Ok, so ... this puzzle originally was hidden as the second step behind my "easy" puzzle. (I honestly thought that one would be easy -- well, perhaps it was, but apparently finding it was not? or not worth your time? you snobs. :P) I had hoped more people would get to that second puzzle, but ... yeah.

So anyways, since the first one is now over and the second one still has a week5 days of life left ... here it is! There is no solver yet -- some have solved Q1-7, but so far Q8 has successfully held them back.

I have already given some hints, and I will repeat them here (starting tomorrow). But for now, the ones who already found it still have a small lead.

Usual rules apply. Don't share any solutions, blah blah.

So sad that a puzzle solution was leaked... what a bunch of a-holes

Well, I have no idea how to solve it and I have had my fair share of numbers thanks to s1n today.

ok, I couldn't take it anymore and looked at the solution...I just wasn't patient enough on the calculator - I even started looking for a pattern like that and then quit...would never have found that without hints - another trick added to the toolbelt!

Sorry I didn't answer the question you know deleted ... but the answer to that will be the next hint ;) Well and I'd only seen the question 15 minutes ago anyway

Never in a million years would I have gotten that, even believing anyone at all would is difficult for me, lol.
Sorry it got spoiled, but I am happy to know now :)
My obscure guessing was based on a Ukrainian book on programming :P

Yeah I didn't really expect anyone to solve it without hints (or being extremely lucky).

Actually that book was what made some others solve it ... maybe you should have read it more carefully :D ... but that wasn't the intended way of solving it.

Really ? It was (the) a programming book ? :o
Sheesh, I was too lazy to try find a readable version.
I just discovered my windows calculator has more settings!!! I've only ever used it for 1+1 stuff, lol, made my day :D

Yeah by some weird fluke it was in there with the same numbers ... I picked the first one "randomly" and went from there ... seems I have some randomness in common with the book's author

Ok. With hint #4 and after an hour of button mashing I found the way to get the numbers.
Guess it's not math after all :)

Well at least not the math you expected ... but it is a pretty clever trick (or was at the time it was "invented"), iirc the googlable solution comes with a Wikipedia link if you're curious :)

Oh, nice. The sequence mechanic is kinda useful.

Got through Q1 - Q7 easily enough, then got stuck on Q8 and came back to the thread for hints, only to find that the puzzle has been canceled! What a shame. I'm not willing to give up and Google the answer just yet, though.

Regression analysis on the numbers given gave me a fourth-degree equation that appears to fit all of the numbers (for x=1, f(x)=5928; for x=2, f(x)=1411; etc.), but trying to plug x=6 into the equation gives a number that the quiz says is incorrect. Was I headed in the right direction by trying interpolation, or is the pattern something else entirely?

No, it's something completely different. Actually, what you try is way too elaborated. You should check the hints, I just added a 5th (and last) ... hope it helps :)

I got it. Thanks! But to be honest, I don't think I would have been able to figure that out on my own without your last two hints.
