That sounds like an unofficial expansion. I'm sure the only expansion came out was Rise of Rome

I own Age of empires collectors edition, has both the first 2 games and all their original (so not including the steam (new, prettier) version of age of empires 2 and not including it's exclusive DLC). 3 disks are in the case one of them being Age of Empires (1) gold which includes the base game and the rise of Rome expansion. Assuming we're talking about the first game because you mentioned rise of Rome then you got "screwed" out of your money. However if we look at the second game, Age of Empires 2:The Age of Kings then there's the Conquerors expansion which adds two new civilizations, the Aztecs and the Mayans (if that's what you mean by "race"?). In the campaign you play as the Aztecs and unrealistically defeat the Spanish invasion effectively changing the course of history, and making Mexican a real language, not just what stupid people call Spanish. Yeah, I hope that answers your questions, I did the best I could. I checked the Wikipedia page for any other expansions I don't have and the only one for the first two games is the:forgotten for the second one which is steam exclusive for the new, prettier version. Perhaps it was something with age of empires 3 or age of mythology? Age of mythology is a spin off game that also has a n expansion pack on it's own, look into that definitely, I know age of empires 3 has LOT'S of expansions too, I wouldn't know exactly what they all include so I recommend looking at that also. For your conveniance I'll leave some links to Wikipedia articles
Age of Mythology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Mythology
age of mythology expansion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Mythology:_The_Titans
age of empires 3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Mythology:_The_Titans
I guess there's only two expansion to AOE3 but there should be links to those articles on page for AOE3. Sorry I couldn't help you anymore than I did.

So about 5 years ago I found this Age of empires Expansion in a charity shop. It wasnt rise of rome so i instantly bought it thinking its some rare awesome expansion... thing is 5 years on i cant find it in my collection nor can i remember what it was called... :/ googling age of empires expansions only shows rise of rome so it either must of been a unofficial expansion or a expansion that sold so few that no one really knows about it.... it simply added a race.. thats all it did.
anyone know what it was called ?
