Some games show extra details in the friends list, like the level, score, etc. I don't mind people seeing what I'm playing, but I don't want them seeing details like my score, level, character name, etc. I don't see how to disable showing this, and didn't find an answer searching the Steam forums. I made a post, but it quickly got buried with no answer.

There has to be a way because some friends I see it and some I don't. For example, friends playing Rocket League, for some of them I see what arena they're on, the game mode they're playing and the current score, but others don't show these details, just that they're playing Rocket League. I've played with the privacy settings, but I couldn't find what disables this extra detail.

I already tried that option. It just hides stuff from your profile. I just checked for an in-game option and didn't find one for this game. I also fired up Rocket League and didn't see one.

Back when I used to play it, it would show everything. If they were in game, it would show what arena and the score. If would also show if they were on the main menu, free play or a custom training. As I said, it didn't do this for everyone, which is why I think there must be some way of turning it off.

Sometimes it's an ingame setting. In Crusader Kings 2 the setting is Steam Rich Presence, might be something similar in Rocket League.

I didn't think to check for a setting in the game. I just did and didn't find one. I haven't played Rocket League in almost a year, but it's still installed. I fired it up and didn't see an option that would enable/disable this.

I do sometimes just sign out of chat when I want to play a game without being bothered. Most of the time I stay online though, and like I said, I don't mind that people can see what game I'm in, I just don't like these extra details in some of them.

If none of the above work, try going to your steam library and the games properties and disable the steam overlay for the game in question.

That's something I didn't try. It didn't work though. I'd hate for that to have been the solution since the game is an RPG, and I use the overlay browser to take notes in Google Docs.
