Personal opinion: The plot advancement is quite slow, scattering only a few hints throughout the story and then revealing it all in one ending. It could really have used another ending if you decide to give up or don't visit the correct spot at the end. This along with the loop problem and the ending's overall quality compared to the rest of the novel makes me suspect that the ending was rushed. Otherwise, except for expecting a picture of Myra with a necklace and an alternate outfit,it was solid. I'm not the best person to ask when it comes to romance novels, but I tried.

Version 1.1 was released about a month ago, which is after I played it,so what I wrote about the ending might have already been fixed. The author's comment about the loop is this:
It feels like a loop but it isn't one. You're forced to "fail" once, and the end variable triggers if you choose to stand up again. Go to the hill after choosing "stand up" and you'll see the ending.
I don't think any further updates are planned, but you can ask the author anything at his lemmasoft thread,or even reply to this comment and I'll do it for you.

First entry.
I'm trying to get over visual novels from all genres,so expect them to all have their own strengths and weaknesses. This one is slightly longer, but you may find the the ending to be less..impressive?

I just went through 40 Minutes to Eternity twice and I feel like I'm missing something. There is no mention of a Victoria in any of the text I read.

EDIT:And the quiz won't accept what I feel are the correct answers to Q1 and Q2.

Already solved by 4 other than me,so answers are ok. For Q1&2 the answer is a single word. I'll see if I missed anything about victoria.

I found the actual story script within the download and there is definitely no mention of anyone named Victoria.

I am using the Windows download - is it possible it contains an older version of the script in comparison to the downloads for other operating systems?

This is the victoria I'm talking about. The name repeats itself many times over the novel. I'm not sure what to make of those replies..

Oh. Shit. What happened is this: I read it some time ago. While writing the thread,I used google to quickly find the links again, and I got linked to the old version of the novel. The version I am using is the updated one from this thread. I'm sorry for messing this one up,and I'll try my best not to do it again. The links there have been fixed. Here is a direct win link to the updated version.

Publication:Non-free. So not going to be in this series, and not in my vns 101 due to being an eroge.
I'm not interested in it myself for the same reasons,so I'm puzzled about why'd you recommend this.

Hmm, so I finished this one. I'll start by saying that I usually prefer VNs with more interaction/gameplay (are these even called VNs?). Reason being in me getting bored with lots of reading. Meaning, I appreciate your choice of short VNs.

Anyways, here's some of my thoughts about it;

The progressing of the story was quite mysterious, which is of course a good thing if you have a good ending. Sadly, for me, I was quite disappointed with the ending, well, with the revelations at the end - unless I have misunderstood things of course. >_> But it wasn't so bad, as to ruin the whole experience for me. I have just expected something better/different.

Next, about the graphics; I don't think they were pretty, but I liked them for some reason (does that even make sense?). I have especially liked the people's reactions. Simple.

I think the music was nice as well. ^^

Overall, it was quite nice, I guess and a nice break from my regular games. So, I guess a thank you is in place for bringing this to my attention.

You don't have to like every part of it,so long as you find it enjoyable,I'm glad.
I think I know what you mean when you say that about the graphics, but it's very subjective,so I'm merely referring to the level of the graphics. So,compared to 40 minutes to eternity's level,I consider this pretty.
I have some novels with more interaction planned if I decide to continue this.

Indeed, it was enjoyable. Not one of my favorite genres, but I still liked it. If it'd be longer though, I don't know, I'd probably drop it.
Yeah of course, everyone thinks differently, hence the difference in opinions and whatnot. It's just that for VNs and similar 'games', I'm used to seeing the more professional artistic works, making my 'prettiness meter' a tad higher. Nevertheless, I found the graphics to be quite fitting and likeable. But yeah, compared to the previous one, these were quite pretty indeed.

Finished Sepia Tears.
It wasn't bad but drag out for too long. I really wanted to get to the ending and learn about the mysterious girl, but had to read in small portions every day - couldn't tolerate for long annoying little sister that says "onii-chan", characters in visual novel that talk about characters in visual novel and overload of otaku references and memes.
I liked the ending itself however and glad that it wasn't some supernatural twist about amnesia or time travel.

As for graphics, character's sprites are cute but some parts look sloppy - especially Lilliana's fingers. Backgrounds sometimes switch between being extremely blurred and perfectly clear. I think it's meant to symbolize something, but never figured out what.

Agreed on plot advancement being slow and ending being nice; I have a thing for strong endings so I'm
a little bit biased when picking them. I think it was on the acceptable level rather than "that dragged out way,way too long".
I didn't really mind the otaku references, perhaps because I didn't choose the options that advance it when I first went through. If you do,you get to see that Mark doesn't really like them. Rin should've just called him brother, but I don't think of it as too much of a big deal.
I didn't notice any weird or blurry graphics, and I'm too focused on making the next spotlight to go back and go through it again. It'll probably be up in 3-4 if I can get some quiet time to work on it,or tomorrow morning if I find that I can't focus.
If the blurry backgrounds really annoy you, take some screenshots and I'll try to figure it out or ask the dev.

Some of backgrounds are obviously photos and blurred so they not clash with character sprites. But backgrounds for indoor locations are CGs that are sometimes blurred and sometimes not. For example Mark's room: scene 1 at the beginning, scene 2 near the end.

I suspect that the author made several sketches before the final background version and accidently loaded the old one. PM'd about it,I'll update if there is a response.

Author's response:

"No, it looks like it was just a mistake with the filtering. The images are different because it's a different time of day, of course, but the first one shouldn't be filtered." I also convey you his/her thanks.

Thanks for contacting the author about this. I was speculating that room losing blur was suppose to somehow symbolize Mark's memory and vision of world becoming more clear. But my inability to understand why some other places were not blurred all the time was killing me. Great to have this sorted out.

Bump for week 3 up!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just finished this one. It was alright, but it really felt like needed to just get to the point for the main thread, and side threads like Lillian were there more to keep you guessing than to actually further the plot and development in any way. Other than that though it was fairly well done and had a decent amount of polish.

I am annoyed at what seems to be a bug though. I ran through every single choice and I'm still missing one CG. I'm fairly certain it's the Geass reference (where Rin has Geass in her left eye). It's the spot three down and two across in the SDCG section. Oh well, at least it looks like they left all the images in individual image files instead of packaging them up into one file where you can't look at them.

The story line was actually kinda of cliche in my opinion, and I thought the outcome was fairly transparent. The ending did feel very rushed, and a "bad" ending would have been nice. However, I found the slow pace refreshing and the characters endearing. I feel that the overall quality of the game makes up for any short comings it may have. Time well spent.

Comment has been collapsed.

Honestly,I didn't see that ending coming. I expected some of the elements, but I couldn't predict the whole picture, perhaps due to my inexperience with romance novels(ain't really my favorite genre). It really could've used an ending where mark goes to the wrong location or decides to give up,but like you,I feel that the overall quality is good enough. Glad you enjoyed.
