I am not a fan of visual novel games, the genre is on my Steam store's avoid preference list, yet the game's plot is unique enough to attract my attention. Also, there is plot ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). If anyone has played the visual novel, how was the experience? Right now I am deciding if I should play the game or not.

Summary:

Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.

After some background searching the game has a few controversies, albeit none of them are more concerning than the others:

  1. The creators of the game are from 4Chan, the website being infamous for anything goes - notably creepy, nasty, topics.
  2. The game fantasizes the disability fetish. Fair enough, there is adult content in the game so a person can assume that idea.
  3. Katawa is a derogative slang term for cripple in Japanese.

You want to talk about your opinion? My thread is open to all comments about the game. Saying more than an abbreviation would be far interesting. Besides, the visual novel is quite old, so it received equal parts criticism and praise since 2012 - nothing new.

I thought the game was new and I was surprised about a "disabled school" when everyone with some kind of 'disability' is dumped and then they found love. Is surreal and I found it a little bit insulting. Now you told me this is from 2012. Yikes.

I thought it was great. It was one of the first VNs I ever read, and really got me into the genre.

There's a lot of writing there; five, pretty long routes with interesting characters. Maybe it's my memory, but they all seemed to be somewhat unique characters, too, not just anime stereotypes (and their disabilities were handled well). The game never felt boring going through multiple playthroughs, and I still intend to go through it again sometime soon.

The art may be kind of 'generic anime', but it's all consistently good. The music is great. And yes, there was 'plot', too. ;)

In fact, it's really tempting to fire it up now and spend all day playing it again.

Whenever I ask one friend for some anime/whatever recommendations, he always says exactly one same line.
"Have you played Katawa Shoujo yet?"
And I always say no because this shit creeps me out

I played it, really liked it and recommend it. I'm also not a big fan of Visual Novels but this one was so interesting I ended it in 5 days (1 day per route). A pretty good storytelling about that disability isn't the end of the world. It can be pretty heavy sometimes but it's always worth it in the end. Every character is unique and interesting with their own problems, not only cause of disability, but with friends, family, status, etc. Yes, there are some "plot" scenes but every one of them has a meaning in the story and aren't some hard weird shit, just two people that love each other. I definitely recommend it and I'm sure it won't be a waste of time.
