There's no need to buy an invite if you are patient, because you will be added to the beta automatically, some time after joining the official group ( Second FAQ entry )

i think i still have one trading card beta access gift in my inventory. if you want i can send it to you, just add me on steam

you get the cards to trade by playing games that are supported which are Half Life 2, Portal 2, Don't Starve, TF2 and Dota 2 i think, there may be more and there will be more added in the future

Except with F2P games. From the FAQ:
"Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing. For every $9 USD spent (approximate) since the start of the Steam Trading Card Beta, you will earn one card drop. This card will drop at some point as you play."
