Games you nearly completed, but maybe a quest was too tough or the last boss beat you? I can start with a few:

Final Fantasy VII - never finished the last boss after trying a few times
Medievil 2 - also did not finish the last boss, too difficult
Limbo - some gravity related puzzle near the end was too difficult for me.

I left RE Code Veronica unfinished for the longest time because I was so done with the stupid smashy puzzle and ridiculous “run away from the big monster” sequence that immediately follows it. Imagine my chagrin when I came back to it five years later and discovered that all that was left was the final boss and about thirty minutes of cutscenes.

Danganronpa V3 has an awful minigame where you get an achievement for getting a very high score on the hardest difficulty. It requires a lot of thinking, patience AND luck and if you mess up even a little you have to start over (for those of you who know my pain, it's Treasure Hunter Monolith). I'm not uninstalling the game until I get the achievement but I have no idea how I'm even supposed to do it since I just get angry and quit the game when I try.

Your willpower must be made out of space-age aeronautics material. There's no way in hell I'd try for that achievement.

You achievement hunters are a scary bunch, and yet in times like these you have my genuine pity.
Good luck, I guess? :s

Yeah, it's terrible. It's a tedious game to achievement hunt too, I think 50 of my total 100 hours on the game is just getting achievements that you couldn't get from the story.

Only this one left though. Thanks for the support, I definitely need it :(

Chrono Trigger. I was getting sick of the grinding before the last boss, stopped playing and never picked it up again. I also never finished Crisis Core, I was halfway through when I accidentally wiped most of data on the disk. I recovered a lot but not the Crisis Core save files.

I don't remember too much anymore but it's for the final fight with Lavos I think. I was drifting from playing games because of school, and I was just bad at this game in general. Though I remember liking the story, maybe I should play it again.

Yeah, it's been a while for me too, but I remember it being pretty straightforward and not having to grind at all. Some of the fights were challenging, but I don't remember it being too hard - I may have had to try some fights a 2nd or 3rd time, but it was certainly easier than some of the fights you'd find in Final Fantasy that did require grinding or special prep. Part of it may also depending on when you chose to fight Lavos, since, iirc, some times make the fight harder than others.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana, since Dark Souls 3 was releasing at the time I was finishing the game, I stopped playing it, even if the only thing to do was defeating the last boss, even if he wasn't that hard, I told myself to come back later, but I still didn't.

Cave Story+, boss was pretty hard with many phases and it was too annoying and not fun to retry many times to defeat him.

Soul Calibur VI, in Arcade Mode the boss of the game Inferno appears there on Legendary difficulty, which can be unlocked by previously beating Arcade in Very Hard, and he was super hard, especially because of his damage, hyper armor and the fact that you have to win 3 rounds against him, and winning just one is already very hard, I couldn't do more than one, and I was really tired, and I just didn't want to spend more time than I already did, also probably Amy was not the best character to defeat him easily.

The Talos Principle, I was too exhausted to play more to beat the latest zone or levels.

I've got a similar issue with Ys: The Ark of Naphishtim. It's got a reputation for the bosses being harder than usual in the series, and I got stuck at the second-to-last boss.
Figured I'd take a short break and try again a few days later, but never got around to returning to the game because of reasons. In the meantime, I did beat the rest of the series as far as they're available on Steam, so there's that...

with CKII to EU4, EU4 to Vic 2, and Vic 2 to HOI4, your game can go from 769 to 1948 (and beyond)

Unfortunately, these don't get updated frequently enough, and from time to time you'll need to roll back your installation to an earlier version of the game for a conversion to be playable. Also, it's not unusual to have some very strange effects after converting, and some players recommend going into the file and making manual adjustments before starting the next game.

Edit: dammit, now I want to start a game of CKII with the intent of bringing it in to HOI knowing that I'll probably give up after a few hundred years, when I've conquered most of the known world

Mortal Kombat - Shaolin Monks, final Boss Shao Khan, damn is he fucking hard. I just thought i got him down after million tries, had almost no Life anymore and was already very happy, till he came back for a second round with his Hammer. Damn, how many times i didnt wanted to play Mortal Kombat - Shaolin Monks anymore, cause there was always a Boss where i died thousand of times.

Was laying then for weeks around, till i wanted to play and i thought myself where i was and then that remembering, oh no there. Always same and then after first try, mostly, got the Bosses step by step. Except Shao Khan, never finished it. Only that damn Shao Khan is still to beat. ^^

And i just remember also a other Game i almost finished 100%.

Urban Chaos - Riot Response.

Awesome Game, some Levels are very difficult, special if want all Medals or so.
Normal Missions i got all complete on highest rating, just some Missions with a Time Limit, where you need to rescue a Person or so was it, if i remember it right.

Was long time ago as i played it last, but only few of that Time Limit stuff i need to finish.
The last Mission Level was also for me very hard, many tries till i got it. ^^

Some of the recent cases:

The Council - I thoroughly enjoyed the game for the first 4 episodes (binge played them, that's the only way to play episodic games for me), but then just didn't feel the need to play further. Didn't really get the reason for that: I mean, the game was pretty awesome, I did love its dense storytelling. But I ended up not knowing the resolution of the narrative. Weird.

Divinity: Original Sin 2. Once again, the game was 100% up my alley, but after I'd reached the last chapter, I suddenly felt the need to play something else for a bit. "Something else" turned out to be a complete The Witcher trilogy rerun, and that was it.

But I think I'll return to these two eventually. Start from the beginning in a couple of years.

The game I'll likely never give another chance is The Talos Principle. While there's definitely a touch of pure genius there, the game got way too associated with a personal loss for me (my cat died literally when I was playing The Talos Principle).

The case that'd tormented me for many years was The X-Files Game: pirated Russian version was bugged, there was no option to do the very last action in a game, so I only finally got the true ending in the mid-2000's.

100% completion failures

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - I missed 1 piece of heart, and I have no clue where is. The game doesn't keep track of specifically what piece of heart you collect so I will live on missing that 1 measly piece of heart.

  • Super Mario 3D World - I was able to beat the final level for Super Mario Galaxy 2 but for some reason I can't get even half way past the final level

General completion failure

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - I got stuck at show link and couldn't defeat him for some reason. At some point I lost my save file. I need to come back to it one day.

"Up to the Task" - Complete all non-repeating challenges.

Basically, if you advance enough in the game, then you'll lack enemies to take out in specific ways and so you'll softlock yourself out of the achievement.

It's the rarest achievement in the game. From a 2.2% down to 1.4%

That's an interesting opinion. I play all kind of platforming games on a keyboard, including precision platformers like Super Meat Boy, but I'd say that in most platformers it just comes down to preference. However Guacamelee is VERY clearly designed with a controller in mind (mainly because of the 360-degree throwing mechanic, but not only) and it's one of the very few games I plan to use a controller for.

There is never any shame in giving up on 'rage' games. If anything it's kind of the opposite.

I usually have that problem on games that are far easier to complete. I'll get neck-deep in a game but then due to some distraction I'll end up not playing it for a while, and then it gets hard to go back in again. Like, forgetting the important plot bits of the scenario I left off in, or just outright forgetting the controls and knowing I'll need to be kinda sharp with them.

Speaking of which, I really need to get back into Dragon's Dogma. Great game.

Final Fantasy XIII last boss, like damn, this game overall have broken difficulty progress, from like 10 to 11 chapter is from killing everything in 1 hit to get killed by everything in 1 hit, and last chapter is even worse, like damn i was avoiding every single enemy. Last phase of the boss is a trash show, i tried like 2-3 hours, after that was checking some tutorials in the net "how to beat this fucko" and from there i got info about something like I NEED a certain skill for Hope or this black guy Sazh like a buff or something like that. Remeber what i said about last chapter is even worse? Yeah right, i can't farm levels at this point because normal mobs was too hard and when i was trying to beat them i was wasting items what i of course can't buy and i need them for boss also. Basicly it was dead end for me and i didn't have save from 2-3 chapters earlier to fix this problem, so i gave up.

But god, I’m so fed up with Final Fantasy XIII it’s go on “won’t play” pile after 37h. I won’t spend few tries and at least 15 - 20 min per one attempt to beat boss just because it has 3,5 mln HP. When I’ve beat few min earlier enemy with 1 mln HP in 2 min.

Batman: Arkham Asylum for 100% completion.
I mean, I could definitely do it, but the combat in the final 2-3 challenges got a bit annoying and I went "fuck this, I have better things to do". I think it was something about having to keep up a combo going while not getting hit but also the floor was regularly getting electrocuted, and basically the more boring and annoying parts of the game's combat system shined there.

Also DLC Quest and Braid for 100% completion.
Again, I could do them, but I really really don't like having to do speed runs. :D

Disgaea 1 was a grinding nightmare, or a grinders dream, depending on your flavour.
I still own my copy for the PS2 but lost the memory card with my save on it waaaay back. Apparently the other games did a way better job of taming that progression curve, and deal in other standalone subworlds / stories so you don't need to finish the first. And yet I still feel that little nag to go back and show it whos boss. I mean. Not that I will though.

Item world was pretty addictive though.
