CSTW is a retro 16-bit comedy RPG set in the various Lovecraft mythos. Cthulhu, the Great Old One, arises from R'lyeh to destroy the world, but he is thwarted by a wizard who seals his powers away and curses him so that the only way Cthulhu can get his powers back (in order to destroy the world) is by becoming a hero (viz by saving the world). Thus, Cthulhu sets off on an adventure to save the world and become a hero, all the while playing with all the tropes of fantasy RPGs.

CSTW, for all that it is pretty much a classic RPG, has the sensibilities of modern RPG design. You get all your HP back after a battle (though MP is somewhat limited), random encounters have a set limit before they stop happening and you're free to explore without interruption, and you can save anywhere. Plus, it doesn't overstay its welcome: I finished in 12 hours, you could probably beat it in 8.

For all that, CSTW would be a solid recommendation. Buy it, play it.

But that's not all.

After you beat the game, you can play in the challenge modes, such as Cthulhu's Angels.

Cthulhu's Angels is CSTW, but Cthulhu takes the lazy way out and does his heroism by proxy, sending October to recruit a team of sexy ladies to save the world for him. While it's largely the same game, the change of team and the various subversions make it a fun second playthrough.
