Traded for the Just Cause + Just Cause 2 + all DLC key a couple of days ago and clocked 8 hrs on Just Cause 2 so far.
With this modest gametime I can state the following opinions:
(The devs themselves have said it - sandbox first, storyline second, so I had that in mind before even getting it)

  1. If taken lightly, this game is really great
  2. It's awesome that every part of the huge map is "unlocked" from the very beginning
  3. You can basically go through the entire map without completing any mission (besides from the 2 obligatory)
  4. I like the variety of vehicles and especially the planes/helicopters
  5. The grapling hook is incredibly versatile.

On the negative side:

  1. Selected the normal difficulty level because I wanted to play this game for the lulz, still getting overwhelmed by Panauan soldiers from time to time
  2. Voice acting is really, really shit
  3. Sometimes the combat mechanics just don't feel right - bear in mind I'm used to FPS games, not a huge fan of 3rd person view

So what's your opinion of Just Cause 2?

What's your approach when attacking a military base?
edit: I usually go with a long range engagement approach but that seems impossible in JC2.

Don't jump inside a base. The best way (depending on the base) that I have found is to approach from behind or the sides, making sure that you'll stay away from any roads since backup units will arrive by nearby roads. If you have a sniper rifle with you, you can scout for enemies before heading in, but shooting anyone will trigger the alarms.

Enemy AIs will not attack you through metal fences, even if they see you. Use that at your advantage, but take note of the surrounding watch towers since the soldiers up there will instantly see you when you get close.
You can throw a few grenades over the fences to attack the enemies, but that's optional since I noticed the grenades to be inefficient (unless you're a pro grenade-thrower).

You can then create an opening in the fence (using your melee attack usually works, if I remember correctly). That way, you can hide behind the fence when getting shot at, but you can still easily move back in front of the opening and return fire to the enemies as well. Note that backup will arrive through the road leading to the base, so get ready to see them coming from the front gate of the base.

Try to be quick, will still keeping the enemies in your sight. Don't get surrounded by enemies or you'll get overwhelmed. Always make sure that there aren't enemies behind you before moving on. And remember that you have the grappling hooks+Parachutes combo. Don't let them go to waste, so when you feel like you're being overwhelmed, just grapple back to a safer location until you regenerate some health.

Also, if you waste too much time fighting the backup as it comes, you'll get your heat level higher, which could call in an enemy attack chopper. Unless you're ready for it and want to highjack it/blow it up, try avoiding reaching that level of heat and wasting ammunition and time.

C4 is a plus when blowing crap up, but most destructible objects can be destroyed with firearms quite easily, too. The SAM Sites and a few other buildings will need explosives to be destroyed, though. On most larger bases, you might find the minigun, which is highly overpowered and has an infinite clip. You can detach it by pressing the jump key (space as default when using a keyboard). Note that it will greatly slow you down while using it, and will disable jumping, rolling, crouching, grappling, and switching weapons. When you're done with it, you must drop it. You can't carry it with you in your "inventory". But the point is that the minigun is a massively badass weapon of mass destruction. It's extremely useful for quickly destroying a military base, and it can destroy SAM Sites and other buildings that usually require explosives. Hell yeah.

As an easier alternative, just grab an attack chopper and blow everything back to hell. Watch for SAM Sites and enemy attack choppers, though. As soon as you start wreaking havoc using an air vehicle, attack choppers will be dispatched at your location to bring you down, regardless of your heat level. (Wait, you mean to say I wasn't supposed to blow up that oil tower with my rocket-equipped attack helicopter? Damn.)

There are three distinctive attack choppers available in Panau, which are the AH-33 Topachula, the Sivirkin 15 Havoc, and the UH-10 Chippewa.

AH-33 Topachula: Has rockets and miniguns. It's tough as a tank, but it also handles like one, sadly.
Sivirkin 15 Havoc: A mix between the Topachula and the Chippewa, it's a bit slow at handling, but is decently resistant. Miniguns, but can have rockets too.
UH-10 Chippewa: Much lighter and easier to handle than the other attack choppers, but I think it can't take just as much damage. Can be found equipped either with miniguns or miniguns and rockets.

My personal favorite is the UH-10 Chippewa due to its extremely agile handling. It's easier to evade attacks by strafing and moving, compared to its two brothers.

Alright, I'm stopping here.
I just realized I'm beginning to write a whole guide, here, and I'm sure it's not what you wanted. Sorry for the wall of text. :P

[EDIT] Oh, you mean the collectibles. Well, perhaps you haven't played on the hardest difficulty yet. It can be much harder than just mashing a button, if the base is decently large.

I really loved Just Cause 2, and can't wait for Just Cause 3. The actual Open World nature of it meant that I was exploring the entire map before I even completed the second mission... could be good, could be bad, up to individuals, I guess. I didn't really have any complaints about the combat though - there are worse third person games out there. For example, I really love Resident Evil, but I really struggle to get a handle on the camera angles, etc. I think the gameplay and the copious amounts of explosions meant that I could gloss over some of the things others may consider issues (to be honest, I don't even remember the voice acting...)

Only other 3rd person game I've spent more than a couple of hours playing is State of Decay, and the combat felt more "on the spot". I can't really pinpoint the issue with JC2 but even for an unrealistic movie-style battling it still feels odd at times. Sometimes I can't help but feel that I got a shot purely by luck/coincidence, and also the enemies are really overwhelming at times, even on normal difficulty! But then again, that feeling may be caused by my lack of experience in 3rd person games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmm, I do think that most third person shooters tend to overwhelm you with more enemies and make you overpowered, compared to FPS games where there are slightly less enemies but you can die more easily.

Sainst Row, Just Cause, Red Faction... They all overwhelm you with enemies at times. :P

Believe or not, I'm more hyped for Just Cause 3 than GTA V PC release. And no, I don't own a console, except a PS Vita. Just Cause 2 is hillarious. I mean look at all the easter eggs you can find in it. A complete island for Lost gags, James Bond references, misplaced(?) objects and so on. That game is pure fun :)

Hell yeah! Can't wait for Just Cause 3. Sadly, my system probably won't be able to handle the graphics, and I'll have to wait for a decent price drop to purchase it (but knowing Square Enix, it shouldn't take too long).

And I'm also hoping for lots of Easter eggs in Just Cause 3 as well. It's one of these things that makes the game unforgettable.

Just Cause 2 was amazing but it wasn't the best sandbox game out there. The voice acting was pretty good as well. I have no idea what you're on about. The difficulty was pretty wide, of course. That happens to games like these. The enforcement / enemies tend to spawn non-stop.

I want to say it's good but it really isn't in my opinion. It's fun for maybe an hour... no maybe like half an hour. But than you realize that the only thing you can do is blow stuff up... and everything blows up in the same way, and it looses it's charm after a while.

The shooting is utter garbage and is just frustrating. The story sucks, it has you blowing stuff up just like outside of the missions.

After 3 missions you've unlocked everything the game has to offer in terms of mechanics. You just need to blow stuff up to unlock weapons, but you can fast travel, buy weapons and buy vehicles after 3 missions. The entire map is opened from the beginning. It sounds nice but honestly it's not fun, maybe I just need something more than blowing up the same barrels and gas stations in different locations to stay entertained... I don't know.

That and the world is empty and boring.

Sure the story/voice acting is ridiculous, but the sheer awesomeness of the gameplay more than makes up for the lack of substance. Plus, there are loads of great mods and Multiplayer was craaaazzyyyy fun in beta when over 1,000 players were all on one server.

Edit: I also feel that JC2 is what Mercenaries 2 should have been

Dunno if it's just me, but I really miss the days of the beta testing weekends... With the developers messing with the engine while in-game... And that time when everyone rushed over to pie island... It looked like confetti falling on a slice of pie. Still hard to believe that one of my friends and me triggered that "event". Yep. Good times.

Recently finished it in Hardcore mode and got all achievements. Excellent game play, yea the story is so-so but there is so much to do and so much fun to be had with the grappling hook. Definitely worth putting some time into it.

Well... I bought it, enjoyed it for a while, but eventually it got real boring to play. The car/truck handling was not too great... compared to the the driving in Sleeping Dogs. I hated the way Rico felt like a feather... he had no real weight-physics and was clumsy to use.

The sandbox environment was huge and had multiple weather and terrain changes... THAT was nice. But because every base/hostile territory could be treated the same way, it just didn't matter because it was boring. Another thing was the fact that you could run out of $$$ real quick especially when you run out of ammo... you can't just buy ammo drops, you have to buy the entire weapon all over again and it gets rather expensive. So instead of paying $2000 for an ammo drop (a la "Mercenaries" from Pandemic Studios) you have no choice other than paying $25,000-$50,000 for a gun drop>>>>>Retarded.

Plus... that grappling hook of Rico's was usefull, but not as a melee weapon... it would have been nice to have some punching/kicking/tackle/throw/choke/stealth-kill moves because whipping the bad guys with that thing goes nowhere real quick if you run out of ammo in the middle of some base on high alert.

My final thoughts on Just Cause 2... if you get it for free, give it a try. But if you're looking to buy... you might as well buy Far Cry 3 or Sleeping Dogs instead.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I wouldn't compare Just Cause 2 with Sleeping Dogs, even less with Far Cry 3. These games are entirely different from Just Cause 2 in multiple ways.

First is that Just Cause 2 was released in 2010, which is 2 years before Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3, thus the improved car physics in Sleeping Dogs. Second is that the games are all almost entirely different in playstyle.

I'm only saying that one can enjoy a better time with the Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3 games because they offer a better polished experience than what Just Cause 2 has to offer. If you have to BUY a game, you'd be better off buying one of those because Just Cause 2 ... IN MY OPINION... has too many negatives to warrant a purchase.

Will Just Cause 3 be a massive improvement from Square Enix?? I can't wait to see if S-E uses what they've learned from their Sleeping Dogs game and incorporates it into Just Cause 3.

And the reason why I mentioned Far Cry 3 was that if you were to turn Rico into a FPS POV you'd have a similar environment to run around in, and that's the only reason why I suggested people spend their money on that game instead.

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, sure. I can agree on the fact that Far Cry 3 and Sleeping Dogs having a more polished experience, but I don't believe that they are better or more fun, depending on one's taste in game. These games are too different to be compared, and both are great in their own ways.

For example, Far Cry 3 will never give you the same freedom as Just Cause 2 does, you can't pilot planes, you can't parachute (at least not until later in the game), and most importantly, you can't grapple. So basically, if someone likes to have absolute freedom to do crazy things and were to purchase Far Cry 3, they would be disappointed in the game. On the other hand, if someone would want a more serious game, they will love Far Cry 3 and dislike Just Cause 2.

I guess it's somewhat of a hit or miss. You'll either love Just Cause 2 or hate it. And it's likely that whoever dislikes Just Cause 2 will love playing Far Cry 3.

Best solution, buy all of these games and play them all. They're all very good in their own distinctive ways, so your money definitely won't go to waste, that's for sure.
And indeed, I'm hoping that Just Cause 3 will improve many things about the game and satisfy our expectations. :D

Game is pure fun, for me at least.
Considering I cant keep myself on objective and constantly get distracted, its grate place to be.
Playing with vehicles, doing stunts, and just plain blowing staff up is quite relaxing.

As you stated game is not without its problems with its mechanics, and I credit this to being console port.

But on happier note, multiplayer mod is chaos in best possible way.

I hope that Just Cause 3 comes with Co-op modes.
