Looks like I will spend most of next week in Belgium.
I wish I could say I am going there for leisure, but it is going to be a business trip, which amongst other things means I will be stuck in Antwerp.

I am sure many of you have either been there and even live there, so feel free to suggest anything to see / do / eat in the little spare time I will have while I am there.

Also, keep in mind that I do not speak a word of Dutch or German, and pretty much all I can say in French is "Je suis désolé, mais je ne parle pas français". That's a bit sad as I can speak three other European languages, just not those three.
Well, it is supposed to be a big "international" city I guess, so I should get by, right? Right?!

Here be Level 0 giveaways

That's funny, I consider Brussels a dump and always advise people to visit Antwerp instead

I'm not from Antwerp, or even from Belgium.
Antwerp is an aesthetically nicer place. Brussels is quite ugly. just google "antwerp vs brussels", and most articles will tell you the same thing
Brussels is a very functional city, which makes it better to work and live there, but is a lot less nice to visit

large parts of Brussels also feel quite dirty; in contrast, Antwerp feels cleaner to walk around; part of this is Antwerp's much larger waterfront on the Scheldt, which provides open space and fresh air that the Senne just can't compete with

Antwerp has a lot of small restaurants in the center where you can get different kinds of food, so I wouldn't worry about that.
There's also a big cinema at the edge of the city (Kinepolis) to pass the time.

I think my hotel is in the centre, so at least I will have access to food :D
Not sure I will have time for cinemas, but I think I will have a stroll around.

Im from holland, you should be fine with just English in Belgium also most people in Belgium are very helpful. Some things to do there:

  1. Antwerpen Zoo
  2. Aquatopia
  3. Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kathedraal
  4. Museum aan de Stroom
  5. De Grote Markt
  6. Shopping De Meir / Vogeltjesmarkt
  7. Train station Centraal Station Antwerpen
There are a lot of things to see and do, but it depends on what you like and your age off course.
Hopefully I helped you a bit.

Go to the zoo, last year when I visited I couldn't see the egyptian themed part of it, it was under construction :( Also say hi to those penguins from me, one of them was biting my umbrella.

Belgian here! If that's your sort of thing, go to Brugge, they say in the movie it's like a fairytale city and I couldn't agree more, definitely worth the small train trip from Antwerp. Word of advice though, better go early in the morning, before the hordes of tourists storm the city.

Antwerp has loads of things to visit, check this page. The Rubens House is amazing.

A few beers you cimply can't miss :

  • Duvel Tripel Hop HBC-291
  • Tripel Karmeliet
  • Orval
  • Barbar

Enjoy your stay in Belgium and thanks for the GA's !

Cheers for the info! Brugge has been mentioned twice now and it really sounds like a lovely place. I just wish I had time during the day to visit, but since it's a business trip I will only be free after working hours :(

I am not much of a beer drinker - I usually drink cider. But maybe I will try some of the locals.

try a fruit Lambic (not to be mistaken for a sour lambic) or a Kriek.
If you like cider, you'll like those

Next to Antwerp central rail station there's the zoo and between that central rail station and Anwerp city park there's the Jewish quarter with a lot of small shops were they craft jewelry and diamonds in the traditional way and there's also a diamond museum there and nice restaurants and delicatessens. The Jewish community of Antwerp is a key factor in the economic development of Antwerp as they do 85% of the diamond and precious metals trade in Antwerp.

That's interesting, considering that my hotel should be close enough to the train station I think I should be able to take a stroll around the place.
Hopefully it's safe at night and I don't risk being mugged in some dark alley :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's really not much chance for that because there are armed police and elite paratroops guarding the Jewish quarter with static and roving patrols and a side effect of this is that criminality is really down.

I've been there myself several times and I wouldn't mind to be taken down by some of the female police officers patrolling the area. ^^

Btw Belgium has loads of different beers, if you are here you should really try these ones, preferably modestly; as they are really strong ones. :-)

Regular Duvel 8.5° alcohol
Westmalle Tripel 9.5° alcohol

1st) I do not say this in any racist way but it (referring to Belgians in general as child abusers,...) is often used by foreigners to insult Belgians. It relates to the dutroux case, still to this day considered one of the biggest scandals in our country.

I'm from Belgium, ±25km from Antwerp. Antwerp really is a town to be explored on foot + public transport. Just enter the first tourist info, grab some folders you like and have the best time. If you have a car available I would also recommand:

Everyone is mentioning this "special" beer, I'm starting to get leery... does that mean it's laced with some weird barbiturates like the Moloko Plus? D:

Jokes apart, I'm not expecting anyone to be particularly rude :) All the Belgians I know - including my coworkers - are pretty cool and nice people.

Cheers!

I think with special beer they mean the Flemish word "streekbieren" what translates in English to regional beers. :O

First of all you do not want to waste time in the capital.
Antwerp, Gent (when they have the festivals which is probably not now) and Bruges ( must place to visit, check the net for images) are the places to go too.
