I'm doing a trade with my tradable copy of a game and this dude's Paypal funds. Other than him going first because I have a slightly higher rep than him (he has zero on SteamTrades), what can I do to make sure he can't just cancel the funds transfer?

As you can probably tell, I'm a novice at Paypal trading, so thanks for any help.

Send it as a personal donation rather than a payment with a note saying "This is for the payment of digital goods, I will not dispute".

EDIT: My bad, read it wrong, make HIM do that.

Does this allow me to report him legitimately if he cancels anything? This looks like a great idea...

EDIT: Do you mean "Choosing Family and Friends Option" by personal donation?

If I recall there should be an option that says "Send payment as gift" or something along the lines of that. And PayPal are pretty understanding regarding matters like this, if you make him leave the note saying "I will not dispute" they'll usually favour your side more.

The gift option is only available for some countries

This. If it's not available for them, they have to pay the fees too or you have to pay the fees when you receive payment. Ask them to pay the fees if the option to send as gift/family and friends is not available. Don't give the game until you get the money you agreed on after the fees.

Easiest solution is not doing PayPal trades with people who have zero rep.

+1

There's no way to ensure he won't chargeback.

I've considered this option, but if I do so, I'll be getting only 4 keys, the average selling price for this game. If I get Paypal, I actually get more.

So much hassle and still no security.
The guy could get scammed buying the keys and then you can't trade with him.
The keys he buys could have been obtained in a non-legitimate way and get revoked leaving you with nothing.
Remember TF2 keys are well known as being a shady underworld market.
A substantial number of keys are purchased with stolen credit card details.

Keys don't get revoked.A big percentage of all keys is shady.

Keys don't get Revoked per say but steam support have in the past returned items due to shady dealings.
The keys could get returned to the original user if a high level of suspicious activity occurs on one of the accounts they've passed through.

As 999flame said, make him choose "Sending a payment to family and friends", and add a note saying he won't dispute it. I believe it is extremely hard to open a dispute with PayPal when you're sending a payment to family or friends.

I refuse to send Paypal funds with this sort of message unless i have received the goods first.
If you never receive the game or it was purchased with stolen CC details or something and gets revoked at a later point you have no comeback.

Trading all comes down to trust... Check out the people you are trading with as thoroughly as possible and sometimes you need to have a little faith.

I've done a ton of trades and had no issues other than an impersonator.

Even if they buy steam games, tf2 keys, or paypal, they can backcharge and mess you up.

The key is paypal is its easier to do it on a non-verified account (those are worth more in general, and can mess up their account). and easier less risky to scam like that ON paypal.

Only trade for verified PayPal accounts ONLY! Otherwise the guy can get a chargeback on you with basically no penalty (and nothing you'd be able to do about it). Also check his profile - gaming time, amount of friends etc.

How can I see if a PayPal account is verified?

You will get that information on the receipt after the payment.

I bought lots of games with Paypal. It's a win-win for me as I'm en Europe and buying games of US traders gives me a much better price.

Make sure the Paypal acc is verified. Make him to send it to family/friends. Make him to add a note that he will not chargeback.
Most of the guys with paypal would most likely have zero or very little rep - so there are risks. You want the money, you should risk it and go for it taking the previosly described precautions.

My current 14 +rep is mainly obtained by buying games with paypal. And as you can see, people are happy about the outcome :) I guess it all depends on the person you're trading with :)

How to check if the user is verified or not BEFORE trading:

1) Make sure you're logged into Paypal
2) Visit the following link: https://www.paypal.com/verified/pal=mail@address.here (make sure the mail at the end of the link is edited to the mail of the trader sending you the money)

Don't trade with PayPal, there is nothing you can do to ensure he won't chargeback, I lost 200$ because of that. All it takes from buyer is reporting that his credit card (with which he payed) was stolen and paypal will just take the money from your account and you will never see them again no matter what you do or how many times you'll contact support.

It doesn't matter if he's verified or he has hundreds of rep or not, the steam account can be hijacked.

What would happen if you'd transfered that $200 to your bank account before the guy charged it back? I'm curious...

You would get into negaitve and if you wouldn't pay back, Paypal would close your account after 3 months and they would (probably) handed over the debt to collection companies (but that really depends on the amount of debt I assume. But I wouldn't risk this anyway)

Make a listing on ebay. Make him buy it and pay with his Paypal account. And send the key by ebay messages.
If it's in your inventory, take a screenshot to prove he got it.
