I'm really not a big fan of the racing (sport) games, but I'm planning to get one, and get into it fully. In your opinion, what's the best, most enjoyable racing game on Steam?

Clue what I like: Crash Team Racing is the best PS1 game ever made. :)

Also this.

If you like kart racing games, the Sonic and Sega Allstars titles would be worth looking at.

Yeah, probably that for the kart racing part.

What about the actual racing games with cars? :D

Given the limited ones I know of, Midnight Club 2 or Burnout Paradise. I'd say Outrun 2006 if you could find an unused inventory copy after all this time.

So you saying, the best steam racing game is no longer steam game? :D Thats ... bummer. :D

Well, certainly my favourite. I have it on PS2 anyway.

Didn't had the chance to check it out, but F1 Race Stars seems okay for the 'kart racing' genre.

F1 for playing with your friends

Sonic for playing SP or online

To be specific, the one with "Transformed" in the title. The first game is horrible, but the sequel with Transformed in the name, is hands down one of the best kart racing games of all time, and by far the best one on Steam/PC. Definitely wait for it on sale though. I bought it for $10 a while ago, and more recently I think I saw the game for $5-7.50.

Are you more on arcade or sim games? Anyways, I would recommend...

  • DiRT series (imo, 2 is the best...);
  • Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box (pretty nice and intense arcade fun);
  • Some of the NFS series (I like HP :$);
  • GRID series (only played the first and had lots of fun on console with that...);
  • Driver: San Francisco has some interesting racing stuff too.

And maybe a look over here will help...

Yeah, my love to CTR might be a little misleading, but I will get at least 1 actual racing game with cars, and possible 1 cart racing too. :)

You have to pick one CAR racing, you liked, enjoyed the most. Which one? :D

Well, I would go for GRID then, as my first choice... Or Burnout Paradise if you're after some frenetic arcade racing, motorcycles and explosions! lol

I loved Burnout Paradise. It's such a great game, but I thought EA slacked off a bit on the PC port.

+1
I have Dirt2 and 3 and Burnout Paradise.
Dirt2 is the best of the franchise, and Burnout Paradise is a excellent arcade!

hot pursuit is so great. But they ruined that game with the way online is set up. Its impossible to find a random game now because it tells u nothing about how many people are online and what they are playing.

ZERO GEAR. Of course it's a karting game (I still like it better than Sonic and F1 racing stars even if it's dated :<)

No one else seems to be mentioning the TrackMania series. If you like time trials, arcade racing, and crazy tracks then I would have to say TrackMania 2 Stadium or Canyon (I have not played Canyon though). If you just want to try a TrackMania game then there is a free one called TrackMania Nations Forever on there as well.

I forgot those. Damn.

I mostly only played the DS versions though.

Trackmania 1 United still has way more content then all Trackmanias 2 combined. It costs more, but it's justified IMHO.

I have never played it, but I have heard that they are splitting up all the TrackMania 2 games instead of one game with different cars and tracks and the like. Though I really enjoy Stadium.

Driver San Francisco is incredibly fun. It's my favorite racing game since Need for Speed Underground 2 on the Gamecube. The game has a very fun tone and the driving mechanics are very fun to use.

2 off road games you might like:

I've been having fun with DiRT 2 lately (wait until it's on sale again, I picked this up for less than $5.00 US)
It's got tricky handling though so skip it if you are easily frustrated.

Fuel is okay if you like to just drive around freely, there are races in it as well, but the free drive is where it gets interesting (for me anyway)

Trackmania is huge fun but the cars handle like toys, it's about as unrealistic as a car game gets. Depends if that's an issue for you. It is bunches of fun though.

Actually, it was the end of Bizarre Creations caused by Activision...

Uhm, no, Bizarre created Blur, which was a direct competitor to S/S at that time. Split/Second was created by Blackrock Studios, and they were owned by Disney. They were also responsible for Pure.

Ah, I thought that you said about Blur on your reply :)
Split Second wasn't on Steam because there was distributed exclusively from Direct2Drive. (Currently Gamefly owns Direct2Drive)

In my opinion you should like F1 Race Stars - a Mario Kart style race game with f1 drivers from 2012 :)

I have too jump the GRID bandwagon - great game. Gets the balance between simulation and arcade racing quite right for my taste.
Also I had a lot of fun with Test Drive Unlimited 2. The whole open world thing works very well here and the weird sims-like avatar dressup stuff can be ignored for the most part.

For the kart racing I second Sonic & Allstars Transformed.

Dirt (or DLrC) is just annoying due to all the integrated BUY ME NOW DLC but if you can ignore that they are mostly good games.
NFS: Shift is good.
F1 2011 is great, but very hard.

GRID is definitely best (first one not second, second one sucks). But if you want open-world racing game then you should choose Test Drive Unlimited 2. It's so much fun playing online with friends, trust me.
