Yeah, the Capcom sale was supposed to be weekend only but it didn't end and the store page for the games say "special promotion: ends may 6th".

You hate the only good games on Steam...

I sometimes start thinking that game preferences are subjective. But of course, I come to my senses and understand that people can only like the things that I like.

(Games 10,223... found that to be a nice puzzle of whether it's ironic or whether it's just a bit depressing)

It's sarcasm. People can like what they like.

As to me pointing out your 10000 games... well, point is that you say those 50-odd games were the only good games on Steam. So either you have 9950 games you dislike and still paid for, which would be sad. Or you have the games, like most of them and it'll be ironic since you have a third of the Steam store owned and yet you talk shit for someone not liking some games.

I have to say, who is the idiot who put anime tag on NIER?!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

what distinguishes nier from anime if I may ask? (I've never played it, I don't know)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's a game made in Japan, but not based on an anime, nor is the art-style a typical anime style, so to tag it anime is saying that everything that comes out of Japan is anime.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you for the explanation Mayanaise. So is "anime" an art style or is it more than that? What defines anime?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Anime is like cartoon, nier is more like 3d or idk a realistic art? Its like saying that Superman/Spiderman from hq are the same as disney winnie the pooh.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In the general sense of the word, anime is "Japanese animation", but was first coined when the artstyle was unique, and before 3d and more realistic looking features were introduced.
Take Appleseed is a fairly good example - the original series clearly had all the traits of anime, while the later 3d series became more realistic, less-exaggerated looking: but because it's still just an animation and was derived from the older work which had clear anime styling, the new stuff is anime as well. If (maybe they did) make a game based on the new series, tagging it "anime" would be fair, because it originated from an anime.

This is where Nier would generally not be classified as anime, because (afaik), it was never an anime, but purely a game series (Drakengard, Nier, etc), and the artstyle isn't really that typical type.

But there's that gray area of what truly defines the characteristic of the anime tag.
Also, you can't tag western cartoons/games as anime, except in the rare occasions when they were designed in that way (take Batman Ninja as a recent example). I'm not the foremost person on this area, but I hope that helps.

"Anime" is short for "Animation", so anything that's animated fall into this category, so yes a cartoon is an anime, but so is Nier, the Witcher, Toy Story, or anything that's animated. However to further distinguish these different type of animations, you would need an adjective like "Japanese animation" or "3D animation" or "Western animation". The word "Anime" however has been mainly used to classify "Japanese animation", while the word cartoon has been mostly used to classify "Western animation", with the exception of "Adult animation" and such... hope this clarify things.

Same here. It's a lot of anime-themed stuff and in general that's just not my thing. The only type I can really get in to is the dark or more 'serious' stuff. I don't care for the sexual/hentai stuff or VNs, and I can't stand the cutesy, or chibi (or whatever other made up words there may be) stuff, and especially some of the high-pitched Japanese voices that I find extremely irritating. It's like scratching on a chalkboard to me.

Don't buy Under Night In Birth Exe Late, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign. there are newer versions of them. You can watch Sign's story mode on youtube if you are interested though.
People use the pirated version of Melty Blood AA to play online.
Croixleur Sigma's best version is for consoles.

Given the sale price of Under Night Late[ST], the Late version is still very good, I recommend it for $5 vs the $30 for the new version.

Well, the description says the English release is a console port, so naturally it's "censored".
Although if the game was stupidly censored (as some cases), the players would say it in user reviews and there is nothing about it.

No problems. It's the first review I read since usually the negative reviews are far more useful than positive to decide if it's something of intrest. See if what bothers other people are actually of interest.

Also memers seem to always vote positive for some reason.

Time for my VN recommendations:

  • At $8 each, the first two Danganronpa games are a good buy, without a lot to lose if you can't get invested.

  • Similarly, $1.49 is a great starting point for Higurashi - as it's something of an episodic series, you can try the first one now and wait for another sale if you don't get a chance to buy the rest before this one ends, but if you get a chance to try it and like it, stock up now. Get the 07th Mod for voices and better graphics.

  • $12 still feels pretty high for Steins;Gate at this point, as the PS3/Vita versions have both been below $5 or even free on Plus. Still a lot better than Elite, and worth the entry price. S;G0's got some good parts, but I'd wait for a larger discount. Seriously, though, leave Elite alone unless you really think Phenogram is worth $40+ (it's not).

  • $15 is a steal for 428: Shibuya Scramble.

  • Spike Chunsoft has been hesitant to do a real deep discount for Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, so $18 might be the best we see for a while. I'm disappointed that Zero Time Dilemma is still above $5, because that's about all that game's worth, honestly.

  • The House in Fata Morgana and Requiem for Innocence aren't really at their best prices, but I'd recommend them even at full price so buy them anyways.

At its core it does try to be a mystery thriller, but it switches between the perspective of a handful of different characters, only one of whom is a detective. It's still a very over-the-top story with plenty of humor as well as serious and emotional scenes. It's not really an FMV game either; while there are some motion sequences it's mostly stills - it's a visual novel with photography rather than drawn sprites and backgrounds.

I can't really do much to sell you on its art style (or lack thereof), but as a fan of the Zero Escape games you might like that it features a deeper mystery than what appears on the surface, frustrating plot branches and timeline jumping, plenty of bad ends, convenient amnesia, and some well-done (if contrived) late-game plot twists that are telegraphed well in advance if you've got a keen eye.

There's a demo for it if you're still not sold, but unfortunately I think it's PS4-exclusive. If you don't have a PS4, you could maybe look up a Let's Play of the first chunk of the game on YouTube or something, but be wary of spoilers.

There's also a postgame prequel chapter with an anime art style, if that's your thing, but despite being written by Kinoko Nasu (of Fate and Tsukihime fame) it's actually pretty weak in my opinion, and feels out-of-place compared to the rest of the game. There's also an anime sequel series that takes cues from this chapter, but it's not really great and even looking up the basic synopsis will spoil large chunks of 428 for you, so don't do that.

Too many games in my backlog, otherwise I would totally splurge on some of those JRPGs. 85% discount of Ray Gigant though. Apparently made by the same people who made Stranger of Sword City (which I really liked) That 50% Review rating makes it tough to consider though.
