In the Catholic church there is the advent wreath which has four candles that are lit as you describe each Advent Sunday. On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day a 5th candle is often placed in the centre of the wreath. I believe this tradition was originally adopted from the Scandinavian/ Germanic ones.
