…then I hope you speak Russian fluently, because at the latest Steam maintenance phase, the Eastern European version, which offered English, Czech, Polish, and Russian as selectable languages, has magically turned into "Fallout: New Vegas RU" (this is how it shows up in the library now) with Russian as the only language.
Edit: Well, at least for some. Certain users say their version is the same just with the new name, many on the forums say the same, some others on the forum now can only see Russian. Yay for consistency!

https://steamdb.info/app/22490/history/
The funny part is that all the old languages are in there in the repository, they just seem to never download.

It is and was the same for other Bethesda games like Dishonored but now i looked and it not named RU like before but RHCP but i still see other languages in steam settings. And those Bethesda games wasn't counted on SG to account value when registering.

They aren't counted towards your account value as the sites uses the US store pricing where these versions aren't available and as such ahve no price.

It could be just a rename, the language options are still present within the game.

However in some cases there are language restricted copies. Not common, but happens. Hate these language restrictions. Like players from different countries didn't enjoy to play in the original language (that is usually english) or a different one.

I think it is stupid they don't include all languages to begin with. My native language is Dutch but I prefer all my computer software to be in English.
Not that this example matters in this particular case, but if you have multiple translations for a game just add them all.
Why would you even need a language restriction if there is already a regional restriction?

Not the case here but licensing. That's often why games don't include Japanese localizations even when they are technically available.

WTF? My Fallout: New Vegas even disappeared from my inventory library on steam. Just DLCs are there. :(

Edit: it is there but the link to store page says that it is not available in my country. Store page of the game doesn't know I own it. I can install it, though when I click on the install icon in the list of my owned games. :/

Yeah, I can also still see it in your Library. The Store page showing it as not owned should be related to the different versions.

Yeah, I know that feeling. While most people here on SG probably would't expect that I can be quite choleric at times and often when my technical equipment decides to troll me again I get so angry I can't think properly. Sometimes once I have calmed down the solution is pretty obvious ^^

But don't worry so far they haven't stolen your game yet :D It's "just" the usual regional version BS ;)

I also don't understand the logic of Bethesda. I live in the Czech Republic and

  1. It is central Europe, not eastern.
  2. Russia is somewhere else, we even don't have borders in common. Even our eastern neighbor Slovakia doesn't have borders with them.
  3. (Almost) no one learns Russian here.
  4. We don't have anything in common with Russia.

I guess Geography is not a strong point of Bethesda.

The real culprit here might be their local distribution partner (if I'm not mistaken)
1C / Cenega (that's why I deleted the last paragraph of my comment because I'm still considering that) but even if that's the case Bethesda should really care more about who they partner up with.

Their publishers are doing a lot of Sheogorath lately. That being said, CZ region here and I can't see the own tag in my store when I search fro F:NV or F:NV - Ultimate Edition (for some reason I previously had both tagged as owned). But I still have the option to install F:NV (no RUS appeared; got it as a Steam Gift from a friend)

If you are in CZ, store version would be for RU, thus your row in library won't cause highlight.

The Madjoki replied to me O:. I actually had problems to buy some Bethesda's games before. Last time it was DLC for Dishonored (kept getting errors during purchase, probably clash between RHCP and ROW versions), after a year it still wasn't fixed, so friend bought it to me. I'm okay with whatever version it activates, as long as it works and has English language :D

I mean, if I did, it'd be hilarious because I was being sarcastic. Because of the RU tag behind the new versions of FO:NV, the whole situation is blamed on "Russia". So, if people are reacting in a ridiculous manner, I decided to kick it up a notch.

Plus, what's wrong with erasing a country? Are borders being removed such an awful thing? I mean, that's barbaric, right? :D
This is some top level triggering right there. I mean, I can see the reason if you're a mega nationalist or something. But still, is this the battle you want to pick? A bad joke? :P

I personally don't care for Russia either, but I have no actual negative feelings towards them... I mean, maybe you support the idea of springing hate towards a whole country because of the actions of 1C, but I wouldn't condone that.

But thanks for your passive-aggressive comment. I prefer making fun of idiots through sarcasm.

EDIT: You know what? I give up. Maybe making fun of Russia-haters is a bad thing. I truly do not understand why it's bad, but if it is, it is. Thanks for the blacklist and such.

Repository has changed. Previously the game used only .bsa files and now they are merged together with .nam extension files to maintain backward compability. Steam just cheated people who bought Ultimate version by changing ROW to RU/CIS (maybe according to country set in profile or Ip range ). Just select the game and after entering properties click in steamdb link then you'll see the "This game is unavailable in your region". The name was changed to RU but i still can seel appid 22380 there and this is 100% ROW appid because CIS has 22490. Bethesda replied me that it is steam fault and steam support should deal with it.

Zmieniło się całe repozytorium oraz paragony(co powinno być karalne prawnie moim zdaniem). Dodało pliki z rozszerzeniem .nam do plików .bsa.

Niestety teraz repozytoria i czesc linkow prowadzi do 22490.

A guy from Russia here. Game has RU in the name, but fortunately still has 4 language options. Rejoice!

This still is a huge dick move towards those who bought the game, especially people like me who prefer their games in original language. So if they would really leave only Russian language option, that would ultimately screw me over, just like Ubisoft did with their latest and future titles looking at you South Park: The Fractured but Whole. There should always be at least two language options: original and localization. And in case the original language isn't English - three.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Russian and Chinese market tends to have only localised language. Considering both countries are at the tail end of the list of English-speakers by percentage of the population, it is an understandable decision since most buyers would want the local language anyway. Our country had a similar movement in the very early 2000s, then it was given up (mostly because while the dubbing here is legendarily good, game dubs were infamously horrid and cheap).
I agree that it should be possible to get the original and/or English. No matter how we look at it, it is the current lingua franca globally, and video games are surprisingly effective way to learn the basics of a language. (This is why funny enough CS:GO players start to get almost half-decent in basic Russian. :D)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Our early 2000s localizations were horrid too :D Even if most buyers want only local language, I think it's not a big deal to keep the original too. I'm not very knowledgable in this, but I think that keeping the original files has no affect on the production costs after all. Like, you just localized those files, why not keep them in final version instead of whiping them away?

Lol'd at the CS:GO reference XD Yeah, I totally agree with your every word here.

It is not just that. Keeping language files there means all audio files and all pre-recorded video files as well. This increases download size. In extreme cases, a language pack go as high as 20 GB (FFXIII). In Russia, it is not a particularly big issue as internet is fast and relatively cheap, but publishers think in CIS region, where only the Baltic countries have decent internet beyond that. (And in case of China, the commercial internet is pretty bad.)
Considering for most buyers the English language pack would be pointless besides Russian, it is more cost-efficient on server bandwidth to keep a fully Russian repo instead of sending over English all the time. That, accumulatively, can be petabytes of data saved yearly.
