio is still relatively new, so it won't probably go on sale this soon, and if it does, it'd be something like 5% off.

If a game has been released within 6 months of the sale don't expect a discount of more than 10/20%, it has never happened.

I'm not so sure about that, plenty of games that get really cheap or even go to bundles shortly after release.

I'm solely talking about the Steam store, since I don't follow bundles. Perhaps some unpopular Indie games? Can you give (an) example(s)?

Jut from the top of my head, any game from Telltale usually goes up to 50% often even before the season is over, some games from Warner Bros. such as Mad Max, just recently WWE 2k16 (came out less than 3 months ago) already been at 50 or 55%, Saint Seiya: Soldiers' Soul released in November already been at 50%. Plenty of examples really, 6 months is too long to wait for a big sale on Steam.

I'd like to point out that episodic games count as soon as the first episode is released, because of the long development time it would make no sense to wait until all episodes are released, and Mad Max is a movie tie in so it has to keep it's momentum. But I will concede that my statement isn't always true, but it does hold up for most popular games though. Also the 6 months are more of a guideline than an exact rule, so +/- around 6 months.

My personal opinion.

Escapists looks like a game that'll end up in Humble. I'm not buying it from Steam.

Factorio is popular somewhat, I don't think it will even reach 30%.

I went ahead and purchased The Escapists bundled with The Escapists: Walking Dead game along with the DLCs. If the entire Escapist catalog gets bundled on HB, I may have to V8 my forehead, very hard. I also downloaded the Demo for Factorio to make sure there are no problems as far as my system goes. Going by the system requirements, it doesn't seem to demand much as far as resources and graphics.

The escapist probably will be bundled at some point, but I doubt it will be soon. Maybe at the end of the year.

Looks like I'm too late to dissuade you from buying Escapist (good game, but bundle friendly publisher and frequent sales make it prime for hb) :P.

Only a few games do not get a discount during the summer/winter sale. Factorio will get one for sure, but just don't expect it to be more than 50%.

Factorio will not be on sale or discount in the foreseeable future. Why? "We state it on our steam page, but people are still asking about it so I want to state it officially. We don't plan any Factorio sale. I'm aware, that the sale can make a lot of money in a short period of time, but I believe that it is not worth it in the long run, and since we are not in financial pressure we can afford to think in the long run. We don't like sales for the same reason we don't like the 9.99 prices. We want to be honest with our customers. When it costs 20, we don't want to make it feel like 10 and something. The same is with the sale, as you are basically saying, that someone who doesn't want to waste his time by searching for sales or special offers has to pay more." Source: Factorio Blog Post #140

Well, at least that's clear.

It makes no business sense to put your game on sale before or directly after it has been released tbh. Not unless you desperately need the cash.
