I was bored and got a 30¢ raise so I thought I'd spend some $cash$ on you guys. I hope you guys enjoy these GAs. If you don't know, I also have a Avatar the Last Airbender train and have a problem with a UNIX System going on right now.

The GAs:

As opposed to saying "thanks" or "bump" tell me what your favorite hobby(ies) are :)

Mine are scuba diving and playing hockey, until I broke my knees.

Congrats on your raise, I'm certain it was well-deserved and that you deserved more! :) My hobbies are collecting things (records, consoles from 80's & early 90's, steam bundle games...), programming & learning computery things like that, and spending time with my wife & cats. :)

what languages do you program in?

Stuff like C, C++, AWK for fun, C# for work (and it's not technically a programming language, but lots and lots of SQL also), tiny amount of Java for making Android apps, and various scripting languages :P

Nice, I mainly use SAS, SQL, and R but I have dabbled with Java VB c++ and Python

I'm probably doing more SQL than anything else in my daily job for the past 10 years or so. I really actually enjoy it, which is apparently rare, as most developers I've talked to absolutely hate it and try their hardest to not get assigned to work on SQL stuff :)

Do you say:

  1. S-Q-L
  2. "Seaqwell"
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When talking about the language I say S-Q-L, unless I'm talking with someone about Microsoft SQL Server then I'll say "sequel server" because that what everybody else calls it and I don't want to seem like the pedantic weirdo. :P

It is the holy war of SQL devs for sure. :) I once was in a non-SQL class with a guy from the Caribbean, and the teacher kept referencing "Sequel Server" during one part of the lesson, and this guy had no idea what the teacher was talking about. Apparently where he was from, nobody called it that. After the class we were talking about it he was like "What is this? Is it new? Is it like DB2 or what? I've never heard of it before!" ... and finally after a while of going back and forth like that, I realized what was going on and said "Microsoft S-Q-L Server". He responded with an "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" :)

I dive either in warm water near Hawaii or Florida mostly but I live in Michigan so I dive in the cold lakes when I am bored

Permalink

;-< For me its the other way around. mostly in our lake (4-6°C below 8m) above between 2 and 18 depending on summer/winter. And only rarely holidays somewhere else ... But at least for training it's good. If you want people to swim by compass, well the have to, because you don't see shit (1-3m).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd just dive in my bathtub if I could only have 1-3m of visibility. That must stink

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Jeha. In addition to that we have no plants and nearly no fish in that lake ;-<
But it's the only possibility where you can dive whith driving under 2+hours. And we are pretty lucky to have that lake. Most diving clubs around us have nothing (and need to drive the long way).
Ok, thats not completely true. There is another lake about 20min (more) away where we can dive as well, but the visibility is not really better. But this one has fish (up to 1.5 meter) which is kind of fun once in a while ;->

Our lake is fine for teaching and just diving, it's just no fish-seeing tour.

But if I dive in the sea it's kind of more spectecular for me I guess ;->

I'm a 70's & 80's rock kind of man

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My strongest musical influences are from the late 80s - early 90s, as can be observed from the genres I'm mostly into.

There is some excellent stuff from 70s and 80s, heavily influencing the bands I like.
But personally I have never really gotten into the music of the earlier era as a whole. Aerosmith being an exception.

Looking at my music library there is 341 tracks released or performed between 1970-1979. 2255 from 1980-1989. 23904 from 1990-1999 and so on, you get the idea... Naturally there is less quality stuff around from the 70s and 80s compared to 90s and later. Or maybe I like the wrong bands. There is a large volume of Led Zeppelin and Grateful Dead around various sites for example.

So many different ones for so many different reasons...

Probably won't ever make enough to own: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak automatic
Probably can't find: Omega Speedmaster "Mitsukoshi" version or Rolex Submariner w/ a spider web dial
Can afford if I'm willing to dunk into my savings hard: Rolex Datejust (2016 version) or a Rolex Submariner
Can purchase but would probably only for a special reason: Omega Seamaster, Speedmaster or Planet Ocean
Currently wearing (current favorite?) almost everyday: Seiko Cocktail Time on a blue perlon strap
Favorite watch in collection: My dad's Rolex Datejust

Yes, I actually liked them a lot. Didn't expect much when I grabbed one from the shelf, thought it being a cheap man's Indiana Jones or something. The movies really have that boyish adventure charm.

It is a real shame that some great movies / series just don't get enough attention. I was a bit depressed after I heard that Sanctuary didn't get new season :/

Happened to me too actually, as a kid I was growing fast and they thought I would be 2.05 meters at least. Then I stopped growing and still am 188 ... It really fucked me in a sports way coz I had almost no coordination as a fast growing kid and coz of that my coordination still lacks a bit. On the other hand, my best friend was like below my head, he was always up to my chin, amazing ballhandling, real short playmaker, and then he started growing. He's taller than me now and has awesome coordination...

You have a really cool hobby. Mine is manga and anime. Whenever I have some spare time and I see a sheet of paper and pencil/pen, I can't resist to draw something. One of my biggest challenge for drawing so far are dragons. :)
Otherwise I love playing old computer games (Amiga) and hidden object ones too.
And when that is not enough...then a good movie in the evening is my thing to do. :)

Have a great day/evening. :)
