I just lost my job.

I've worked there for 6 years. Had a seizure. My colleagues were scared. To the point that they actually told my boss to boot me out so that they'll never have to experience that again. I can kinda understand.

And no, I won't share where I've worked to avoid people giving them negative reviews on Google or something.

But yeah, I loved that job. And my colleagues.

I've never felt so bad before. My job is gone, my colleagues are gone, everything.

So why am I creating this thread? Well idk. I think I simply need someone to talk to. I feel so lonely right now..

Of course there's a GA for you tho

Thanks for reading

It's terrible that people would toss you out with the trash, just because your health issues happened to make them uncomfortable. You deserve better than that.
You have my sympathies.

Is that even legal where you live? Here in the US, some states have what's called at-will employment which basically means they can fire you for any reason at any time, without warning. However, there are state and federal anti-discrimination laws that protect them from firing you for race, gender, disability, etc. Did they know you had epilepsy before the seizure? Either way, I think you're better off without them if something like a seizure scares them that bad.

Nah its not legal in germany to get fired w/o reason o. warning.
There are many laws protecting one in germany ,but most german citizien dont use it ,because they think of the cost ,time and effort it costs.
Yeah on top of that i would probably not wanna work with those colleagues ever again.

Germany is one of the MOST labor-centric countries out there. You definitely cannot terminate someone due to disability and it should be relatively easy to sue.

Wow. I don't know how else to react. Just... wow. I can't believe such a thing can happen in the 21st century. I can definitely feel your pain.

Half-serious only: are you sure they weren't considering trying to exorcise the devil from you, just in case? I mean, at least the two things would be at home in the same time frame... :)

Anyway, without asking for specifics of your workplace, what kind of job did you do?

And if you don't mind questions on your condition (if you do, by all means feel free to not answer, no pressure): what other symptoms beyond seizures do you experience? Can you tell when a seizure is coming and do something to minimize the damage (like lie down, wrap something around your head to protect it from blunt damage, do something so you don't bite your tongue)? Also, what kind of treatment, if any, are you doing for your epilepsy? Does it help control the seizures (as in, do they happen less often, are they less violent, do they end more quickly) and other symptoms?

Retail. I love that job. Working with people is my thing actually.

I don't get auras if that's what you mean. Sadly. If a seizure happens, I only have a very short feeling in my brain (Less than 1 second) and I'm out.

I am taking meds. But I cannot go full dose or I'll be too dizzy (Side effect)

Man, that sounds so tough. :( And since you have very little warning, you're always at risk of hitting your head badly or something similar as a result of those seizures, too...

I really hope you find another job (preferentially also working with people, since you like it!) soon -- and one with more understanding colleagues.

People don't really change much. It's more the setting that makes it seem like they do.

Yes, but the reason the setting makes it seem that way is that it somewhat limits the choices people have. I'd have expected the setting to make it not happen just like that, but I suppose I was wrong.

p.s. not a lawyer, but it's not only moronic and immoral to fire u for having seizures(unless they're very freq), I would assume it's illegal, no?

What do you mean with "I don't have the power to go to court"? There are lawyers that will help with your case "Pro Bono" considering the circumstances, there's always non profit legal groups. Don't throw those 6 years to the shitter, you need compensation.

If true, it is the easiest slam dunk home run case.
You only have to set things in motion with a visit to a lawyer with free first time council.

Even easier if you belong to a union.

I completely agree, it might be somewhat of an inconvenience but in the end, it sure as hell worth it. and also plz don't let them screw u over on this since if u be complacent, they'll do it to someone less too . at the very least go see a lawyer, and see how it is.

I could understand if you were working somewhere where having a seizure could be dangerous to yourself or others because of machinery or something like that, but if that is not the case then it seems wrong to fire you. The company could have just educated the other employees on what epilepsy is and how to react if it happens.again. People are afraid of what they don't understand.

If the other employees just read something simple like this, they would at least have a basic understanding of what is happening and what to do. Then they wouldn't freak out and not want you to work there. I feel like a simple memo would have been enough to educate the employees and have it not be an issue.

Thanks Chris, but what would I gain? Money? I did this job because I loved it, not because of money. And I don't wanna work with my former boss again. I miss my colleagues tho.

Comment has been collapsed.

Well - I'd say its more for the reason so it doesn't happen to someone else.

IMO even if you are not in it for the money, if you are getting fired over the company not liking you instead of having a legit reason (e.g. stealing, sexual misconduct) then you should at least receive monetary settlement for a predefined period of time... 2-3 months, whatever but some compensation while you look for another job. You still need to survive, buy food and pay rent.

Secondly as said - principle of it not happening to someone else. Companies can't just go around firing someone over anything they like. Workers have to be protected. As a minimum at least get job inspection to do investigation into this and get the boss lose his job or at least pay a fine if hes big shot there.

Of course I understand if you don't want to make fuss.. its easier to just forget about it. God knows I've overlooked bunch of illegal stuff at my workplaces but at least I haven't been fired. I just think being fired over health issues is way over the line of being content.

I actually find this quite infuriating. Your coworkers demanded you fired because of how they felt? What about how you feel? You have to live with that terrible illness and instead of support you got fired over them being upset? You should sue the company. I'm serious. Being nice while everyone else is being terrible is not a solution.

I guess that's because they do not know the illness. If they'd have someone in their family suffering from it, they'd know better, I think.

Sorry to hear this, this is probably illegal as well!

I wouldn't consider your colleagues and boss as mates after this really, possibly waited for the opportunity to get rid of you by the looks of it. A bit sad that work places are prioritizing people who don't have health issues. Granted, depending on the career and work you need to do, it may be justified, but most of the time I'd consider it not justified, as everyone should have a chance to become something in life while doing the work they like. I wish you the best of luck in this situation, as I can't judge this much from my current position.

I'm pretty shocked to hear that. You have my sympathy, I hope things get better for you soon.

I don't understand the behavior of your colleagues and your boss, so I think their decision is totally unfair, and even illegal (at least in my country)
The only reason that would make this behavior "understandable" would be that your work, and potentially another crisis could put your colleagues directly in danger.
Can you tell us what you do? (no obligation I understand if you want to keep it confidential)

If you have some opportunities, don't let them get away with that. Settle in or out of court, their decision, as long as you have a decent case. What's the point of liking the people or the place if that's how they will treat you when it happens rather than try and understand and at least try and accommodate to a position that doesn't put you at risk for a worse injury. It's not a cold or glasses, you can't just help it even if you want to in almost every case. What type of seizures, are they frequent, is there a cause, medicated? I'll listen if you want to talk about it. I've had some myself but have been lucky for a while now.

Permalink

I mostly have focal seizures, so I'm ok. Medication cannot be increased due to dizziness. But I have grand mals time from time and I can't do anything about it. They're mostly triggered by lack of sleep. Which is a problem since I also suffer from insomnia.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Only had grand mals so far and due to lack of sleep would make sense. Did you try multiple meds since those make you dizzy? Might not be the best medication. The first one I took didn't work either and it made my insomnia worse as well. Newest one causes kidney stones but it works.
