You are talking about The WarZ, which was forced to rename to Infestation: Survivor Stories. Two different games my friend. The WarZ was/is a scam and ripoff of DayZ mod for Arma II. Just goes to show you that the similar naming can confuse those who are not too familiar with the games (as it was intended to do). DayZ standalone is still being worked on as far as I know (I don't follow it all that closely) but news has been a bit quiet lately.
If I were to read between the lines I would take the current 80% off sale for the Arma II franchise on Steam and on the Bohemia site as a precursor to DayZ standalone possibly coming to Steam Early Access soon. Would make sense from Bohemia's side to try and push sales of Arma II before DayZ standalone is out.

IMO,the game is in a horrible shape right now. So many crashes, hard to join a server. Isn't even that fun when you get in the game because usually zombies swarm you before you can even find a weapon. Zombies teleport everywhere. It's not worth it.

I think you are talking about WarZ. Nothing of what you are writing can be applied to DayZ. ARMA rarely crashes, no problem to join a server (but it's preferable to use a third party server browser to filter the servers, not the embedded one), and finding a weapon isn't a big problem, as well as, dealing with resource shortage issues is also part of the fun.

Then that 0.9 hours on record it's probably real. Played in the proper way, it's the most emotional game without a story I have ever played, despite some glitches you can see.

I would buy Arma 2 for Arma 2... but that's just my opinion :P

I haven't played in ages (not a fan of the latest updates), but I think it's still active. Just note that the Arma 2 engine/interface can be clunky and DayZ can be buggy but it's still a fun mod. If you don't enjoy it, there's always the Wasteland "mod" which is arguably more fun and there are plenty of people playing. The DayZ mod is available through Steam but if you want additional maps, DayZ Commander is the easiest way to install them (download link is at the bottom of the page).

They are apparently going to be coming out with a standalone game later, probably in 2014, or later this year (unlikely).
IMO new players should wait for that. But if you can't wait.. this would be a good time to get Arma 2. It only goes on sale every once in a while.

i have friends who are saying that from last 6 months .. and here I am enjoying so many different mods .
And after I have seen the latest video by rocket which he posted 3 days ago, i can say this with 200% confidence that standalone "Alpha" release isn't coming in the next 6 months. also,Final game might not be released until next xmas.

i play dayZ almost daily .. Epoch and Origins are the two of the best DayZ mods out there. If Zombie survival games is your thing then you wont regret your purchase.
I asked this same question in forums some time earlier this year and I am glad I bought it. at 80% off this is a really good deal to buy for DayZ.

Tl:D, yes it's playable, fun and cheap. buy it. Oh, also, Arma II is better than Cod and BF, so you should try that out too :P

lol I can't believe the standalone hasn't been released yet, here is a quote from the DayZ dev report, November 2012:
"We are still working towards a target for an initial foundation before the end of the year. But we will slip this date if needed, we will not compromise the project for the short-term gain of meeting this date. The reasons for any slippage would be publicly discussed, and would most likely represent a failure personally on my part to plan correctly. We will be assessing the results of our major architectural changes at the end of next week, and reporting the results to everyone when we have assessed that."

"tfw video gamers eviscerate a game that releases a too early (X-Rebirth), and then in the same comment get indignant over delays with dayz" -Rocket2guns (Dean Hall)
Meh, with the fallout from X-rebirth launching early to appease it's fans only to be seen as a failed game. . . . doubt Dayz will do the same.

Yeah but it's a different situation, the DayZ standalone was supposed to be launched in ++pre-alpha++ at a discounted price a year ago, can't tell if they're polishing a beta by now or if they were just clueless about the timetable when they made the original announcement.

and I'd like to ask you if it is worth buying for day Z.
(aka the game is fun, playable and is still alive).
