Well, my boyfriend plays this game all the time with 3 of his friends. They are enjoying it. :) But it depends on your playstyle.

IMO,the game is in a horrible shape right now. So many crashes,hard to join a server. Isn't even that fun when you get in the game because usually zombies swarm you before you can even find a weapon. Zombies teleport everywhere. It's not worth it.

I would buy Arma 2 for Arma 2... but that's just my opinion :P

I haven't played in ages (not a fan of the latest updates), but I think it's still active. Just note that the Arma 2 engine/interface can be clunky and DayZ can be buggy but it's still a fun mod. If you don't enjoy it, there's always the Wasteland "mod" which is arguably more fun and there are plenty of people playing. The DayZ mod is available through Steam but if you want additional maps, DayZ Commander is the easiest way to install them (download link is at the bottom of the page).

They are apparently going to be coming out with a standalone game later, probably in 2014, or later this year (unlikely).
IMO new players should wait for that. But if you can't wait.. this would be a good time to get Arma 2. It only goes on sale every once in a while.

well, I think it still is alive but I would rather save my money for the standalone.

Dayz is great I'd play dayz overwatch.. . . it it a more stable mod. Less script kiddies on on it too.

i play dayZ almost daily .. Epoch and Origins are the two of the best DayZ mods out there. If Zombie survival games is your thing then you wont regret your purchase.

I asked this same question in forums some time earlier this year and I am glad I bought it. at 80% off this is a really good deal to buy for DayZ.

Tl:D, yes it's playable, fun and cheap. buy it. Oh, also, Arma II is better than Cod and BF, so you should try that out too :P

Arma for 6€ is one hell of a deal. The Game is so much fun, it's insane how many mods and extra content there is for it. DayZ is also still alive and kicking, but getting Arma is worth it anytime.

There are some people who play it but the game is not fun. It's horrible, please do not buy it for dayz. And arma 2 itself is a mediocre game, but very unoptimized, so it's not worth the money too.

lol I can't believe the standalone hasn't been released yet, here is a quote from the DayZ dev report, November 2012:

"We are still working towards a target for an initial foundation before the end of the year. But we will slip this date if needed, we will not compromise the project for the short-term gain of meeting this date. The reasons for any slippage would be publicly discussed, and would most likely represent a failure personally on my part to plan correctly. We will be assessing the results of our major architectural changes at the end of next week, and reporting the results to everyone when we have assessed that."
